2024 MLB Season Thread

Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.

Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:

-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.

If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.

In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?

T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.

So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!

Turns out the only player worse than Randy Arozarena is Jackson Holliday. Batting a robust .033

Max Fried with a gorgeous takedown of the Marlins. CGSO in I think 29 batters faced.

lol Astros

Was thinking I had run out of personal stat assaults on the record book box score tracking after all these decades (starting with beyond epic Mays/Aaron duel to catch Ruth), but a few things are happening to tickle my stat bone.

De La Cruz ripping, slugging and stealing (13 XBH, 7 dingers, 15 steals with a week left in April). His K ratio still doesn't portend that he can sustain, but on the hopeful side his walk rates have been increasing significantly since he broke in.

Ohtani with 14 doubles (already the 2nd most ever in April apparently). Most ever in a month 20.

The perennial hope that Trout can stay healthy and put up a super monster season north of 50 dingers (already 10).

Seeing if Acuna or somebody can score 150 runs.

Seeing if Freeman can get to 600 or 700 doubles.

Mookie watch.

Kershaw GOAT bid.

I'm sure there is plenty more. But my "heyday" ended with Pujols one of those special players that from his first season you track to see just how deep into the Hall of Fame annals he gets.

If someone scores 150 runs it's Mookie Betts.

Trout finally hitting 50 home runs but as a DH that hits .240 would be an interesting career turn.

Pitchers unfortunately don't put up anything particularly impressive anymore as workloads are so low. I thought it was interesting how of the 3 active pitchers that lead the fiel by far in WAR, all 3 didn't start in their teams first 15 or so games. Verlander now has, Kershaw and Scherzer well have to wait.

Feels bad having passed on Ohtani in Fantasy but I know I am not alone.

Acuna scored 149 runs last year and is averaging one run per game this year while not hitting. Dude is sick. Betts high is 135, twice around 130-ish both in injury years. He's also at exactly one run per game this year, while hitting crazy. Weird how it works. Barry Bonds had a repeating high of 129 and then when he went super nova with homers, walks, avg. and OB% it stayed on 129 ... as he aged.

The way he's playing with pitcher to draw disengagement is gonna be a lot of steals. He could 30/30 this year

What kind of pre-season odds could you have gotten that after 25 games, the Astros would be at least 3 games back of the As in the standings. Nevermind the Angels.

Answer: All of them

Royals up 1-0 going into the top of the 9th against the Tigazz.

It's now 8-0 with 1 out and a pitching change.

People in Detroit have to be the dumbest segment of the population for putting up with those TV broadcasters' voices.

He's played 21 games in center and 4 at dh this year.

It could happen another year. I wasn't being super serious with that comment though.

Here's a fun stat. Scherzer leads Verlander by 14 k's for the active lead. Verlander is in a rotation now while Scherzer is just starting rehab. Could be some back and forth on this one.

Rendon cementing his status as the biggest bust in mlb history

Rough

I only know 1 player in the Rockies lineup, but the runs will be coming in Mex city today. O/U17

Yordong with a 461 ft bomb, and some guy named Mcmahon with a 459 ft, so far in the 4th.

Wyatt Langford finally got his first home run today.

INSIDE THE PARK !!!

Thinking that's got to be a first in MLB history.

Definitely not. I'm sure it's randomly happened in the last few decades but in the old timey days when home runs were rare inside the parkers were way more common than they are today.

Even in modern years I can remember some occasions where players got an inside the parker as their first.

Welp. They just put up the stat. It's the 4th time it has happened. Still pretty cool.

I'm surprised it's only the 4th time actually.

I'm losing it. 4 Rangers have done it. Way more common than I thought.

White Sox swept Tampa. Fedde has figured something out

makes way more sense.

Yankees scored 15 runs in consecutive games.

Last time they even scored 10 runs was June of last year.

Brewers using a position player to pitch for the second game in a row.

Will the Yankees counter with a position player of their own again?
