British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.

Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.

Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

That's an extremely strange bit of police procedure, at least as it's presented here. Why it would need more than one officer to have a word and establish that there was no case I can't imagine. A custodial interview obviously wasn't indicated, and peremptory arrest without a warrant in such a case could well be illegal (assuming they didn't have one, and, if they did, that would be even more completely mad).

looks like the school managed to convince the police those parents were completely unhinged and dangerous, and the police believed school staff and governors on their word, then it came up it was utterly exaggerated.

seems like a case where the people who made the wildly indefensible accusations should be liable criminally and civilly more than the police liable of misconduct.

if several credible people mount a case of extreme harassment and dangerousness and presumptive imminent violent threat what is the police supposed to do?

If it was exclusively people fleeing to save their lives from wars (the only people who legitimately have a right to asylum), there would be no gender skew at all (if anything there would be a little pro-women skew as a war torn nation will have fewer young adult men alive than women, as they disproportionately die in wars).

Also to note, so many people claim to be 16 or 17 when they are 18+, for obvious reasons (so stop calling them "children" thanks)

Or maybe these people are exactly like you and are fleeing war instead of fighting?

If my country is invaded i flee, i am not a samurai jfc, doing the best interest of me and my family is the moral imperative above all.

If i can't flee then ofc i submit to the invader until i can leave.

It's only when the alternative is certain death that you fight from a weaker position with the odds against you.

I would flee with my family, ca va sans dire.

And when they actually flee from war (see syrians 2014-15) they are equally skewed. Or mostly women (see Ukraine). Cannot be fleeing wars and be male-skewed.

They're supposed to check it out and not go in mob-handed arresting people and holding them for eight hours on zero evidence. And it gets loonier. The police threatened a Hertfordshire county councillor that she had to stop communicating with the school (to look into the parents' case) or she'd be a 'suspect' and potentially get raided as well. And she's elected and they aren't.

A county councillor has been warned that she faced becoming a suspect if she helped parents who complained about their daughter’s school.

Michelle Vince, of Hertfordshire county council, has taken the step of installing a home security doorbell system, as she fears her property will be raided after sending emails on behalf of Maxie Allen, 50, and Rosalind Levine, 46, who raised concerns over the recruitment process for a new headteacher at Cowley Hill Primary School.

She told The Sunday Times the case raises serious questions about police “taking away democratic rights” from elected representatives.

In an email sent to her from a Hertfordshire police officer on December 20 2024, ahead of the arrests, they said: “I ask that your communication (with the school) ceases from this point onwards as you may find yourself liable to being recorded as a suspect in a harassment investigation.”

The Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner says police should never have got involved in the disagreement at all.

Jonathan Ash-Edwards, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hertfordshire, ordered a review after Mr Allen and Ms Levine were reportedly detained in front of their young daughter by six officers before being left in a cell for eight hours.

Mr Ash-Edwards said Hertfordshire Constabulary should never have involved itself in the first place after the parents criticised Cowley Hill Primary School in Borehamwood on a WhatsApp group.

“There has clearly been a fundamental breakdown in relationships between a school and parents that shouldn’t have become a police matter,” he said.

“I will look at what more can be done with mediation services in Hertfordshire to help amicably resolve disputes without police involvement.

“While people should be courteous and go through the proper channels when raising concerns about a public service, the public should be able to express their views without worrying they’ll get a knock at the door from the police.”

He has ordered the county's new Chief Constable to carry out an inquiry, which will report on Tuesday.
