I think he’s avoiding fence by going grave and not graveyard/cemetery.
Might be apocryphal, but I’ve heard about how back in the day bells were sometimes placed at graves with strings attached so a person could ring it if they were accidentally buried alive.
This clue could also be avoiding nail and chest by not clueing coffin.
