weird thing just happened in the big bash

bat meets ball, batters scurry through for a quick single, fielder has a shy at the stumps at the bowlers end. it hits the stumps and ball ricochets away allowing the batters to run a second

the captain of the fielding team is stoinis. him and a couple of others have a go at the fielder who threw it at the stumps for allowing an unnecessary run, arms out in the 'why did you do that mate' pose

tv shows a replay, and it was out by half a foot. like not at all close. and it looked out to me when i was watdhing live

no one appealed for the run out, not even the bloke who thew it

Delayed appeals can be fun.

The last ball of the day in a first class match, details forgotten, and the players troop off glad to get some refreshment. On the way back one of the umpires asks the bowler why he didn’t appeal for lbw because he thought it looked out.

Next morning the players take to the field and the bowler shouts howzat, with the umpire compelled to raise the finger.

Replays show that Billings was short of his stumps when the throw hit the non-strike stumps on 12.3. But no one appealed from Stars, so Billings got a gift!

Is that allowed? I would have assumed when the umpires removed the bails the ball was dead and no further chance to appeal.

Dead ball doesn't mean you cannot appeal. The ball is dead when it's settled in the hands or gloves of a fielder or of the bowler.

Just watching it again on Kayo, would help if the stupid commentators could shut up for 5 seconds, should at least be a toggle to switch them off. Stoinis does appeal, he says, “Howzat?” and possibly twice.

Is that not sufficient for an appeal? Do you have to appeal louder or three or more times? Why would the umpire reply with “Do you want me to go upstairs?” Is he suggesting that would be a team review rather than an umpire review?

The correct response from Stoinis should be “I’ve appealed, I’ve done my job, now you do yours.”

I think Billings wasn’t happy because perhaps he thought the umpire was the one who suggested to Stoinis if he wanted to appeal, probably didn’t hear Stoinis did actually appeal, albeit softly and half-heartedly. It’s a stupid rule that you have to appeal for bowled and runouts but players need to remember to get right in the umpire’s face and yell HOWZAT so there’s no question that they are appealing. And do not bowl the next ball until the umpire has come back with a decision.

I think CA will sign off on this. They would say that Stoinis appealed but then withdrew his appeal. Stoinis needs to be better than that.

Sam was pissed because he thought the umpire asked Stoinis, “Do you want to appeal?” which of course an umpire should never do. What he didn’t know was that Stoinis had already appealed, and rather than referring it to the 3rd umpire, for some unknown reason, the umpire asked, “Do you want to send it up?” That question helped Sam because Stoinis did not have the sense to say, “Yes, I have appealed” and Stoinis rescinded his appeal.

That kind of leadership sums up the Stars.

This is also wrong. If that were the case and the bal was dead so soon is settled in the hands of a fielder, runouts wouldn't be a thing apart from deflections.

31.3 Timing of appeals

For an appeal to be valid, it must be made before the bowler begins his/her run-up or, if there is no run-up, his/her bowling action to deliver the next ball, and before Time has been called.

The call of Over does not invalidate an appeal made prior to the start of the following over, provided Time has not been called. See Laws 12.2 (Call of Time) and 17.2 (Start of an over).

12.2 Call of Time

The bowler’s end umpire shall call Time, when the ball is dead, at the end of any session of play or as required by the Laws. See also Law 20.3 (Call of Over or Time).

We are agreeing that dead ball has nothing to do with it. The only question is when it's deemed the start of the next ball is, which is when the bowler has the ball and is beginning their run up.

The key point is that an appeal has to be made before the call of time. The call of time is the end of a session of play.

You're assuming that time was called and that that law was in effect when the incident happened. I suggest you call or write to TMS who discussed this incident on air.

Those guys are so rich and so coddled that it will all be forgotten the next time he scores 80 from 45 in a meaningless T20 but he showed he simply doesn’t have the temperament to be a trustworthy top 6 bat

tbh i dont really have much of a problem with the first innings dismissal. at least there's upside

second innings shot is like going all in on red where if it comes up black you lose and if it comes up red you get your money back

I get the point about upside but IMO first innings dismissal was as bad.
Game situation was also dire and the shot also totally unnecessary. Doubly so given he’s tried and failed it the ball before.

26 wickets left in the test so the consequences less immediately obvious but a goal conceded in the first half is worth the same as one conceded in the second.

I'm just going to say this as someone that did go to the boxing day test match - it was a great match and Australia found a way to win again despite its disappointing batting. Marsh has to go. I'm sick of this boys club culture going on inside the Australian team but if there is a boys club culture going on then for Pat Cummins sake because he seems he wants Marsh around to lift morale (because god knows apart from his catching he doesn't contribute anything else) then select his cricketing brother Sean Abbott as a bowling all-rounder and bat him 7 with Carey coming in at 6.

Also Ussie needs to go - too much of a liability with the world test championship coming up. His scoring rate is too slow and then gets out anyway for usually less than 20. And again no more of this nonsense boys club culture keeping him around because he is such a great personality - I have no doubt that he is and will end up in the commentary box alongside his good mate Warner but the selectors need to make the call and George Bailey needs to grow a couple (same with McDonald - he has the job now so act like a decisive coach).

Yeah, Marsh has had more than enough opportunities. 48 tests and averaging 28 in the middle order is truly desperate stuff.

I think they’ll keep Usman around because his record on the subcontinent is very good and they go to Sri Lankan in Feb.

Just looking at the 2025 schedule and there are no tests after the 2 tests in SL until the Ashes in Nov - terrible

Konstas in Sri Lanka I'm predicting will be a disaster. They will just open with spin against him.

By all accounts he is a very accomplished lad with a strong technique who everyone has had a watch on since he was about 12. And the 1st innings slog was a bit of an aberration. But you are right that they will target him with spin and I’d bet he struggles too.

As a partial edit - I do have something in my head about a West Indies test tour as well but it doesn’t appear to have been locked in yet. Maybe it’s dependent on WTC

I don't know he seems a bit all over the place but all the power to him for getting a test debut so young
