2024 MLB Season Thread

Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.

Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:

-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.

If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.

In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?

T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.

So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!

Jose Ramirez still dumbfounds me. 40 SB, 37 HR all with that chubby 5'9 190lb body. Almost as impressive as Altuve over the years.

Tigs bringing in recently called up 22 year old filthy Jackson Jobe.

I've seen him up close and even 5'9 is really pushing it .

He also hustles on every play which is nice to see from a star.

That's two gates and ad revenue.

1 gate. Straight dh.

If the games don't matter for anything but seeding both teams should forfeit one game and tell Manfred to pound sand.

newb stat question. Total Bases as a stat....how is that calculated? I can't think of an obvious way for it to be calculated when I look at the HR, triple, double, single and SB stats for any player

# singles + (2 * # doubles) + (3 * # triples) + (4 * # HR) = Total Bases

Walks and SB don't factor at all.

That would be both hilarious and awesome.

On Ramirez and Altuve. Us short guys often know we are at a disadvantage from an early age and are thus motivated more to train hard in the gym and also maximize the body that we have. Also shorter guys tend to have better acceleration when running and base stealing in baseball is pretty much just an acceleration race. Ohtani this I believe became the tallest player to ever steal 50 bases. Shorter guys in baseball also benefit slightly from the smaller strike zone.

Baseball jerseys are worn in a pretty unflattering way, a lot of baseball players are jacked and strong but the way the jersey fits them it often isn't so obvious.

my entire life i thought total bases included walks and hbp until i bet on a few and the guy had enough walks but still lost

I have the same problem. A lot of people don't know how jacked and tan I am when I wear my full on body suit and go streaking at Yankee Stadium, trying to get fired so I can become the new head of scouting for the Mets.

TB/AB = SLG

Widespread power outages forecast for ATL. So the game should be free to locals if they can actually make it, but if that is the case why not just schedule the KC series and Mets games at a neutral site. Selig didn't hesitate to **** the Astros in 2008 with a neutral site of Mil vs the Cubs, while TB was available.

Who has led their league or the majors in doubles and triples in the same season? Duran is doing it this year.

It looks like in the modern game Lou Brock did it in 1968 (46 doubles, 12 triples), Zoilo Versalles in 1965 (45 and 12), Cesar Tovar in 1970 (36 and 13). Great old names, remember them well. A bit surprised Zoilo and Tovar showed up on this. Before that in the old days some of the huge names did it: Hornsby, Cobb, Wagner, Musial, a few others. 10 players in history have done it. Musial did it 4 times in the '40's.

Metropolitan stadium. Not too crazy, but still big to get those triple in.

Zoilo, Tovar

Left field: 343 ft (105 m)
Left-center: 365 ft (111 m)
Center field: 402 ft (123 m)
Right-center: 370 ft (113 m)
Right field: 330 ft (101 m)
Backstop: 60 ft (18 m)
Wall: 8 feet (2.4 m)

Most teams a player has hit 50 or more home runs for in his career:

Gary Sheffield did it for 4 teams. (If you make 40 or more homers, he did it for 6 teams.) Off the top of my head I bet that 40 homers for 6 different teams might be a record.

But gotta make it a rounder number. Most teams a player has hit 50 homers for over his career: Gary Sheffield with 4 is where I'm starting. Eddie Murray my fave came to mind, not quite, just 3 teams with 50 and 4 teams with 40.

Anyway, who hit 50 or more homers for 4 or more teams (not in a single season but career for the various teams) besides Sheffield?

It must be hard to slug .500. Duran has 48 doubles, 14 triples, 21 homers -- that's 83 XBHs -- is nearly hitting .300, but his slugging is below .500? Seems weird. How can that be a thing? Maths? 😀

.497 is pretty close, and the 21 home runs and 54 walks are both pretty low (walks matter because his lower OBP means he's making more outs, which drives his SLG down. Change a couple of his outs into walks and he clears the .500 mark, he's that close). In fact, if you take about 20 of his outs and turn them into walks, then suddenly he becomes Freddie Freeman-ish (career SLG of .512 with career BA of .300). If you look at guys with less than 25 home runs and an avg. below .300, you probably will mostly see SLG below .500. The majority of .500 slg guys are probably 30+ home runs.

AL league average SLG is a meager .395 this year. In 2000 it peaked at .443

I'm guessing nobody, but I'll look. 50 HR seasons are a rarity and teams have tended to keep guys that could do that.

Nobody can root for someone with that mustache goatee combo.

Not a chance in hell Jose Ramirez is 5'9".

The angels are a ****ing useless franchise

Players on teams like the Wsox and Marlin trying to prove themselves to be big leaguers is great, but still **** the owners for throwing them under a bus and not letting them actually compete on a real team.

Spoiler

wsox strangely tricky in competing, but still have never signed a 9 figure contract despite being a team in ****ing CHICAGO.

Duran also has 660 ABs, leading the league. 723 PA's for him this year, thats a lot. Ohtani leads the NL with 711.

Jimmy Rollins 778 in 2007 is the record.

This seems like a stat made for Beltre and Beltran

Yeah, but again 50 hrs is rare.

McGriff was my first thought

He had 50+ for 4 different teams

and then 42 for another team

Arod had 150+ for 3 different teams that's probably a record.

Canseco cleared 40 for 5 different teams, but only 50 for 2 of those.

Kingman cleared 75 for 4 different teams

Beltre cleared 100 with 3 teams but only had 28 with Boston.

Beltran cleared 50 with 4 teams but only 37 with Houston

For a guy with only 331 career homers, JD Martinez has really spread them around too,

It really amazes me that Coors is the best hitters park every single year, and yet the Rockies have never had a really consistent power hitter take full advantage of that.

If they ever got their hands on a premier slugger.... but they never have. Larry Walker was the closest but he was injury prone and only there for 1/2 of this career.

Todd Helton was the best hitter to be there for a full career. .855 road OPS vs 1.048 home

Walker had 597 games at Coors. 1.172 OPS there vs a career road OPS of .865

How Harold Baines is a Hall of Famer but Larry Walker isn't is ridiculous.
