Ukraine-Russia War Take 2
Here is what the preliminary take on the Ukraine thread disappearing is:
The site was hit with a massive spam attack where hundreds of spam threads were created. In the case where, for example, I see a single spam thread and delete it, that is called a soft delete, and mods can still see them but forum members cannot. Those deletion can be undone.
When a massive attack hits with hundreds of threads, an admin uses a different procedure where the hundreds of spam threads are merged and then hard deleted, where the threads are gone, and no note is left behind. As I have mentioned with my own experience of just soft deleting a large number of posts, sometimes a post or thread gets checked or merged accidentally and is deleted by mistake. Dealing with hundreds of spam threads takes a sledgehammer, not a scalpel.
It appears that our Ukraine thread may have gotten caught up in that recent net of spam threads. If so, it is likely gone for good. I cant say this for sure, and am awaiting comments from admins on this issue. Yes, this sucks. And hopefully there was some other software glitch that caused the disappearance, and we may recover it in the future.
But in the meantime, I have created this new Ukraine-Russia War thread to enable the conversation to continue. Obviously continuity with earlier discussions will be lost. There is no way around that. So as best as possible, let's pick up the conversation with recent events and go from there.
If you have any questions about this, please post them in the mod thread, not here. Let's keep this thread going with posts about the war, not the disappearance of the old thread.
Thanks.
I'm not sure if it's fake news, but both sides are definitely denying it so seems likely.
Transfers of soldiers in the army must be unlocked.
The government has just adopted a special resolution that introduces a real and transparent transfer mechanism for our soldiers between military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This applies to transfers at the initiative of soldiers.
The mechanism was developed in cooperation between civil society, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
We agreed on this at a meeting with civil society in October. We fulfill the promise.
Transfers will work through the "Army+" application. 72 hours to review the report. The result of the inspection is communicated to the soldier through "Army+". In case of refusal, clear reasons must be given. In case of agreement, it is a clear decision.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine must monitor the effectiveness of the approved mechanism. Technical readiness for the start - November 15.
This is an important example of absolutely constructive cooperation between the military leadership and the team of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine on the one hand and representatives of public organizations on the other.
Thanks to everyone who worked for this solution.
Good read on the plan being floated around:
Trump nominee for the department of defense calls Putin a war criminal
Trump nominee for the department of defense calls Putin a war criminal
sometimes I get tired of being right all the time
Aid passed 79 - 18 in Senate and 311 to 112 in House. Pro Ukraine legislators taking high offices is not a surprise.
Whether or not these people fight for what they believe to be right or agree to do whatever Trump says remains to be seen.
Anne Applebaum: “Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian targets have increased in frequency in the week since the U.S. election, killing civilians and destroying another dam. Russian troops continued to make incremental gains toward the city of Pokrovsk. The Russian army is preparing a new offensive, this time using North Korean troops. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Donald Trump on his election but implied that he would have discussions only if the U.S. initiates talks, drops its sanctions, and refuses to offer any further support for Ukraine—accepting, in other words, a Russian victory. Meanwhile, Russian state television welcomed news of the election by gleefully showing nude photographs of Melania Trump on the country’s most-watched channel.
“How will the new U.S. administration respond? What should the outgoing administration do?
“In one sense, nothing will change. For nearly three years, many, many people, from the right to the left, in Europe and in America, have called for negotiations to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Biden administration repeatedly probed the possibility of negotiations. The German government endlessly proposed negotiations. Now a new team will arrive in Washington, and it will be demanding negotiations too.
“The new team will immediately run into the same dilemma that everyone else has encountered: ‘Land for peace’ sounds nice, but the president of Russia isn’t fighting for land. Putin is fighting not to conquer Pokrovsk but to destroy Ukraine as a nation. He wants to show his own people that Ukraine’s democratic aspirations are hopeless. He wants to prove that a whole host of international laws and norms, including the United Nations Charter and the Geneva conventions, no longer matter. His goal is not to have peace but to build concentration camps, torture civilians, kidnap 20,000 Ukrainian children, and get away with it—which, so far, he has.
“Putin also wants to show that America, NATO, and the West are weak and indecisive, regardless of who is president, and that his brutal regime represents some kind of new global standard. And now, of course, he also needs to show his country that nearly three years of fighting had some purpose, given that this costly, bloody, extended war, officially described as nothing more than a ‘special military operation,’ was supposed to end in a matter of days. Maybe Putin could be interested in stopping the fight for some period of time. Maybe he could be threatened into halting his advance, or bribed with an offer of sanctions relief. But any cease-fire treaty that does not put some obstacle—security guarantees, NATO troops in Ukraine, major rearmament—in the way of another invasion will fail sooner or later because it will simply give Russia an opportunity to rest, rearm, and resume pursuit of the same goals later on
“Putin will truly stop fighting only if he loses the war, loses power, or loses control of his economy. And there is plenty of evidence that he fears all three, despite his troops’ slow movement forward.
“… When the next U.S. president, secretary of defense, and secretary of state take office, they will discover that they face the same choices that the current administration did. They can increase Putin’s agony using economic, political, and military tools and make sure he stops fighting. Or they can let him win, quickly or slowly. But a Russian victory will not make Europe safer or the U.S. stronger. Instead, the costs will grow higher: A massive refugee crisis, an arms race, and possibly a new round of nuclear proliferation could follow as European and Asian democracies assess the new level of danger from the autocratic world. An invasion of Taiwan becomes more likely. An invasion of a NATO state becomes thinkable.”
It's not news, he is referring to the vote months ago , in April.
He is saying that given a lot of republicans at the end agreed with Ukraine aid, it's normal that Trump is nominating pro Ukraine people.
But that wasn't what everyone , both democrats and republicans, has been saying in the past few months.
its what I predicted for 2 years
It's like people haven't realized that we had 4 years of Trump showing that he's just a neocon.
Russia is massively increasing drone strikes on Ukraine. More than 2,000 were launched in October, according to Ukraine’s general staff - a record number in this war.
The same report, external says Russia fired 1,410 drones in September, and 818 in August - compared with around 1,100 for the entire three-month period before that.
It’s part of a wider resurgence for Russian forces. The invaders are advancing all along the front lines. North Korean troops have joined the war on Moscow’s side. And with the election of Donald Trump for a second term as US president, Ukraine’s depleted and war-weary forces are facing uncertain support from their biggest military donor.
The majority of the Russian drones raining down on Ukraine are Iranian-designed Shaheds: propeller-driven, with a distinctive wing shape and a deadly warhead packed into the nose cone.
Russia has also started to launch fake drones, without any explosives, to confuse Ukraine’s air defence units and force them to waste ammunition.
Compared to missiles they are much cheaper to build, easier to fire, and designed to sap morale.
2000 drones in an attack will soon seem like nothing
2000 drones in an attack will soon seem like nothing
I think the missile strikes which will begin once it gets cold are going to be far more devastating than the shaheds have been the past few months.
Kursk is looking like 2022 again. Putin wants it back before Trump takes office, is afraid he won't be able to conduct a campaign during the winter, and is not using the slower tactics which have been more effective. The losses are insane.
just a quick reminder that the West will always side with Nazis.

one would think that the Canadian federal government refusing to release the names of the known Nazi war criminals that they allowed to immigrate to Canada would be considered a "slap in the face" to the "incredibly amount of Canadians (that) died to fight Nazism" (sic).
but I guess you reserve your ire for the messenger.
"fearing that it could fuel Russian propaganda"
Looks like they didn't even need to release the data in order for that to happen. What point are you trying to make here... in the Ukraine thread?
I didnt think it could be any clearer. but here, hope this helps.
