The MMA Thread
Since there's a SE Boxing Thread that evolved out of the PBF/Pac abortion, I thought we should have a SE MMA Thread as well. Threads for individual events don't do as well, they don't get too much traffic unless it's a huge fight, and they usually die shortly afterwards, leaving no place to talk/gossip/whatever about MMA inbetween big fight cards.
So here's the SE MMA Thread. Think of it as Threadzilla for MMA.

Masvidal just "unretired"..
All of Connor's social media stuff is total BS anyway. The only thing I believe is that he really was upset with the UFC telling him they won't put him on 300.
At this point I doubt the UFC cares too much if he/when he fights again. If he wants to fight, they can just put an average Fight Night card together around it and are good to go. Thanks to his salary/PPV points and the structure of the UFC contract with ESPN they might not even make that much more than from a regular PPV though.
In a situation similar to GSP, Bones and to a lesser degree Ngannou, their #1 priority is for them to stay under contract so they can use their name for marketing purposes and most importantly not fight anywhere else.
Is the moneyline likely to move any closer to Strickland over the next few days?
I might be a bit of a betting fish but feel Dricus has to be the favourite and that Strickland is going to struggle against a more well-rounded fighter.

Draftkings today has the exact same odds as 3 weeks ago, Strickland -135 and DDP +114. So the line moved early in DDPs favor (I bought him at +135 but think he opened higher than that) but then stopped. Obvious concern with DDP is that in a 10 year career he went the 3 round distance only once (two years ago against Brad Tavares who isn't a world beater). Now he's supposed to fight 5 rounds against somebody with tremendous cardio. The 5 round distance is a difficult task for anyone with such a huge frame anyway.
Was able to get Gaethje at -150 yesterday (opened at -140 I think) vs. Holloway. He's at -205 right now.
Does anyone know who this is from the UFC 297 press conference?
Odds were getting a bit tighter on Dricus so I put my money down.
Just came to say that I rechecked and DraftKings has Strickland -115 and DDP -105 now.
Also Gaethje at -225 right now and Holloway +185. Wish I had put more on Gaethje 😃 If Max moves to > +200 I'm gonna hedge, just for the sake of it.
Sean Strickland is a dumb ass.
You can't say that stuff in this era.
Looking forward to seeing him lose!
You can hit pregnant women in your car in the ufc and get away with it.
Terrible main card, great main event. Was pleasantly surprised by both of them. FWIW, I also scored it 48-47 DDP.
Didn't think I would ever wish for Joe Rogan but Dominic Cruz was absolutely terrible. How often did Jon Anik have to correct him?
I thought DDP won 48-47 but I thought Strickland looked better overall, finished the fight stronger
blew it losing those middle rds
another way of saying it is i feel like strickland should've been favored and if they fought again i'd favor him, albeit not by much......Granted i doubt he is getting a title rematch anytime soon given the headaches he probably causes the UFC
I rarely watch UFC. Tuned in for the main event and enjoyed watching it. Du Plessis gf is hot.
I couldn't watch it live but caught up and glad to see I finally hit a W.
Some of the scoring earlier in the evening was all over the place so I wasn't feeling confident about going to the judges. I scored it 48-47 to DDP.
I really would have liked to have seen DDP take Strickland down more and actually doing something with it. In R1, DDP played Strickland's game and was getting picked apart. At one point I was worried the Doctor was going to start looking at DDP's eye and wave the fight off knowing my luck.
Strickland lost middle rounds and looked the better fighter in R5. DDP was just winging his punches in last round and Strickland looked a lot fresher.
DDP looked most gassed by the 5th round, until then he had way more spring in his step. First round Strickland annihilated him with jabs, but DDP just kept moving forward and essentially out-energized Strickland in R2-4. He deserved to win but it was close, if Strickland could have scored a knockdown or a takedown I think it would have been enough to win.

If Strickland opens as favorite again, I buy DDP again. Feels like there are a couple obvious adjustments on his side not so much for Strickland. IOW, it's way easier to make a plan for what to do when you get a takedown than for what to do to not get taken down. Outside of "don't box from an upright stance" which is basically all Strickland is doing. I think team DDP was surprised that he was able to take him down so easily.

Based on Dana's stupid comments post fight UFC was rooting hard for Strickland.
if Strickland could have scored a knockdown or a takedown I think it would have been enough to win.
I doubt a takedown would have changed anything outside of round 2 maybe. Knockdown would have changed rounds 2 and 3.
Problem is that I've never seen a Strickland takedown and he didn't even wobble DDP with any of his strikes. It's pretty difficult to knockdown someone with a jab unless you have a lot of power. Which Strickland doesn't.
Fun fact: that was Strickland's third (!) split decision in less than 2 years. All three times the dissenting judge was Sal D'Amato. First fight was vs. Joker that every sane person had 50-45 or 49-46 Strickland. D'Amato had it 49-46 Hermansson. After that he had it 49-46 Strickland vs Cannonier while both other judges had it 49-46 Cannonier. That fight was super difficult to score though.
Last night he scored round 3 for Strickland.
Nothing big, just the usual stuff when he's unhappy about a decision. Scored it for Strickland; everyone around him thought whoever takes round 5 wins the fight; "you have to take it from the champion"..
He just makes it pretty obvious who he likes/dislikes and DDP clearly isn't one of his favorites. No idea why but I guess because he wasn't ready to fight Izzy with the super short turnaround after he beat Bobby Knuckles?
