Triplechain

Triplechain

For the puzzle maniacs under you: this game is a must. It is a very simple, yet very deep game. It is a very quick game - just a couple of minutes to complete it.

You play 1-2 games and you understand the rules
You play 10-20 games and you have found a decent strategy
You play 100-200 games and every time you find ways to optimize, adjust and tune your play.

The game´s website is here

The game was invented by zac777 and introduced in this 2+2 thread here.

There are different modes of play:

 • Normal
 • Advanced, in which you can manipulate throws. You will be able to manipulate more if you play more, gain more points and move up in player level.
 • Timed, real time multiplayer mode with chat. 3 minutes per game and everyone faces the same 9 throws, trying to outscore each other. Very challenging. My favorite mode.
 • Daily challenge, in which everyone can participate and try and make the maximum score with a fixed sequence of throws. Find the path to the topscore and beat the rest of the world. I try and find a moment every day to compete in the daily challenge (currently 14 wins 😃)

You will need to create an account to play advanced, timed or the daily challenge.

An utterly sick strat post was made by Dynasty here. Don´t read this until you have played at least 10-20 games.

i'm going to reimport everything to do with tournaments to be safe. anything created on the new site will be wiped

Tournaments should be better now. Also, the new name servers for triplechain.net haven't propagated everywhere yet. www.triplechain.net should work for everyone, but triplechain.net may take a while longer to show up.

Hey Zac -- I'm not seeing the past DC results; I just get a blank page. Also, I just played nine tournament games (Eight or Better 95), and the site shows me winning by overall total rather than by games (doesn't show the winners for any of the games).

Thanks for the heads-up. I think I found the problem and squashed it. It won't fix yours retroactively, which shouldn't matter too much since your were correctly marked as the winner.

Oh, and the DC results look like a display issue. They're below the list of dates. I'll add that to my list to clean up.

Not a big deal, but I had a game get in the top 5 for the last 24 hours. It didn't show up until I refreshed the page. I think it previously showed up as soon as I finished the game.

Hey Zac,

On the main page and the leaders page, having the square with the colour of the rating to the left of the player name would make the formatting neater. I think that's how it was on the old site.

I just played the Daily Challenge.

On rack 8, I had two dice left (a 4 and a 2). I tried to grab the 4 and drag it to a square. However, I was dragging both dice. It was as if they were glued together. Then, I tried to drag the 2 but the two dice were still glued together.

I tried several times and always got the same result.

Then, I tried undoing the whole round and placed my dice in a different order. That worked and I completed the game.

I had a similar issue, but I clicked on the screen away from the dice and then it let me pick up just one.

I can left-click onto any score and see the game.

However, if I right-click and try to open a score in a new tab, I get:

Hi folks, The Winter Classic Triple Crown (white trophy) tournament is coming soon.

Please see post 2024-23 in the Tourney News section on the TC site for info.

You will note that the 30 Game FFA portion of the tourney is starting later than normal. I am doing this in case any glitches with tournaments need to be addressed before we start the 30 game FFA. Thx.

I was playing a tournament game and placed a die and the site jumped to the daily game which was finished. I went back in the browser and it brought me back to the tournament game in progress and was able to continue from there.

Another thing I've noticed, with the updated site, when I go to it, I have to refresh it to get daily game and tournament info refreshed, On the old site, whenever I came to the site, this information was current and didn't need refreshing.

Does anyone else feel like placing dice on the new site feels "clunky"? Sometimes, the dice just doesn't go where I place it and it takes me 2-3 tries, and it just feels slower overall.

Yes, and it sometimes seems like it changes what dice I picked, and I have to undo it.

It won't let me login as a guest for the chat. I tried to post earlier that I had the same problem as Arctick with the daily yesterday, had the resume and played it again same way and it took it. It also happened in Variance is a Beach 193 against Cherrrycin. I finished the round and it gave me resume and I replayed it the same way, when I was done the second time, it showed the score as 0 - 0 even though Cherrycin hadn't played that game.

I thought I posted this in the chat, but I just looked and saw that it wasn't there and I couldn't log in as a guest.

I just logged in to the game again and now my post in chat is there when it wasn't just a while ago.

Hey all, I had a chance to clean up a few things today.

Fixed
- "Ahh, Bliss" (no threes) advanced mode ability
- Multi-dice select and drag
- Link to next tournament game after finishing one
- Added protection against multiple games for the same person in the same challenge

UI cleanup
- Remove extra white space on right side of top menu
- Move DC boards to the right of winners' list
- Fix: replay buttons wrap to next line
- Compress height of height of top score rows
- Move colored rating square to left of name

open bugs
- chain id 11798717. looks like the six placement on the final rack was counted twice
- oddness with puzzle solving (need more info)
- challenge not detected as finished. added protection and logging for multiple games from same person in same challenge

@arjun and @lilrascal - what browser do you use? it's very fast for me on chrome (desktop) and safari.

