SE Hoya Containment Thread (aka Politics)
Welcome to the Official SE Politics Thread. The aim here is for high quality political discussion and debate. The concomitant aim here is for that high quality discussion and debate to NOT devolve into MAD posting, BAD posting, trolling, name-calling our community fracture.
We embark on this project hoping to encourage fair and thorough exchanges of views, and also fair and thorough advocacy for positions. We should learn a lot.
Rules
1. Posters are required to have 50 posts in SE over the last 365 days. This thread is not a proxy for the Politics forum, or an arena for goal-based issue advocacy from people we don't even know.
2. Pure devil's advocacy will not be tolerated unless it is identified by that poster as the aim of the particular post. There will be no run of the mill nitpickery for the sake of nitpickery.
3. This will be enforced loosely, but you are obligated to outline your basic position on whatever issue you're debating. We will not have loaded, gotcha-style internet-standard race to the bottom terrible posting in this thread. That does not mean you have to state every closely-held belief in every debate. You just can't hide the ball. "I'm not sure what my position is" is a completely valid position to hold.
4. Insults are out. You will not resort to that in this thread, because that will ruin this thread.
5. If you demonstrate an ongoing commitment to lowering the quality of discourse through incessant trolling or simply being really terrible, you'll be removed from this thread.
6. These are subject to significant revision as this thread develops.
There is a tradition in SE of better, fuller, funnier discussion of a really wide range of topics. Let's continue that here.
never under estimate the racism of the american people. a black women never stood a chance.
outside of that, it is really scumbag uneducated poors like victor who are to blame.
This personal attack wasn’t humor based so yeah, please don’t do stuff like that.
Edit: If you come at someone it should be in jest and something we can laugh at. Downright serious personal attacks are frowned upon.
Glad you took it in stride and now that is a pretty humorous request. 👍
If you really want that undertitle I can put in the request for you in the mod forum lol

this had absolutely nothing to do with racism - just pure copium to say that
20% of blacks voted for trump
kamala is one of the worst candidates ever put forward - is not only extremely unlikable (robotically engages with constituents - just look at how she visits businesses and stuff and how stiff and awkward it is) but has a terrible history of policy behind her (being anti-fracking then pretending she never was, claiming to be the person behind the gov providing free bottom surgeries to incarcerated felons and saying we should also give them out for detained illegals) and is not even of average intelligence
for me, that was my line in the sand and why i couldn't vote for her (didn't vote for trump either fwiw, i can't stand him) because you need a leader who is going to lead and not virtue signal
she should be campaigning on free healthcare for all - not just free healthcare for illegal immigrants and felons
any policies put forward by someone of that mindset is going to be 10x worse than anything me first and the gimme gimme trump admin will do
if we didn't already have 4 years of trump where things didn't magically turn to crap like I had expected then i'd be more willing to roll the dice on kamala than trump but in this case it's a "we know trump sucks but we'll be fine" vs "we know kamala sucks and who knows how bad it could get"
if the dems let a good candidate like whitmer or newsom run then i believe they would have won in a close contest - kamala was just the worst of all possible options - including biden
worst part about kamala was she didn't even stand her ground on her own principles, despite claiming she was the person who determined bottom surgeries were a medical necessity she later backpedaled with a "new phone who dis" and said it was up to the doctors and she was staying out of it - same like how she conveniently forgot that she was once favoring banning fracking - she could have just said "as we've become more skilled at fracking and have lowered the risks entailed, my positions on it have changed" and instead she just got campaign amnesia
so not only is she unlikable and stupid, but she's also a coward
honestly, trump, as awful as he is (the worst president we've ever had imo) kamala would have been even worse
dems are gonna look themselves in the mirror, take a deep breath and tell themselves 'we gotta get more racist'

all your post was good, just this point is really true. I mean she has never won anything, at the end of the day you need to win a tough contest. Feels like whoever was controling biden just wanted to stay in power. power is a helluva drug. Time was short but there had to be better people to pick from.
speech and platform actually worse than i expected, idk why i got my hopes up even a little. kinda saw it coming though based on how they actively ignored the genocide all week. i was gonna echo the line about it being a hard pivot back to the center, but tbh the idea that they moved left at all was mostly wishcasting copium type stuff from various people.
didn't see the whole speech, but the only concrete policy i caught was her promising to pass this republican border bill (lol), and the forei
damn thats wild, can't believe it
GENOCIDE!!!!!!!
lol, yeah, that's all fixed now i'm sure....
if you are willing to continually vote for the lesser of two evils, you end up with candidates like hilary, Biden, Kamala... you have to make a stand
cool story bro
rickroll stick to talking about my dick cause saying
"honestly, trump, as awful as he is (the worst president we've ever had imo) kamala would have been even worse"
Is awful.
lol Thinman, what a loser

