I've got the first category thoroughly listened to, ranked and written up ready to go.

Sorry it's been such a wait. I won't bore you with the details.

A reminder of what we're doing here:

So I've enjoyed the recent couple of Walruses and thought I'd jump on the band wagon.

Stuff available on YouTube in the UK please.

tl;dr up front and details in the spoiler below.

1. Something with no vocals.
2. Send me the best 3 songs a band/singer has got and I'll rank everyone's 3rd best.
3. A song I've never heard from a country I've never been to.
4. 1950s or earlier (no classical music allowed).
5. A song with difficult to understand lyrics (English language).
6. 150 seconds long or less.
7. A song from a band with at least 6 concurrent members.
8. A solo piece from someone more famous for being in a band.
9. A song from a self titled album.
10. Great song from a terrible human.

If anyone happens to be railing this one the reveal for category 1 will happen a little later.

I've pmd the contestants to give them a chance to see the reveal as it's happening rather than stumbling upon it weeks later.

1. Something with no vocals

Reveal will happen later but in case you get here early here are a few songs I would have submitted for this category if I was faced with it:

Wish I could remember what I submitted lol

So here we go...

Max Richter - On the Nature of Daylight
https://youtu.be/rVN1B-tUpgs?si=p8MXmIcQ...

This didn't do it for me. I get what you were going for but it missed in my case. It's background music to me. If I first heard it while watching an emotional scene in a movie then I might have more of a connection to the song, but I didn't. It's clear it wants me to be emotional, but I don't know what I should be emotional about. 6+ minutes of pretty much the same thing over and over. The musicians are talented and I'm sure this has its place but this isn't the place for it.

Intervals - Vantablack

I can appreciate this music a lot more when it's part of a song with vocals. As fast and furious as it is, it just kinda bores me. No real hook, just a metal jamming session. It just left me wanting. Props for going for a less common genre though. And props to the band as well for naming themselves after paint.

Never heard metal prog before. I like

Also, the song is named after a paint. The band is named after my Wednesday session at the track

5th IBeDrummin

God is an Astronaut - Fragile
https://youtu.be/lbdoZKyLRZw

Slow and moody start, I'm hoping it builds to something good. 2 minutes in and I'm kinda losing hope that it will build to anything that good. But at 2 minutes 40 seconds it actually does build to something better. But not hugely better and before you know it the song is over. I can imagine this music being powerful to some people and putting them in the right place, but just not for me unfortunately.

4th FerencL

The Surf Coasters - Hungarian Dance No.5
https://youtu.be/gsoCzJwv_W0?si=pdj6gx5Q...

This started strong. Lots of Quentin Tarantino movie sound track vibes. I'm really on board with the melody and hook but think this would have been a better song if it was just 1 minute and 30 seconds long. It's shown me everything good by then. Everything after this is either a repeat or musical tangents that just don't really work for me. A song of two halves for me.

Podium Hype

Neojiba – Tico Tico no Fubรก
https://youtu.be/SFRR3wdmDqE?si=jW0xfeLb...

I liked this one a lot. It's lively and playful. I don't listen to this sort of music at all which is one of the main reasons to tuna walrus.
It seems like you took it as a personal challenge to go off the beaten track for this one and it paid off. I don't really have much more to say about this one except to repeat that it's lively, fun and a wild ride from start to finish.

This is great

2nd Falconhoof

Angine de Poitrine - Fabienk
https://youtu.be/pRgHYWOtqqc?si=fxs6z0yu...

This is a great piece of music. The first few seconds I'm hoping it builds to something good and it continues to make me think this for the first 2 minutes. There are good fills along the way but I'm hoping it's more than this. Then at 2 minutes and 10 seconds it fulfills its potential. I'm a sucker for talented musicians but this was more than that. I criticised a previous song for showing me everything it had up front and then going off on disappointing tangents. The tangents here are great and don't feel disjointed from the rest of the music.

But wait, what's that? Sounds like lyrics. Check the video for the first time to see if they're actually singing or if it's just an effects pedal or something.

Ok wasn't expecting those costumes, but we'll get past that for now. It seems to be coming from an effects pedal but sounds like vocals. *proceeds to look up lyrics and it is indeed vocals and they're saying Sebastian*

I double checked the tl;dr and it doesn't mention automatic disqualification or anything but there has to be some penalty. I'm bumping this song down 1 place from first to second. If there were more vocals or more obvious vocals it would be a harsher penalty, but this feels right.

So the winner is...

1st Eric

Frank Mills - Peter Piper
https://youtu.be/4VisjVQ1NUk?si=EGp8tuLv...

This was so close to being first on merit alone. It's really lovely. Just the right level of fun, light, bouncy and melodic for what I'm liking right now. Church organ and strings coming in to compliment the piano and drums are spot on. Great song, well done.

Hahaha welp. I genuinely thought it was some random effect rather than one of them praising their booking agent. I'll take best song though!

This wasn't one of the categories where I was expecting to do well. Hoping for better soon.

Wow, Montreal gets #1 and #2.
Didn't realize xander was into easy listening. I should have entered something from my massive Ronnie Aldrich collection.
