The real amusing thing is that there is pretty big overlap of people who are fake outraged at Elon for the "Nazi salute" who are completely indifferent, if not supportive, of persons who literally do the Nazi salute because they are fellow travelers in antisemitic circles.

I would say intent obviously matters.

When Houthis do the Sig Heil, it is intentionally showing their ideological support of aspects of Naziism, specifically genociding Jews. And when members of this forum who love to call out others as Nazis (like Trolly and Victor) are completely indifferent to this, this shows they are bad faith actors.

So what matters is whether Elon made that hand gesture to show an ideological support towards Naziism. And I would say emphatically no, and you are insinuating associations (without fully saying this is what you believe, because it probably isn't) to unfairly defame Elon.

Unfortunately for Elon, it wasn't a Nazi salute, and if by chance it was, he didn't get away with it. Although I'm unclear what the deciding criteria is in getting away with it vs not.

I would say the most reasonable explanation is he got excited and gesticulated with his hand in the moment without any thought whether it was similar to a Sig Heil or not, and it wasn't indicative of any ideological conviction.

And the argument he was intentionally "signaling his power level" is bad faith and absurd. Even if he is a secret Nazi sympathizer (there is absolutely no evidence this is the case) why would he intentionally signal this on this stage at this moment. It makes zero sense and is absurd.

And I would further state if we want to be criticizing people for doing Sig Heils, maybe we should start by criticizing the people who intentionally do it for ideological reasons.

If we are indifferent when people are intentionally doing Sig Heils to show their support for Nazism, and only are selectively outraged in extremely dubious cases when it is convenient to our own politics; then that isn't very principled of us, now is it.
