Regular Run of the Mill NO LIST Codenames!
Post if you want in, ideally 8 people but the normal game - guess your stuff and ideally go fast bolding away a guess at
Although jam + 1 might serve better by restaurant as coffee and piano and jam fit that quite well. Or cafe
So maybe jam is wrong

I guess nobody here has heard of the Mercury Lounge...it's a pretty famous music venue in NYC.
Building was intended for castle/embassy/state. I specifically only clued 3 for 2 reasons: a) I didn't want center being guessed, and b) I wanted to leave theater on the board as a blocker for reds. I never thought for a single second that you wouldn't guess castle for a friggin' BUILDING clue. Blows my mind.
At that point we were pretty much dead because you cleared up the Threads clue for red, and I now had to reclue castle while avoiding king/Arthur, and you were obviously not gonna wanna guess it now either.
Oh boy this is going to be tricky.
Psyop, operations (often government) being done to manipulate.
Could be at my glance:
Army
Farm
Jam
Troll
Center
Tube
Too many for me to real really confident on, so my inclination is just go for the most obvious ones.
Button
Troll
Army
Shadow
works for me.
Best post in codenames history?
Damn, coulda had it in 2. Gg!
Don’t know Mercury lounge but it had to be for something since capitalized so coulda gotten there
Think with 3 clue we go castle ~every time here
I would think you'd go capital with a 3 clue ~always. Was the last word mentioned and talked about a shitton more than castle ever was. Also, good luck getting ervin off it a second time lol.
3 clue woulda been a tossup, idk if I would have been talked into either tbh because I would have argued it should have been a 4 clue
Kinda think it mighta worked better...woulda wiped 4 words off and less headache for you and us, them guessing it and losing their turn is nice but that requires them to guess it(which I've seen teams blow up entire list after 1 turn, sometimes you can count on it but I don't too much) and also mess up the following turn for them to make up for us not clearing 1/8 of the words ourselves
Not saying I would have gone for mercury with lounge - 3 but we would figure it's a proper name w capital, 1 to go would give it a little better chance than 2
This is part of what makes codenames fun to me though, can try different cool ideas and strategies - def an interesting way to play it
I mean, you guessed violet because you thought Violet Lounge sounded like a thing, so why would cluing 1 less word change that?
As for theater, well that was easy enough to clue for even if they didn't guess it. And it wasn't just that word that was the blocker...they had a bunch of other movie related words they now knew to avoid.
Codenames 101 is to not guess a word that the other team has high on their list unless the clue hits it obviously harder than anything else, and castle was the strongest hit of all imo.
I wouldn't say "castle was high on their list" - neil mentioned it, insanity was ambivalent and EB seemed very opposed - probably would expect them to get to it <50% of the time after new clue
I pushed for violet cause that sounded familiar and seemed like we'd need 2 proper nouns/possible stretches, with only one it's easier for any underdog to come through
All a pretty tough combo nevertheless, mercury is a very annoying word in this
I assume you mean theater, not castle?
They probably wouldn't guess it next turn because they had button ahead of it, but that's irrelevant. It would actually be better for us if they didn't tho becuase it remains a blocker that ibd now has to clue around and it's just gonna be real tough in a no list situation.
I don't blame you for guessing violet either. It does sound like it could be a thing and if you haven't heard of mercury lounge, then that's as good a guess as any. Was a hail mary clue anyway.
And yeah, mercury sucked here. I could've done a Queen clue to group it with a bunch of stuff, but king was assassin so options were very limited for that and castle.
Really the most shocking part in all this is that anything was guessed ahead of castle, let alone 3 words!
oh yea I forgot about King, annoying to have 1 of the 2 already narrow routes closed off
kinda made sense since we had the capital talk and so State had to be #1, Embassy is definitely a building and also would think a word you want off, and then it looked like a toss-up castle/theater and one was neutral. maybe it coulda worked strategically game wise but also with the downside possibility of your team guessing like this and ensuing confusion - 4 clue just seems most clear
good try - never disappointed with a spymaster putting thought into the game and going for a plan, the mercury was definitely tricky...mercury lounge probably less known than kakuro here :p
I had never heard of mercury lounge tbh
I did plump for castle kinda annoyed I didn't push harder ah well
On us
By the way the Threads movie is worth a watch if you're into that sort of movie. It's a grittier version of The Day After that just goes completely over the top at the end.