@lilrascal - when you're talking about daily info refreshing, do you mean that you'd have a browser tab open on the main page and when you visited the next day, the new challenge would be available to play without refreshing?

u rock Zac!!!

I use chrome on a chromebook, things are much better now. Not seeing the issues that I saw previously.

October 2024 DC Highlights

Monthly Race

 • SubArcticK prevailed in a competitive October DC race, posting the lowest winning score since August 2022. SubArc tied for the most top-10 scores (19) and top-five scores (12), and his three wins were tied for third during the month. It was SubArcticK’s second monthly DC win in 2024 and 15th overall – the fourth-most in DC history.

 • velourfog and Dynasty finished in second and third place, respectively, in October. Both players had 18 top-10 scores, but Dynasty had more wins (4 to 3) and top-five scores (12 to 9) than velourfog. However, all 9 of v-fog’s top-five scores were in the top 3, while half of Dynasty’s top-five scores were fifth-place finishes.

 • wafflesobv and SmalltownBoy rounded out the top five. wafflesobv had just 13 top-10 scores, but 10 of them were in the top 4, including three wins. SmalltownBoy posted 14 top-10 scores, 8 of which were in the top 4 (including three wins).

 • Among the rest of the top 10, quaspl (sixth place) tied for the most top-10 scores with 19, but failed to get a win during the month; Derwi (eighth place) tied with Dynasty for the most wins in October; and nails (ninth place) also had 19 top-10 scores, tied with SubArcticK and quaspl, but needed a win on the last day of the month to sneak into the top 10. anton-09 and shamsnemesis finished just outside the top 10.

Milestones

 • On October 4, wafflesobv played in his 4,000th DC, becoming the 10th player to reach this milestone.

Stat of the Month

 • 25.7: The average number of players in the DC in October -- the most since October 2022.

2024 Yearly Race

Surprised I hung on. I had over 200 points on the 20th, and nothing went right after that.

Seems like everyone had trouble getting some momentum going in October..

Registration is now open (for 1 week) to join the 2024 Winter Classic Bonus Point Tourney.

This tourney is one of three ways to earn points in the 2024 Winter Classic Triple Crown (white trophy) tourney. Please see post 2024-23 in Tourney News for all the info on the tourney.

Also, the tourney sign-up says 50 games but it will only be 30 games. Unfortunately the system does not have a 30 game option. You will have about 20 days to play the 30 games.

Did dogfloss make TH10’s Advanced Opening a thing of the past for “Advanced Mode”?

In looking at dogfloss’ relatively new high score in Advanced mode I was curious as to how many higher scores are still possible. Dogfloss’ top game is below.

As anyone who has played advanced mode knows, just getting a “clean game” (no 4s or 3s; no connected 1s; and no unpaired 2s) is quite difficult. The likelihood of getting a clean game depends on how many edit abilities you have earned (and whether you are using the optimum options) and how many attempts you are making to get a high score.

I would guess that if you had 19 edit abilities (as I do), and only started games with racks 1 and 2 holding no 3s or 4s, that you would probably get a clean completed game once in every 200 to 300 attempts. And, if you are only trying for a clean game you are most certainly abandoning dozens of games until it occurs.

The table below shows, as far as I can tell, the only possible scenarios that could beat dogfloss’ recent score of 74,800. Dogfloss’ score is ranked as the 11th highest possible score, and there are only 10 ways left to get a better score. There are no possible higher scores with 8 fives. Any future score that beats dogfloss has to have 7 or 6 fives.

Considering the number of 5s required to reach the “highest” score, this raises the question of whether the Advanced opening is still the best option for Advanced mode. In considering TH10’s epic post of 2011 on how to maximize scoring opportunities by using his “Advanced Opening,” it is rather interesting that we are now in a situation where the advanced strategy only speaks to four of the possible ten ways to beat 74,800. For six of these possibilities a player would need to play the 5s as the major inner chain of the Dynasty opening, as shown below.

Also, here is a link to TH10's post (post 766 in this thread) https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showp...

While it is considerably more likely to get seven 5s in a clean game than it would be to get six 5s, if you are going for "highest score" it would still seem optimal to start 5s in the inner major position of the Dynasty opening, as you keep your options open for both six or seven 5s, whereas the Advanced setup simply can't be completed with six 5s.

NOTE: The above only applies if you are playing to get the “highest” score. If that is not the case, then starting your 5s in the advanced position is no doubt fine for getting scores in the 70,000 plus range. But, if your goal is “highest” score, is it time to look at the Dynasty alignment for 5s and pray for a flood of 6s and for 5s to dry up?
