SNAP Benefits in Jeopardy

The US govt provides ~ $8 billion / month in benefits to 42M Americans. The average benefit is just under $200 per month.

The government shutdown is jeopardizing the continuity of those benefits to the most needy.

Democrats have tried to negotiate a standalone agreement to continue SNAP while the larger govt shutdown over health insurance subsidies remains unresolved. At this point, the GOP is not agreeing.

There seems to be something of a brutal nature in US politics which is manifesting itself as pushing people to the edge of their survival boundaries. I can't imagine that it's a healthy thing for the social fabric of the nation to push the massive struggling class into failure.

Without getting too focused on partisanship .... I'd like to hear people's thoughts and feeling about the possibility of these welfare benefits lapsing ? Is there anyone who thinks this is a good idea ?

Lots of dumb people think its a great idea. Just squeeze and squeeze until something breaks.

12 months ago the right said they just wanted prices to go down so everyone could eat and now they claim they don't want people to eat while prices keep going up

You have to wonder what these people actually believe in. Seems like nothing

First off its not 42 million Americans as approx 1.74 million folks on SNAP are non citizens ( No i am not saying illegal immigrants)

Of course its a terrible idea along with people not being paid

I think the US is one of the only countries were you spend the money than vote to approve it

This could end today if the Dems would pass a clean CR .

Someone is going to cave soon not sure who it will be

Yeah, let the unemployed Canadian Nazi explain a complicated political topic to you and ignore the fact that he can't write 5 short sentences in proper English...

"Its not 42 million its 40.25" doesn't go hard like you think it does

At least here in California*, supermarkets can't even legally give special discounts to folks who normally use food stamps who can't now use them because of the shutdown.

*might be a federal law

Churches can and are providing cover in the immediate.

Ideally, churches would make this program obsolete. This would be healthy for society.

How about raising the Federal minimum wage to $11.25

I like this idea, but ultimately it's just a bandaid on the structural gash of our implementation of capitalism.

Was a bit confused about this one too.... It's not 42 million it's 40 million. Aaaaaand?

Respectfully but you gotta get over this whole ''dems are responsible'' thing. It's honestly laughable at this point to continue this obviously flawed statement over and over and over again.

And your side needs to get over its the Republicans fault. Ultimately one party can vote for a clean CR like has been done multiple times. It was Obama that said Ill never negotiate pass the CR or shut it down but bow that is not a viable argument

They both are causing the shut down. Republicans want the shut down because they can do whatever they want while blaming the Democrats for continuing the shut down.

The Democrats are standing on their principals about subsidy for citizens. It really comes down to if you think they are right to do this.

But objectively, what the Republicans want is worse for the general public and what the Democrats want is better for the general public. This is actually impossible to argue against

So while its fair to support the Republicans in this instance, the only way to support the Republicans in this instance is to admit to being an elitist who doesn't care about poorer people in this country

They control all three branches of government.

I don't even think you need to make a moral argument here, because it generally falls on deaf ears any ways.

You can just make a common sense argument. If you want an economic system that doesn't tax corporations and wealthy individuals properly, incentivizing them to re-invest in their business and pay living wages, then you at least need to acknowledge that as a society, you'll need to supplement that in order to not have a complete cast system.

Amazing how unintelligent you can be . They need 60 votes in the senate . Keep parroting what Democrats say when the shoe is on the other foot

That’s not my “side”. I just recognize it’s both sides causing the shutdown.

All you are capable of producing is “it’s the dems fault”. It’s boring.

Republicans refused to pass clean CR's 3x in recent history. Why... ? What was their big moral stance?

2013: defunding or delaying the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

2018–2019: demanding border wall funding under Trump.

2023: spending caps, cuts to social programs, or limits on Ukraine aid.

This is the FIRST time the dems have refused to... and it's because they have an actual moral cause.

I know none of this matters to you... but it should imho.

by Trolly McTrollson m

They control all three branches of government.

'Control' a bit of an overstatement imo. If that were the case, there wouldn't be a shutdown right now.

So go tell Donny Deals to go make a deal. Isn't that what he's supposed to be good at? Or just nuke the filibuster. Sorry that your team sucks at basic governance, didn't seem to be this big of a problem when Obama was president.

'control' is a completely accurate statement. There's a shutdown because Republicans are incompetent.

Nope it’s because the democrats keep voting to shut it down

The Democrats and Republicans are locked in a standoff over health insurance subsidies and SNAP benefits are effectively a hostage.

So ... the relevant questions for you citizens is this.

1) Do you want the health insurance subsidies to expire ?

2) Do you want the SNAP benefits to expire ?

Let's please try to get away from tribal party affiliation and just be sincere as to your wishes as citizens.

What an absolutely disingenuous question framed to pretend to be bipartisan just asking questions

Hint: what do you think the Venn diagram for snap recipients who happen to be on the ACA looks like?
