I have a gay cousin.

His sister has an ultra-Orthodox Jewish son who dwells in a very hardcore religious community which considers homosexuality a biblical abomination.

The son gave his mother an ultimatum. She could choose between a relationship with her brother or her son.

I lived in San Francisco back in the 80's and 90's. A much more inclusive place than Kansas.

Yes!!
My family is not the type of family that would discriminate against lgbtq people but like so many what you find out is basically most lgbtq people arent disowned by there family for “being gay” they are disowned for some random reason related to being gay. Thats why the core of gay male culture is the way it is.

But the particulars are a lot different. For instance, if Trident were structurally as rigid as the Moon, it would still be in a highly elliptical orbit, right?

Yes by "dynamics" I just meant Newton's Laws But yes, specifics about Triton impact how kinetic energy can be lost over time and the fact that Titan is less rigid means energy is transferred to heat and friction faster.

I hope you know that you and your gay colleagues are not alone in the experience of being disowned.

One of the aspects of my world perspective is seeing things through a lens of tribalism.

There are certain tribes to which we are assigned at birth. For example, I was born simultaneously into straight, male, Caucasian and Jewish tribes. They weren't tribes of my choosing.

I suspect that you would agree that gay is a tribe you were born into.

I hope for a day when we can transcend tribal differences. Anyone who shares the goal of being considerate of the experience of future generations is welcome in my world.

That's interesting. My niece had a similar experience to yours coming out in high school. It got so bad with my sister that my mom and I had to intervene, and my niece ended up living with my mom her senior year. Not that it stopped anything. If anything, it probably made things worse, along with all the “whose side are you on?” divisiveness. The thing is, my mom’s Catholic, so it’s not like these are alternate universes. After thinking and praying on it, she chose her granddaughter over what others said the Bible said. And she’s a good Christian, not in the preachy sense, but in the “don’t judge, forgive, love one another” sense. It radiates. I thought her verdict would be the end of it. Nope. It was brutal. I say was because unfortunately my sister passed before she could see what she lost. Brutal.

What I found interesting with what you said is that my sister hadn’t been very religious beforehand; mostly stuck with the Catholic stuff. But that clashed with my mom’s views, and she started getting into hardline evangelicalism, almost as if it gave her more ammo against my niece. And that only intensified when she was diagnosed with cancer. Along with a family accomplice, she decided to “pray it away,” despite everyone urging her to follow the medical route. Eventually, her symptoms got so bad that she had no choice but to go in for surgery, followed by some chemo. Both went great and knocked the cancer down significantly. But then she decided she was God’s miracle and refused further treatment. She was a pre-med grad.

My mom knew her best and she thought it was a mix of self-righteousness and a need for certainty or surety that she noticed in her from when she was little, along with the control issue. That sounds a bit like what you're talking about, where the religion serves more of a justifier than a driver. Can't help think it works the other way as well but based on what you said, maybe not so much. She wasn't into politics at all prior to Trump, either. She saw something more than the politics.

Anyway, my niece is doing well.... after a patch. She dropped out of college and spent a few years in what I'll call her Coyote Ugly phase running a bar. But she decided that wasn't what she wanted for her life, went back to school, got her EENG and now she's getting pretty near the C-Suites with a tech giant. And get this: she hasn't worked a day as an EE. They were starting a new division and needed someone to coordinate between the techs and supply and that was it to the fast track. She attributes a lot of that to what she learned running a party bar in a college town both in terms of dealing with people but also seeing how a business runs and being solely responsible for keeping it running.

But as I said it took her a bit of time to get grounded, even though half of her former family was still around and supportive. I don't think anything can fill that hole. And not to make light of your experience but some of the stories I've heard from my niece of families closing ranks against the kid are crazy. It's just child abuse. But getting out is the main thing. Some can't do it; others don't even know they're in it. You know what's going on and you made it out; things get better from there.

by John21

It's just child abuse. But getting out is the main thing. .

Destroying the environment is also child abuse. And there's no getting out. There's no Planet B.

And you have people like Lucifer who are the embodiment of the unbridled and destructive id of the abuser. All they live for is consumption and personal hierarchical ranking.

Like children who need a parent to set boundaries like the time to go sleep and a healthy diet, the world needs a parent to take responsibility for a shared environment that is completely neglected.

