British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

I don't want any involvement in this war whatsoever.

I'm surprised and fairly impressed with how starmer has handled this so far

He's pretty great at the international stuff. It's just domestically he's a car crash.

Yep, I don't think he could have done better.

Consider Farage in the same situation. He'd have dropped his trousers and grabbed his ankles with no delay.

If you’ve given permission for the US to use UK bases for its attacks you’re involved in the war and there’s no way around that.

The correct policy when it comes to US missions abroad is usually two fingers.

The UK has approved the use of its bases for the US to launch strikes on Iranian sites targeting the Strait of Hormuz.

Downing Street had previously allowed American forces to use British bases for operations to prevent Iran firing missiles that put British interests or lives at risk.

I don't doubt how impossibly difficult this is for the UK and I'm reluctant to even blame starmer for the weak position we are in. But I strongly dislike it.

Trump's now saying the US will pull away from attacking Iran and it's up to other countries to keep Hormuz open.

Basically he's rampaged across that part of the world like a toddler having a huge tantrum, achieved nothing, and now others have to clean the mess up if possible.

Though this being Trump he could reverse this idea tomorrow.

Please, let us not be involved in that region in any way.

We are involved. The use of bases is involvement and it's just grown. if we* want to keep our base ( and at some point british antarctic, Falklands etc) then when it comes to it we will inevitably have to jump when the master demands. And we have chosen a master that is periodically batshit crazy.

Sorry but the alternative was you know what. Be part of something big or be bullied

* we could just give them up

Domestically there are some positive noises

The report, which has the draft title of the Beveridge Report for the Economy, will say the British economy rewards grifters and exploitation rather than hard work, and that voter anger is fuelled by the belief that hard work and “doing the right thing” leaves many feeling cheated.

Several potential Labour leadership candidates are understood to have requested to see the report, which was prepared as part of a partnership between the Labour Growth Group of MPs once considered loyal to Keir Starmer and the Good Growth Foundation thinktank.

Many MPs said they had been frustrated with the communications strategy to brand both Reform UK and the Greens as extremists or simply impractical.

“The problem with the answers coming from the populists isn’t that they’re ‘not sensible’, it’s that they’re not radical enough,” one Labour source said. “Price controls and handouts actually accept the premise that things can’t be fundamentally changed. The truly radical thing is taking on why the system is broken in the first place. Why can’t we build homes? Why is energy so expensive? Why do many workers pay a higher marginal tax rate than a landlord?

“Voters aren’t turning to Reform and the Greens because they’re becoming ‘extreme’. They’re, fairly, concluding that the mainstream offer is managed decline and they’d rather roll the dice. The answer is to put forward something genuinely bolder that really changes things for them.

Maybe eventually they will even come up with the glaringly obvious answer

More than 20 countries – including the UK, Germany, France, Japan and South Korea – have said they would contribute to efforts ensuring safe passage in the strait of Hormuz, condemning Iran’s closure of the vital waterway.

You all refuse to get involved until it’s too late. Maybe the possibility of a missile reaching your country will wake you up. The US bailed you out in WW2, I doubt they will ever come to your defense again. Look at what passivity has done to your country.

You think Hormuz being closed is a good thing? It makes sense that the nations affected the most should take more responsibility. The US and Israel once again have done the heavy lifting for the world to protect it against radical Islam. Now it’s time to do your part.

Seems like a bad thing that among any other things should have been properly considered.

Even the Secretary of the UN agrees with the war. I think the US should completely abandon Europe especially the UK. All of these countries are cowards and will pay dearly for their passivity.

Now that we know that Iran can reach all of Europe with missiles has your opinion of this war changed?

I don't think anyone who knows you're mongidig wants to talk to you. Your new identity is a busted flush.

why would it change?

by chezlaw

why would it change?

You don’t have a missile defense system. You would have to rely on the US and Israel to protect you. I don’t know why they would given how your country has acted(not acted). It would behoove your country to do your part in this war.

Honestly these days it's more likely the missiles would come from the US...
