I think I like penguin next.
There are some 1.5 step connections like lock and well that are possible, but I don't really like.
Beaver and box are both slang for female genitalia.
Could see penguin as they’re both semi aquatic.
The first one wasn’t a joke btw, and I think should at least be considered.
I guess current platypus penguin is easily gettablr without beaver (something wayery)

Ice because it's water and causes rust. I'll grant that it's a 1.5-step connection, but I don't think this can just be 3 metal things, otherwise the clue would just be metal.
(Unless you're right and it is just metal things and the rust clue is actually to avoid copper. I could see both ways.)
The clue is rusted, not rust or rusting. So ice doesn’t work as well here imo. It works less than water, and I’m not even sure I’d be on water if it were on the board.
And yeah, if copper isn’t ours, then metal can’t be the clue.
I still like the three metal things on the board that can be rusted.
Maybe turkey for the last beaver word?

I prefer turkey to the other animal on the board, and don’t see anything else to close out the clue.
