The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic fa
The people that are claiming that excessive alcohol is no worse than excessive coffee, or that people can drink ungodly amounts of alcohol on a regular basis with no negative effects, are seriously deluding themselves. I understand why some of you WANT to believe that there are no consequences for your bad habits, but we are talking about something that is basically just established fact.

Are you sure that 8 beers a day is worse for you than 8 cups of coffee a day (physical effects on health only)? I have no idea, but I don't see that as an obvious fact.

Depends what you're calling negative effects. Sure you're more likely to attend casualty with scrapes etc I guess especially early on in your drinking career but otherwise? The walking between pubs is valuable exercise that the Netflix crowd don't get. I once walked with a friend to his flat in SE London after a night out in the West End and it took ~6 hours (it was about 15 miles), and have done numerous pub crawls across town.
I don't have the time, atm but for now and possible forever I will just say that I disagree.
For starters, alcohol causes you brain to produce lower levels of dopamine as a result to balance out the artificial dopamine boost you get from drinking. Simply put, the more you drink the less dopamine when sober, leading you to want to drink all the time and feeling like more **** when you don't. Which just leads to an ever shrinking euphoric window for your hedonist lifestyle.
If that's true it still sounds preferable to maximising your life expectancy with a tedious regime of salads and gym workouts. Some people would much rather live a full and varied life that ends in their 60s than a life of monotony that stretches out to their 80s.

Yeah the idea is you can't have any alcohol at all and you can only eat salads. Better yet, blend them and drink them.
Come on.
If the suggestion is that people shouldn't get pissed because it's bad for their health I reject that alternative and so has/does every interesting person I've ever known.

If someone's alcohol consumption is almost all beer there's very little physical damage they'll do to their bodies unless they're on the super strength for decades. The examples talked about here were heavy wine drinking which is another thing altogether - France had terrible cirrhosis and alcoholism problems for a long time.Re. pleasure - some people just find life too mundane
this is not true. 2-3 drinks a day will keep alcohol in your system which ****s your body up in multiple ways. mostly it ****s up your blood cell production as youre soaking your bones in alcohol 24/7. its also very bad for your brain.

8 a day? Long term? Uh, yeah? The caloric load alone will mess you up, to say nothing of what that does to your mood and your vital organs.
Some denial going on ITT, it's the classic case of the guy who thinks he's okay because he only drinks in the evening or only drinks beer instead of hard alcohol.
guessing way more people drink 8 beers per day than 8 coffees
I'd have thought that in a discussion around interesting lifestyle choices the guy who's spent every available moment of the last ~20 years trolling anonymously online and failing to connect with anyone might want to stand back.

Alcohol is a thief. I drank 3 drinks a day for years cause I didnβt like the girls I was dating at the time. Itβs terrible for you. Now I drink like 6 drinks a month. Much better.

Do your thing, obv. I did that lifestyle and i dont share your experiences on it being a full and varied life but w/e.

Brother get pissed. If you do it every day, there might be a problem yet as long as you don't beat your missus, you're not an alcoholic.
I believe he's redefining alcoholism because by the traditional definition he was one, perhaps still is?

fyi I'm defending the lifestyle I used to lead. I stopped enjoying it so much five to ten years ago and since then have only had a few beers every month. I've enjoyed the change.

Reducing physical activity to a tedium will usually result in a sedentary lifestyle, so your point here is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
It's not like it has to be tedious however, and I'm hard pressed to see how being active is somehow in conflict with living a "full and varied life".
Keeping reasonably fit gives you more options in life, not less.
Other than that, where is the actual conflict? Person A's lifestyle choices might not be for Person B, and that's fine. It doesn't mean either of them made the wrong choice. That is something only they can answer.

We all get old brother. I don't enjoy it much anymore either. I got drunk at a wedding in June and was hungover for 2 days. No thanks.
I must admit I basically agree with jalfrezi on the topic even if he tried to distance himself from what I wrote he ended up writing the same

Lol man really, where is the conflict when a lot of people want to tax lifestyles they disagree with in obscene ways?
Really?
Make all and any vice taxes fully unconstitutional and there is no conflict

Lifestyles based around maximising health aren't for everyone - let people drink and have fun without being told they're unhealthy.

I'd agree that one shouldn't go around telling people that their lifestyle is wrong, but I see no problem with pointing out that a specific lifestyle choice is unhealthy. Wrong and unhealthy are two different things.
That said, there is no need to be a preacher and lord that over people. They usually know.
