2024 Summer Olympics from Paris
Amazed we don't have a thread yet. I will do up a fancier OP tomorrow but this will do for now as a placeholder.
Women's softball opens the games in roughly 5hrs with soccer/football, archery and some other sports starting before the opening ceremony Friday night Japan time.
PREDICTIONS: Rona causes a stupid amount of issues, I still waste approx 100hrs of coverage anyway.
Wish I could find a line on Lopez in Greco Roman final. Goung for record 5th gold in same event against a friend and former Cuban.
He wasn't losing anyways, but the setup is perfect.
LOL at the Serbians allowing themselves to get absolutely cooked by Patty Mills.
And then LOL at Australia for letting Serbia come back from 24 pts down.
This may be a stupid question, but it is generally understood that you can bang and grab more in international basketball than you can in the NBA. I assume that the answer is yes.
Patty Mills is getting a max contract this offseason
Women's bball lines make absolutely zero sense
Belgium is 69% to beat Spain in the quarters, where they will then play the France/Germany winner. They were big favorites over Germany (then lost) but have covered twice since then.
Belgium is +172 to medal and Spain is +158
Belgium is +370 to silver and Spain is +390
That means if you take Belgium's line to beat Spain, they only need to be 51% to medal conditional on beating Spain, which is insane. They're at worst 40% (and probably closer to like 48%) to beat the Germany/France winner, and then again at worst 40% to beat Australia/Serbia. So they're at worst like 64% to medal, if not slightly higher.
The only way this line makes any sense is if there's a redraw after the quarters and they would have to face USA in the semis, but everywhere I look that does not seem to be the case.
The line adjustments have been pretty aggressive, which makes sense. Spain was -7 against China, then China was -7.5 against Serbia, then Spain was only -3.5 against Serbia
And France women are the second best team. Australia was +180 against them, then won, so they are AT WORST +180 in a rematch, and probably better, and then probably even better than that against germany or spain or belgium
They're 77% to beat Serbia in R1, then only 28% to medal?
Even if they are 0% to beat USA, that means they only have to be 37% in the bronze game to break even, and their WORST CASE scenario is 36%, and I think they're probably more like 45-50%.
And that's assuming they play USA in the second round and never win. Obviously they can win like 2-3% of the time or whatever, and then if I'm wrong about the above and there is some kind of redraw then that must strictly benefit them.
I mean yeah these lines are obviously wrong. Germany is +172 to medal and +205 in their first round game lmao. Spain +158 to medal and +198 in their first round game. Somebody done goofed
BTW as far as video evidence goes, there's a guy that 5'2" that can dunk. Will Eason appears to be the world's shortest dunker, and his technique is exactly what I expected to see. At 5'8 I used to try the same technique and I was pretty close when I was in my early 20's (and I do in fact have video footage of some of my attempts so I'm not bs'ing)
some serious homecooking ongoing for France vs Canada

Claiming you have videos and posting said videos are totally different things.
Yeah but perhaps she's not the best example for such hypotheticals on account of the bronze 1500m medal she already got in Tokyo, although perhaps her usual style of just sticking around, confident in her ability to sprint towards the end wouldn't quite work against the people from the 400.
I believe it was only last week that she announced that she wasn't going to run the 1500 this time, but only 5k, 10k, marathon, after doing 1500, 5k, 10k in Tokyo.
I thought it was a good example. Hassan has gold in the 5k and 10k? I'm pretty sure that fits the requirement.
Oh Canada Basketball falling to France!
inb4 Chilltown rant
I want to see a gold medal sprinter race a gold medal distance racer in an in between race.
like a 400m champ vs a 5000m champ in like a 1500m
Sprinters, i.e 100/200/400 are a different breed to 800+ runners.
Look at the 800 last night. It was a tactical race. Some runners trying to keep it slow for the first lap in an attempt to out-sprint the better runners at the end.
There are no tactics in the sprints other than sprint, hence the name. Remember how Daley Thompson used to huff and puff his way through the 1500? Sprinting is about power and strength.
Long distance runners often move up in distance as they get better at their craft. Paula Radcliffe went from a world finalist in the 3000m to breaking the marathon world record in 10 years.

Also, distance runners do sprint distances all the time.
Didn't see the game but apparently Murray/Brooks played like complete ass to cost Canada the win.
Disappointing.
This 1500 is insane.
What were the odds on the american bloke? did he just beat his own PB by 3sec?
Well, he ate the **** in the end now, didn't he?
