I dont know much about the Epoch Times, other than it is some sort of dissident right wing Chinese version of the NY Post; but I play poker in casinos in Los Angeles with a lot of Chinese people, and I am surprised how often I see someone reading a printed or electronic copy of the Epoch Times.

I dont know how sophisticated Chinese dissidents are about American politics and Trump. But the fact Trump has shown he can be bought, and now the fact he has legitimate money problems because the of the lawfare being waged against him by the Dem Party. I think it should be expected that IF Trump becomes President again Xi will just buy him off, and he will be a pro CCP President.

Unclear if Xi can offer more than people in finance or oil or other sectors he could help with targeted deregulation / favourable rules both domestically and for trade and so on.

basically, that's what happened, the boxers had literally convinced themselves that through using taiqi, they could become bullet proof - when people were killed by bullets, they didn't reconsider their proposition, they instead used confirmation bias to figure, well I guess Li wasn't very good at taiqi after all, hence why he died

instead of seeing "crazy cult members vie for power in china" we saw this as the "democratic and religious revolution" we'd been waiting for since we began interacting with china with ping pong diplomacy under nixon, we were so goal driven that our own confirmation bias stepped in

china responded quickly and harshly, most today concede that was a mistake to do so, by making it a big deal, they elevated them, they should have just routinely ignored them instead

as a result tens of thousands of members went abroad and applied for political asylum in the USA and other countries and we granted it - the leader himself even moved to NYC long before they began the political quest

so if you meet a Chinese person who came to the USA in the late 90s or early aughts, chances are overwhelming high that he's a cult member, the other option is he probably just prefers to read a newspaper in his own language and a locally printed Chinese version of the epoch times is more accessible
