Spring Football 2024: It's the UFL this time!

It's that time again. Now that the Fall Football Season is over, it's time, once again, for Spring Football and the thread which will be largely myself and CowboyCold talking to each other.

This year, it takes the form of the United Football League. A merger of last year's two leagues, the XFL and USFL. Four teams from each league have survived and following a series of dispersal drafts, form the best rosters of the remaining players.

USFL Conference:
Birmingham Stallions (USFL Champs)
Memphis Showboats
Michigan Panthers
Houston Roughnecks (The Houston Gamblers but rebranded as the Gamblers never played in Houston)

XFL Conference:
Arlington Renegades (XFL Champs)
DC Defenders
San Antonio Brahmas
St. Louis Battlehawks

The schedule is less stupid this year with every game on Sat/Sun and at regular times. More games are on Fox/ABC this year, with a handful on ESPN as well.

Week 1:
Birmingham @ Arlington 12pm SAT (Fox)
STL @ Michigan 4pm SAT (Fox)

DC @ SA 12pm SUN (ESPN)
Memphis @ Houston 3pm SUN (ESPN)

I put a $100 on the Battlehawks -7. When I was making the bet the nice lady got a big smile on her face and said it was only the 2nd bet she had taken since the lines were released. Found it interesting that the max bet was 1K for sides and $500 for totals. (South Point)

FWIW my adopted team is the Battlehawks since my Vipers didn't make the XFL cut. Think they have the best QB. Beyond that who knows.

Welp. My 1st post in this thread didn't she well. Poo.

Well, had:

In other news, the Michigan Panthers' kicker Jake Bates did not kick in College, and had not made a competitive kick since HS.

He said prior to the game "It's not like they're going to ask me to kick from 65 yards or anything".

Down by 1 with 0:03 left, he's called in to kick the game winning FG from 64 yards and ****ing drills it...

Down by 1 with 0:03 left, he's called in to kick the game winning FG from 64 yards and ****ing drills it... TWICE

Probably would have been good from 67. He hit the net......

Yeah it wasn't close. That dude just got an NFL camp invite based on one play

PANTHAZZZZ

Spoiler
Show

Didn't watch the game, forgot it was on.

DC @ SA game starting in 5 minutes. The last time DC played in SA they **** the bed in the XFL title game last year. Would feel a lot better about this one if their RB Abram Smith didn't tear his ACL right before the year started...

Reggie Barlow is the worst coach in the league, and that's saying something

DC stops SA to force 4th and 11 on the 40.

Barlow calls a TO to ice their kicker as he misses a 58 yard FG.

SA then runs a fake FG and scores a TD to end the half.

Reggie Barlow is a football terrorist

Was that Wade Phillips I saw lurking on the SA sideline?

Was that Wade Phillips I saw lurking on the SA sideline?

It was. He coached for Houston last year, but this year's Houston team is just a rebadged Houston Gamblers from the USFL, so he wasn't brought back.

SA didn't bring back Hines Ward (LOLOLOL) and brought in HOU's coaching staff. Massive upgrade.

Ok this is just nuts. Dude's first ever made FG was in a professional game and was a 64 yard game winner???

(He kicked two FGs in HS, both misses)

Cookus is cooking for Memphis. Think the USFL>XFL pretty clearly so far this year

Gotta start paying attention. Who knew they'd start a game at 11am.

Also it occurred to me a little late last week when I was in Vegas to just take all unders on totals. The defense is always ahead of offenses early in the season. All 4 unders hit last week.

LOLOL Memphis. Incredible collapse.

Jake Bates good from 62 and 53 so far today. Dude might be the best kicker on the planet

Dude is gonna make some scrilla in the NFL next year if he can keep his head right with ball.

They're getting started early. Nice weather should help a decent turnout.

What are tix going for there?

More importantly, what are beer prices?

Not sure honestly. I think that section is $30-40. Beer is like $12 for a 24 oz

Five or so rows up towards the end of the 1st

Someone find me the bad coaches thread. Hohoholy ****

I want that kicker for the NY Jets.

Week 3:

DC @ ARL (-2.5) 1pm FOX

-Take ARL here all day. DC didn't adjust for losing their top 3 WRs and league Best RB prior to the start of the year. Plus they have the WOAT coach. Books haven't seem to have caught up yet

MEM @ BIR (-7) 7pm FOX

Birmingham is the best team in the league, QB issues non-withstanding. Not sure I'm giving up that many in a UFL hame tho.

HOU @ MICH (-2.5) 12pm Sunday ABC

Houston is the worst team in the league, but their upgrade at QB wk2 might help fix that. That Michigan defense is legit tho.

STL (-2) @ SA 3pm ABC

Most interesting game of the week for me. Not sure I agree with the road favorite, but should be a high scoring game.
