It's kind of like asking who runs a barrel of snakes. Corruption has a tendency to decentralize power and Ukraine has long been viewed as a corrupt country, often referred to even prior to this expanded conflict with Russia as the most corrupt country in the world.
I doubt anyone can get a definitive handle on the question of who is running things. What set off this escalation from 2014 was a tag team effort by the extremist/nationalist/neo nazis and the U.S. - that much we know. Whether or not Zelensky ever intended to pursue the promise of peace and rapprochement he ran on? or whether or not the visit with Boris Johnson cajoled him into siding with the West or just shored up a higher level of support? Nobody outside knows those dynamics for sure. We do know that the neo nazi element is in control of the most important militias and that they have killed people and that they issue credible death threats to all kinds of people. Of all the sources of policy influence, between the extremist neo nazi rebels who put in this regime, Zelensky and the government on paper, the U.S., the U.S. and the West, the Ukrainian people, the pro Russian element and ethnic Russians in Ukraine...It definitely seems like the most influential are the neo nazi nationalists and the U.S. And that fits a pattern of how the U.S. exercises control over weaker states, by empowering the extreme right thugs and suppressing democracy.
Zelensky being a Jew is the perfect cover for neo nazis, just like how Clarence Thomas functions for the extreme right in the U.S.

We spend a lot of time arguing about what Ukraine should do to end the war. But it seems we dont really pay enough attention to what Putin/Russia actually wants, and under what terms they would be willing to end the war. Honestly, it doesn't really seem like Putin has an off ramp that wouldn't be a giant self own in the medium to long term.
Pretty much no matter how much territory Ukraine gives up as part of a real peace, the future of whatever is left of Western Ukraine is going to be extremely western aligned. And by default will much more prosperous and successful than whatever Russia takes over.
And it is hard to imagine Putin would be willing to end the war knowing this is the inevitable outcome. So not sure there is any outcome that would work for Putin than just keeping the war going indefinitely until Ukraine is completely destroyed.
I know they are getting some N Korean and Chinese troops to fill the gaps, but there is also the question of whether Russia will run out of manpower before this happens.
Looking at how things have progressed through Putin's eyes, and trying to imagine an outcome that would be acceptable to him, it is really hard to imagine him accepting any reasonable peace deal. So all this debate about what Ukraine is or isn't doing to reach a peace deal kind of seems bad faith mental masturbation.

I did a lot of explaining on this in the previous thread on this topic which mysteriously vanished (hence the "Take 2" label on this thread." It would be a lot of work to outline how the neo Nazis function in Ukraine. They have a long history and they've been deeply involved with the coup and the policy course since. I wouldn't feel all that work would be justified given your tone and the absolute delusional levels of indoctrination of every poster here who supports the proxy war.
But we could do a good faith back and forth. Why don't you, using the internet, provide a summary of a man named Stepan Bandera and his extended following over time who are called Banderites. If you want to understand this subtopic you've got to appreciate the history. I, in turn, can add some details which you will inevitably leave out and, in a back and forth exchange, we can flesh out the topic of neo Nazis presence and influence in Ukraine. If we are successful maybe can answer the question of how and why the West has recently undertaken efforts to whitewash these elements in Ukraine, even trace the history of the positions of the U.S. over time regarding this very persistent and significant element of the Ukrainian body politic.
Even better, maybe we can answer the question of how it came to be that, in September 2023, the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau had to apologize on behalf of his country because the Canadian Parliament received and applauded a Nazi war criminal.
How could this happen when Canada fought against the Nazis in WW2? How could they dishonor their fallen soldiers and the memory of all those who died at the hands of the Nazi regime?
