2024 MLB Season Thread
Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.
Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:
-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.
If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.
In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?
T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.
So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!
OH!
2015 Altuve!
200 hits
66 runs
1976 Willy Montanez:
206 hits
74 runs
1968 Felipe Alou:
210 hits
72 runs
2023 Luis Arraez:
203 hits
71 runs
1926 Eddie Brown:
201 hits
71 runs
Unfortunately this is one of those trivia questions where I was looking for the answer and didn't know it. I came across Arraez at 71 runs, hitting .354, over 200 hits, and it really jumped out, so I started looking for it. Apparently he is the modern record from your research. Altuve was 86 runs in 2015, I'm showing, and I'd be shocked if a player with his speed and SBs had a record like that.
Ohtani becomes the first 45-45 man, and counting. Kind of fun. Getting ready to set the homer record for 40 SB seasons. Just hope he can finish it off.
Mets are now in the 3rd Wild Card spot. One game up on the Braves, 0.5 game back of the Snakes and 2.5 games back of the Padres.
They’ve now won 9 in a row. First time since 2018. OMG YOU GOTTA BELIEVE!
Quintana pitches a shutout after going 1-5 in August with an ERA as high as my age....
just feeling some lingering 1980s/early 90s hate toward the Mets as a crads fan...don't mind me
Not minding you at all !
It looks like Elly is 3-for-5 in steals over the last 30 games. Hmm.
First ever 46-46 man. BTW, does picked off count as caught stealing, breaking his 23 consecutive streak?
Judge has zero homers in September.
Straight picked off no. But if you're caught running to the next base on a pick off attempt yes.
Haven't seen the replay. Box score says picked off, not caught stealing. So I guess that's it. Streak still alive. Something tells me he won't make it to 50 without breaking the streak, or till the end of the year anyway.
Ohtani leading the NL in homers and being 2nd in steals is pretty outrageous. Also leading the NL in RBIs while spending most of the year batting leadoff or 2nd, not sure if he ever even batted lower in the order this year than 2nd.
I imagine you have to go back to ancient times for any player to lead the league in both steals and home runs. But I wonder if any player has ever led the league in RBI without being a 3/4/5 hitter. Or what the most games leading off in a season is for any player who led in RBI.
Another steal for Ohtani
Can someone remind the Phillies that this game doesn't matter?
Lindor is the People's MVP.
47/48
Seasons with 30 HRs, 40 doubles, and 10 triples in history?? Witt has done it this year. If you throw in 30 steals (he's 2 short), 100 RBIs, 100 runs, and 200 hits that's a pretty sick campaign and maybe unique in history, or at least modern history.
Ohtani gonna create some bizarre club of 400 homers, 200 steals, with 100 wins and 1500 strikeouts as a pitcher. Those pitching milestones look questionable but 50 wins and 1000 strikeouts seem likely.
Babe Ruth won 94 games as a pitcher. What's especially crazy to think about is that he randomly threw a complete game at age 35 and another one at age 38, in the only 2 games he pitched after age 26.
September:
Schwarber 7 homers
Judge 0 homers
If Ohtani can somehow catch and surpass Judge (keep walking him!!!!) then I win a preseason boost wager on who would lead majors in HRs (DK promo).