Biden holds the record for most votes for a candidate fwiw. And if your reason for that is "well, duh, he was facing Trump, anyone could do that!", that theory probably needs reevaluated
trump lost votes since last election. less people voted for trump. this was a lay up election for dems to beat trump.
it wasn't racism that kept people from voting for Kamala, it was genocide and corruption.
ilhan Omar and Rashida tlaib won their elections no problem. meanwhile other Dems are losing and/or fighting for their lives.
This is just terminally online thinking. 10M voters didn't stay home due to Gaza. Shockingly few people are about that outside of self-selected bubbles. Stein got 44k votes in MI, and it's pretty unlikely people upset outright voted for Trump.
Harris won NY by 11%, Biden won by 23%. She won NJ by 5%, Biden won by 16%.
People are dumb and believe Trump will make prices go down (hey google: how does inflation work/is a deflationary economy bad??), she didn't give any simple answers/slogans as to how she was going to help prices and she didn't offer any ways in which she was different than Biden ("I can't think of anything I'd have changed").
The American people are dumb as hell. They don't want climate change fixed or Medicare for all, at least not to know how they work. They want grocery prices cheaper. Just tell them you can do it and you'll get a +5% bump instantly. They won't bother to ask if your policies are going to wreck the economy.
The whole genocide thing is particular ridiculous when considering the fact that Trump administration was the first to consider Israel's settlements in the west bank as being legal and moved the embassy to Jerusalem. Sure, in a vacuum Biden's administration's handling of the Gaza situation has been terrible (and personally I don't even consider it oulandish to call what Israel is doing a genocide) but this isn't in a vacuum. There are settlement leaders (and the Israeli Minister of National Security) already calling for Israel to annex the west bank because Trump was elected. It's hard to imagine how the situation in Gaza could get worse but for the rest of Palestine Trump being elected is a major disaster.
In principal I even sympathise with the whole lesser of two evils comment but this wasn't a case where the two evils were remotely close in scale and that is especially the case when it came to Palestine and Ukraine (although I'm aware the latter is probably not a factor for Victor specifically). It's hard to imagine a worse possible time to "take a stand" against the whole lesser of two evils thing if these were major issues for you.
what was Biden doing to stop the settlements?
Maybe the answer really is a woman/race issue.
Definitely going to be a white guy next election for the D's. Can't blame em.
I'm reading over your post and you seem to be taking exception with a politician changing their views/flip flopping.
Like bruh anyone who gets to that level (of a major party nominee) surely understands the game. Of course you're going to see anyone in that position get "exposed" on probably a bunch of **** they've previously said.
Maybe Obama was the exception but I remember Kerry dodging and weaving for being a flip flopper. The Republicans jumped all over him on that.
But that really matters to you?
Maybe more than say Jeffrey Epstein talking about how he's still buddies with Trump while Trump was in power?
Imposed sanctions on settlement leaders/organisations, including at least one on the payroll of the Israeli defence ministry. Like, sure, it's not a massive amount (although it was still enough to be lambasted by Republicans as being anti-Israel) but it at least tells Israel that they don't have America's support in pushing for further settlements/potential annexation. Trump's administration was tacititly encouraging it and there's a fair chance that Israel annexes the entire region without any reaction from (or if Friedman has Trump's ear, which seems likely, even conceivably with the support of) America under this coming term - it will only be non-US international pressure that could potentially deter it.

slapping weak sanctions on like 5 people is also tacitly encouraging it.

true, but it severely depressed the base. the youth vote, the activists, etc. even most of the hardcore party stans i saw talking about this were like uggghhh. and they barely won in 2020. this L was death by a million different cuts, but everyone wants to blame their fav personal gripe. they're mostly kind of right, to varying degrees.
and then there was nothing to fill those holes. like ok they don't care about the thing i do, but ... but what? they didn't really run on anything but lesser evil fear mongering, which is about all they've run on since obama. you can't just do the "this is the most important election oat!!!" thing every time, and then do nothing when you win.
and it's wild because, based on polling, the electorate largely didn't seem to blame kopala for brandon's failures. she kind of got a fresh start, they seemed to get the election back to ~even around the dnc, she maybe even grabbed the lead, and then ... nothing really. they kept going right, offering nothing, status quo business as usual because don't worry be happy happy joy joy things are going ~ok. these big national polls were showing that like 70-80% of voters wanted a significant break from brandon, but they said no. decided to die on the hill that he basically did a flawless job, for whatever reason. people wanted change, but they once again they said nothing will change. nothing for you, but endless money for wars. gjge
saw the end of john oliver's election pitch, which seem to boil down to you're a little baby if you expect to be inspired, we can push her left after the election, and ... *sigh*. 10m stayed home? huh maybe winning elections is about inspiring ppl after all...

they asked her how she would differ from Brandon and she said that she would put a Republican in cabinet
yeah, it's wild. she kept getting asked questions like that
in hindsight, what's something you could have done differently? um, nothing really. perfect game, babyyy
*facepalm*
pacman crying about losing subs since the election ... hilarious, especially since the last time i saw anything from him he was responding to criticism of his pro-genocide takes by essentially saying **** off then, my subs and $$$ are going up every day, i don't need you
