2024 NFL Draft Thread

2024 NFL Draft Thread

If this feels like déjà vu, that's because it is. For the second season in a row, the Panthers have the #1 overall pick. It's not often that SE members have the opportunity to start consecutive NFL draft threads as the honorary member whose team has the #1 overall pick.

Oh, ****. You mean we earned the #1 overall pick and don't actually have it?

What? You're saying we traded the #1 overall pick this year for the #1 overall pick last year plus gave up DJM, 1.09, 2.31 and a 2nd round pick next season? Well, surely that means we must have picked someone really good last year.

What's that? Between the last two draft classes, it's possible our guy is the 7th best QB taken in the first round? No ****ing way.

Well, at least we hired some new coaches again. I'm sure it'll work out better this time.

Time for the 10 burning questions of the first round.

1. Will the Bears find a way to fumble the bag, anyways? What will Caleb Williams be wearing and will his nail polish match his outfit?

2. Will NE select a QB, trade back, or take a generational WR with no one to throw the ball to him?

3. Will No.1 Chargers avoid taking a WR hoping that Justin Herbert can both throw and catch the ball?

4. Is Sean Payton actively tanking the Broncos organization even further or will he reach for a QB?

5. Will the Bills take another top 100 pass catcher in the first round or will they expect perennial MVP candidate Jawsh to do it all like Kermit?

6. Will Miami draft the fastest guy in combine history?

7. Will the Panthers wait until 33 to **** it up again or will they try to make another bad trade up?

8. Will the Jets do anything to protect their 40 year old conspiracy theorist politician?

9. Will the Cowboys do anything to improve their team or has Jerry simply stopped caring at this point?

10. What will the 49ers do now that they've finally paid off the Trey Lance trade?

Tune in Thursday at 8 pm eastern to find out.

You know I really believed overnight I’d soften my tone on the falcons but man. This might be the worst off-season sequence in history

You profoundly overpay for an old man off an Achilles tear. In a vacuum defendable considering you’re a qb away from running away with the south and you have a top 10 pick to help fortify the offense and actually maybe if things break right make a deep run

Instead you use that pick on a qb

And not just a qb but probably the 6th best qb of the qbs

And not just the 6th best qb but a qb who is 1 day OLDER than Trey Lance

That’s gonna be a ****ing yikes from me dawg

Regarding the hats: obvs there is a Cricut machine at every draft prospects house that is printing on blank white hats as the player gets his name called.

Or maybe somehow the largest sports league in the world figured out a way to sneak some extra hats in the budget.

The only way this appears remotely defensible is if the falcons turn around and deal Penix to the raiders for a ton. But that seems unlikely

If they deal anyone it's gotta be Cousins. Get out of that contract and try your luck with someone, that however unlikely, could be your franchise QB.

lol

Live on TV I was impressed by the interviewer not blinking an eye and just rephrasing the question. I would have been like WTF and silent for the next 10 seconds.

I doubt Cousins lets them do that for free.

And not

maybe the falcons read this thread and saw my penix praise and liked the cut of my jib?

Sure. I'm just saying if they felt like we can get some good value out of trading one of these guys, then the correct choice is Cousins.

super unlikely, that stuff usually happens immediately

Certainly. But Cousins trade value is significantly impacted by the fact that he can just say "no, thank you".

As of right now I'd think they're both on the roster next season with Cousins starting.

the way i see it, this is the most likely scenario for what transpired

seeing they don't have a top pick and were out of the running for a franchise QB they sign Cousins

in the ensuing month, they were also looking for a late round QB to take to groom for the future and have as a plan B in case Cousins got hurt

during that time, they saw the same thing that I did, that Penix is a generational talent and someone years later pundits will be talking about the insanity that he wasn't even considered among the best in his draft class

Falcons were probably working the trade market seeing what options they had to move back so they could get Penix + another immediate contributor - during this time they heard rumors of others trying to move up to grab him as rival gms wouldn't be worried about letting it slip they liked him since the falcons were obviously not in the QB market

they saw if they didn't take him at 8, he likely wouldn't be available later so just took their guy

it's definitely going to hurt them this year unless they can ship out cousins without taking a bath

but if penix is a generational talent, they are going to look like geniuses

Do people really not know they send each draft prospect 32 hats? Was there a very stupid discussion on this earlier??

If you're saying that Storm Duck (CB out of Louisville and the #400 ranked draft prospect by ESPN.com) got 32 hats from the NFL, I had absolutely no idea. I thought that only applied to players who get coverage.

just my luck that all those qbs taken early and nobody has yet to take rattler

I thought the whole Cousins thing was stupid to begin with. What is ATL hoping and why pay so much. Maybe make playoffs and get crushed, zero future in it, he is old. Some contender team QB goes down, they are out of luck, then I see Cousins being an option. I called them idiots but you guys in offseason thread made the point, they now contend for the divison. And I think it's a great point. Nothing has changed for this year. If the kid they drafted is the future maybe that works too.

hard to overemphasize how bad MIN's move up to get Turner was

it's a huge bonus for NFCN teams that Kwesi is awful at his job

The team traded a future 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounder along with this years 2nd , 5th and 6th to get the 17th best player in the draft

Depends on who you ask. Everyone who had him mocked #8 thinks it's a tremendous deal for MIN.

Good thing #8 was more concerned with drafting their backup QB.

sorry mad, but i'm going to lean into the deep analysis of the dude that created Over The Cap over an internet poster. i'm guessing you didn't read his breakdown. it's the epitome of FO malpractice (unless, of course, Turner is the next LT)

I don't have a personal opinion nor do I really care. Just saying that several analysts had MIN as a big winner for only trading up to #10 for JJ and getting Turner way later than they had anticipated.

If Caleb Williams had been forgotten and MIN traded up to #17 for him the draft compensation comparison would look exactly the same. So if you value Turner as the #17 prospect the trade is terrible. If you value him as the #2 prospect the deal is great.

atlanta wins the draft
