Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:
-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.
If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.
In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?

The Mets knew that Williams isn't a strike thrower and waited him out. Somehow the Reds still can't ****ing figure it out facing him 18 times a year.
in context, the mets only had 2 guys reach base in innings 1-8 after lindor doubled to lead off the game.
they seemed hopelessly doomed until the brewers brought in williams to pitch the 9th inning....

I always feel terrible for the home team in these spots, unless it's a team I actively hate.

I would be very curious to know if the Mets picked up on this. It's relatively obvious from the camera angle, but in the batter's box, you would be mostly relying on the fact that he was holding his glove further from his face on the change-up, and I think that was the less reliable indicator.

lol, interesting I came to the exact opposite conclusion. It's absolutely absurd to take a first pitch down the middle in a spot like that and the fact that he was tipping pitches might explain it. He didn't wanna swing at a first pitch change-up so just decided before it was even thrown he would take it. If the dude is tipping there is value to getting a look and feel for them before you swing. The mets only would have known type of pitch, not location, so if Pete just decided he wanted to look at the CU before swinging and was taking all the way it would explain why he let one go by down the middle.
But more importantly jomboy caught and did his usual lip-reading with the hitting coach before the Pete at-bat. If not for that I'd say this is probably looking for it after the fact, but the lip reading stuff leans me towards tipping pitches.
I don't think they knew anything. Second batter was first pitch fastball swinging all the way. Third batter got caught looking fastball, chop foul...annoucers even said it. Pete's homer? He said in a bunch of interviews after the game.... he got the 3-1 count. He was looking for anything out over the plate to get a good swing on. He got it. You can watch the inning, they didnt know imo.
I'm starting to lean towards NOT tipped pitches now as a lot of internet sleuths (who don't have a financial incentive to create content like jomboy does) have given a lot more photos of his stances before various pitches where it's much harder to tell.
We're also thinking of this as a binary, but it may be a known thing for this pitcher he has a tendency to fan glove on changeups sometimes, but it doesn't mean he was tipping EVERY pitch even if he tipped a couple.
I don't think Alonso's interview really means anything 1 way or the other though, what else is he gonna say?

You think today is bad- the AL has an off day between games 1 and 2, 2 and 3 and 4 and 5.
Odd Skubal isnt starting game 1 on normal rest.
