2024 MLB Season Thread
Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.
Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:
-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.
If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.
In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?
T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.
So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!
The Yankees have what it takes
Boone legit trying to throw this game
Guy not good enough to make the playoffs roster.
Gets on for injury.
So use him in a super high leverage spot.
Make sense.
Is that Bill Buckner's ghost?
GJGE Rizzo. imo
Clase more cooked than this top sirloin I'm crushing.
Clase is the biggest playoff collapse this century
Is this datacast on all broadcasts or just MAX?
Classe looking like right handed Chapman
They scored that ball Rizzo missed a hit
Thankfully Clase is a huge fraud.
Please retire Rizzo.
Speaking as a neutral watcher, I think there is a mild overreaction to how 'bad' the Rizzo error was, and this play was mostly Mark Leiter Junior's fault. The feeling of course is the throw was right "at" Rizzo and hes a major leaguer and he should catch it, and while that's true, Leiter made the play as difficult as possible. He made a close range LOW flip when he had plenty of time to make the throw. You catch a normal height ball glove open with the opening facing down. You catch a low ball glove open with the opening facing up. Or in other words he had to flip his wrist depending on the height of the throw. You can see Rizzo set for a chest high throw and then last minute has to flip his glove, it might have maybe even been an easier play if the ball was lower but it was almost high enough to be caught normally and Rizzo got caught in between. Yeah he still has to catch it, but Leiter also has to not turn a very easy play into a moderately difficult one.

Mets/Dodgers
A terrible matchup for the Mets as their mid pitchers thrive on throwing balls, walking the ballpark, and getting bottom of orders to get themselves out. The Dodgers are the best 1-9 offense and while the broadcast is Ohtani Ohtani Ohtani, it's the bottom of the order that scares me from a relative standpoint.
The Mets 'strange' offense hits the 1 pitch fastball guys but struggles itself against junk, so the Mets also may have been expected to not take advantage of the Dodgers biggest weakness, which is their SP.
Good news for my Mets imo is of the 3 games left to win, Game 5 would be the least likely with Peterson/Senga against the Dodgers best remaining starter. I'll take Manaea against a bullpen game (The Mets being a tough team to try this against)... and I'll take Walker Buehler trying to replicate that performance in warmer weather.
I have little faith in the Mets pitching silencing the Dodgers bats , particularly in game 7, and if the Mets are going to win this series they'll have to do it with their bats, which they can. There will be no Mets 3-2 victories.

Random unrelated thing.... Smoltz claimed he was surprised the Mets didn't IW Ohtani in the top of the 2nd up 3-1 with 2 outs and Mookie Betts on deck. He wanted to put a fast tying run on first for MOOKIE BETTS with a lefty on the mound in the 4th inning against a pitcher who walks the ballpark as it is. This is the best color commentator the net work can get for the NLCS and World Series? He's boring as hell and not very bright.
👍 👍 👍
I feel obliged to point out Clase had a historically dominant regular season.
But this will be what people remember.
Like Brad Lidge, when Pujols ripped his heart from his chest and ate it in front of him as the life slowly drained from his face.

Yea but this is Clase's third clunker in 4 playoff games. Anyone can get tanked once.

1) that was horrendous by Rizzo. Embarrassingly bad. He's also had a couple other plays he's missed that were catchable.
I've seen pitchers knock down grounders before and rush a throw and never saw a first baseman whiff on a throw right at them like that.
2)Smoltz is an intolerable idiot.
The fact a lefty was on the mound for that comment made it even dumber. It's like he didn't watch the game before where Ohtani I walked 3 times and scored all 3 of them or seen baseball the last decade to know who Betts is.
Stanton so ****ing clutch
What a shot
Stanton!!!
What a hanger.
Stanton is literally Reggie Jackson in the playoffs.
I hope we get 14 innings
