My Jimmy Carter Story
When Carter was president, I was working for the US Census Bureau in Suitland Md. During his presidency, there was an oil embargo and Carter, through executive order, reduced the temperature in all government offices to the mid-fifties. So, we sat there freezing for a couple of days getting no work done. Then someone figured out how to break into the office heaters and by the end of the week the temperature was back to normal and we could work again.
So Carter, at least at the Census Bureau, disrupted work for a couple of days, and probably made a number of people sick.

You can make this sort of argument against virtually any leader of a major Western country. If you became president, we surely would be able to make this argument about you after the fact. U.S. presidents obviously have not been well-intentioned all the time. but even if you are well-intentioned as president, you are likely to faced with foreign policy situations in which both options in a strategically important country are repressive. Iran in the 1970s is a perfect example. The Shah obviou
Your narrative is that good people can become leaders and then be forced to make tough decisions.
Unfortunately that's not how it works.

This has nothing to do with a narrative and nothing to do with whether leaders are more often good or bad people. My point was that, regardless of whether you are a good person or a bad person, if you are the leader of a large Western country, you will be forced to make decisions in situations where there are no good options.
I'm finding it hard to believe that you disagree with that general statement about the world.

Ok. It sounded like you were doing some Carter apologia. My point is that a good person would never be allowed to become the titular leader of the Western Empire as serving the interests of empire means being forced to do things like aid and abet in genocide.

We can debate whether this is true, but the fact that every U.S. administration ends up on the side of at least one bad regime doesn't prove your point.
Tough decisions in general for contextual and geopolitical reasons aside, East Timor really was pretty effed up, in fairness. Carter shouldn't have given military aid imo.
Worst. Mason. Thread. Ever.
Yes, the usual Victor stance. 'One man can't do anything, so I'll just sit on my perch and criticize everyone. Vote? Nah, they all suck. Try to change things? Can't do it by myself, so I'll do nothing.'
You know what one of the biggest problems with the western world is, Victor? People with attitudes like yours. Spending all your time criticizing and complaining, no time doing. Unless you're a lot different IRL and this is just a weird character you're playing.
I send thousands of dollars to Hamas and Hezbollah every month.
A beloved man who dedicated his entire life to helping others just died and Mason thinks now is the time to tell a petty story about being cold for a few days.
When Mason was running the 2+2 forums, I was posting daily from my main account. During his administration, there was a sudden wave of temp-bans and Mason, by executive order, locked out several users, including me. So, we sat there banned for a couple of days getting no posting done. Then someone figured out how to sneak back in via a burner account, and by the end of the week we were all posting again like before.
So Mason, at least for those of us on 2+2, disrupted the forum for a couple of days, and probably annoyed a fair number of people.
If you read the bio in all my books you'll see that it says that. I worked for Census for over six years
The arrogance and aloofness required of a life as boring of yours and the pretentiousness of ‘you’d know if you read the bio in all my books’
You’re not Stephen King, my guy. You’re poker’s equivalent of a guy who started a dragon ball z podcast out of his basement during covid listened to only by his mom and someone with a ham radio
I don't know why wrapping 2p2s "YOUTUBE" brackets around a Youtube URL won't make the video play. Anyway, this is an actual little funny story (3 mins long) about Jimmy Carter.

you just need to wrap the bolded characters around

This isn't true. If there was a sudden wave of temporary bans, I had nothing to do with it.
Again, this actually goes back to my Census Bureau days. For the 1980 Census, I was sent out west and was doing quality control work at our processing center in California. One of the things that is emphasized in quality control is that production and quality control needs to be as independent as possible. Since I was the "top dog" here, which meant production, all the quality control, which would include things like bans, was handed over to other people as much as possible. So, if you were temp banned, it's very unlikely I had anything to do with it.

This post is either amazing or incredibly dumb. I can't tell which.
My Jimmy Carter Story:
When I was in high school I got ripped at an Allman Brothers concert and made out with a dude in the back of a lime-green 63-65 Camero. I would later learn that this guy was Benjamin Civiletti, Carter's attorney general and the first Italian-American head of the DoJ. Fun fact: this car appears in the background of a few shots of the John Waters movie Female Trouble.
It was a 63 Studebaker. They only made 65 cameros in Baloo blue
gonna set my thermostat to 55 on thursday in memoriam

Sometimes you see these threads and know they are gonna be stupid and an enormous waste of time, but once in a while if you’re taking a long dump or something you should click on them and scan through so you don’t miss gold like this.
My Jimmy Carter Story.... is not really a JC story.
I lived in south GA for a while and one of the secret service guys on JC's detail lived across the street and we became fairly good friends.... tho not good enough to survive after we moved out of state. Anyway....
One afternoon I was talking with a neighbor on the front yard and we hear BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM coming from the woods behind the SS guys house. We go running to see if everything was OK. We find SSman holding his pistol, aiming at the ground near the backdoor entrance to his house. (echoes deceive as we thought sound was at the treeline) Getting closer we see a small rattler that had been dispatched.
Not missing a beat my neighbor said "Bill, would you share the phone number of your immediate superior"?
"Why"
"I wanna call him and tell him it took you 4 shots at close range to kill a snake"
Good times.