I don't mean to lightly pivot away from the abuse which is specific to the lgbtq community. But we need to have some energy for the abuse which is not only specific to ourselves .... we need to focus on universal abuse issues. Environmental abuse will harm more lgbtq people than issues which are specific to lgbtq community.

by Nut Nut

Well then ..... we can agree to agree.

Sure. But that point was never being contested. That orbits with non 0 eccentricity are expected even with only 2 bodies as shown on the video was. And I’m not sure we agree on that.

This is a good post. This story is standard, and no i don’t think it works the other way, and not sure what you mean by that. From my perspective there is a heirarchy that puts straight men on top, then straight women below that, thendown in the world of lgbtq lesbians are and have historically been treated better than gays. They are powerful allies because of this. I think they fit better into the heirarchy because they have a sexual orientation like straight males.

Historically maybe, but now the average straight women is treated way better by society than the average straight male.

No.
Not even close to true.

Haha it's actually incredible that someone can be so out of touch. I'm referring to USA

Women receive about 2/3 of tax dollars while contributing close to half. There is significant forced wealth distribution from men to women.

It's common for men to receive genital mutilation as babies. (Women thankfully are no longer subjected to this, at least in the West).

I could keep writing for probably an hour but that's a start

do go on

Women have value for just existing (because they make babies) while men have to find a way to provide value to society.

Besides the endless statistics I can provide that show women are treated better than men there's just the common sense evaluation that society treats and respects women infinitely more than men (for people in the average range).

You can make an argument that top 5% men are treated better than top 5% women but it's still probably women. When comparing average men vs average women though I'd love to hear a good argument for men being treated better.

by WPNdonk

Wow, i never thought of it that way, that sounds really inconvenient for men, **** those bitches.

by spaceman Bryce

No.
Not even close to true.

pensions alone are massively biased in favor of women (like exceptionally so), at least defined contribution pensions are (like social security or public pensions).

they aren't parametered to the wide gap in life expectancy so for the same contributions (or same years worked at the same salary) women get pensions for much much longer.

living more also means that medicare or equivalent programs in other countries are a massive gift to women.

then there is the draft, women had no equivalent of the horror of WW2, the Korean and Vietnam war draft. especially in the USA where those wars weren't domestic (you weren't getting bombed), it's objective that wars penalized women far far far far less than men.

it's quite absurd how tilted explicitly in women favor and against men those things are

I love women, but I also understand reality.

It's not their fault they have it easier. (For the most part) Men have enacted most of the policies that have put women in a superior position to men. Because the top men don't care about the average man.

I actually think this tribal gender conversation is interesting.

I agree with WPN Donk that women have inherent value as baby makers.

During the Neolithic / Agricultural Revolution which saw us transition from hunter gathers to large agricultural settlements and cities, over 90% of male DNA disappeared as they were killed off in tribal wars or made to be slaves.

Women's DNA survived intact because they were instrumental to population growth.

The fact is that just like in a pride of lions, the women stick together and the men are either isolated leaders or castoffs.

Discrimination runs in both directions.

Men don't have to deal with menstruation, menopause, PMS, pregnancy, childbirth and tits. Taking a piss outside is also much easier.

But those aren't things society imposed on them. while pensions using the wrong life expectancy and the draft are.

This thread took a real weird turn fast.

But please carry on. This is fascinating.

do you think it's proper to get the same social security payment as a man or woman with the same contributions from the same age, given almost 7 years of gap in life expectancy?

meanwhile, in the real world, in battleground states of the USA (ie the only places that matter basically for the political destiny of the west), this is what people think

Exactly!

We see the same thing with people critical of slavery. Slaves didn’t have to worry about finding jobs, where their next meal was coming from, protecting their community from external threats, rising housing prices, etc. So they had it pretty easy by most standards as long as they did what they were told. Funny how removing that last caveat with women leads to large drops in fertility rates and not wanting to be stuck choosing among the least worst options and forced to sit on some guy's lap in a culturally forced mating game of musical chairs.

This is rich coming from someone who longs for indentured servants.

I don't believe it notions of propriety. I think it's wise policy for a society to take good care of its baby makers.

I'm curious .... where are you getting your data about 7 year gap in life expectancy ? The stats I see support 5.

Should women be penalized for living longer ?
