The ATP/WTA Tennis thread
The cluster**** to the AO seems to have been resolved, and we're ready to fire up the hype for 2021.
I'm running a season
I feel bad for Dimitrov. He's played so well this tournament; dominated Alcaraz, beat Zverev, but he can't seem to find any way through Sinner.
Sinner is #1 in the ATP Race and the Olympics Race, he is the current end boss, a far harder challenge right now than playing Alcaraz. Now #2 in the world, and I’d say a certainty to remain #2 if not grab #1 by the end of the year.
Across RG and Wimbledon, Novak is defending 3300 points, Alcaraz 2800 points while Jannik is only defending 850 points.
French Open has started.
Sinner currently #1 on the live ATP rankings list.
Nagal loses the first set. So did Nadal.
Nagal loses the second set. So did Nadal
It's the year 2024 and NBC is still giving us tape delayed tennis matches for a Major Tournament
Iga, Novak and Zverev have all had tough matches and could have been be out. But Iga has turned things around today in her 4th round against Potapova.
Games won: 12
Points lost: 10
Iga was done by 11:50am.
PS: we really need to get this thread retitled. Donβt think we need a separate thread for each year. Can someone hit up a responsive Mod and get it changed?

Djokic broke the grand slam major matches won record today, it says 370-369 over Fed. Also said he's a crazy 40-11 in 5 set matches (that one includes all matches not just slams). That's two straight grueling 5-setters. No way he can win it, right?
Djokovic has withdrawn with a right knee injury. Sinner will become World No 1 on Monday!
Calling it early.
Novak to win his 25th and last ever grand slam tournament at the 2024 Australian Open.
The world is ending in 6 months?
I'd prefer to get a bit more of a notice next time, thanks!
Dude hobbled around like an old fart and still beat Medvedev in straights. I don't see why he would retire, or fail to keep beating everyone else on the regular, for 2-3 more years. That being said, I think Vak will be more decisive about retirement than most others. More like Sampras, the way he just announced one day "yup I'm done now." No heming and hawing for months/years. N
if i had to choose between @kerr saying he will end with 25 or @krunic thinking he could get to 30 if he wants to i would lean towards @kerr. the dropoff between winning multiple majors a year and never winning a major again is very steep and can happen very quickly and often without warning in advance that it is coming. Rafa went from winning multiple majors in 2022 to draw
coming back to this a year later Novak appears to be on the same path as Rafa, who won multiple majors in 2022 and was drawing dead to ever win another one by 2023, which is not surprising since Novak is exactly one year younger than Rafa. Although I don't think he is drawing stone dead to win another major like Rafa was I could see him gutting out one last AO or Wimby to get to an even 25 (and pass Court) similar to Jack Nicklaus winning the Masters in 1986, but its really hard to see him winning any more than that. At this point i think its like
24 >>>> 25 >>>>>>>>>>> 26+
and 30 is obviously a pipe dream.
Does Novak need to be fully fit to win Wimbledon? Maybe? Probably? Champion effort to have won the last two rounds in 5 sets but it looks like the drop off could be quick. He’s arguably no longer the favourite against Sinner or Alcaraz and his edge against the next tier will continue to decline.
Serena fell 1 short of equaling Margaret Court, at this stage it looks like Novak might fall 1 short of passing Margaret Court.
But knowing the heart of Novak, I can’t put it past him putting it all together one more time for two weeks and reaching #25, problem is I think his best chance is this year’s Wimbledon. It will only get harder and harder as he gets closer to 38yo and beyond.
And lastly, really hope Andreeva can overcome Sabalenka, highly unlikely, but I’m always happy to see Aryna lose. I actually quite like her, I just hate the grunting and can’t ignore it.
Rafa probably has a better chance for another one than Novak. Knee is a bad thing to hurt.
Andreeva is going to be so good when she improves her serve. It's a liability right now.
Somehow youtube knew I wanted to watch 2013 mens french semi vs nadal and djoker
forgot novax may have lost because he barely touched the net on a point
also they look amazing
Coco guaranteed to reach a CH #2 on Monday, Paolini at CH #10 and #7 if she makes the final. Andreeva at CH #23 and #16 if she makes the final.
Looks like Iga’s to lose. She will be 3700 points clear of Coco if she wins her 4th RG title. Most recent women to win 5 grand slam events: Sharapova (2014), Henin (2006), Venus (2005), Serena (2003), Hingis (1999), Seles (1992).
Alcaraz's level has been all over this place in this final. Some great shots followed by double faults and baffling errors.
Complaining about the lack of clay on the court in the middle of the match is a bit pointless.
Lol Margaret Court joke stat. In the 11 Australian opens she won, there were never more than 52 players. A few years were 27, 27, 30, and 32.
Not sure how to tag people, but congrats to krunic the 2+2 poster and the player
Pegula ranked #5, Krunic #400
Fritzy falling apart here
+350 on Barbora today seemed more than generous.
Djokovic-Alcaraz could be an all-timer for many reasons on Sunday. Really have no clue on this one. Gonna bet Djokovic just because of the great odds I can get but it can go either way.
I wish Alcaraz had taunted the crowd more on the Spain-England matchup. If you think Spain is gonna win just say it. **** the boos lol.
Djokovic is obviously still playing well but he looks so much worse physically than he used to - he looked noticeably tired towards the end of a straight sets win today. Feels like he would really struggle if it goes long vs Alcaraz and I can't see him beating him easily.
Beating Medvedev was impressive, but Alcaraz high variance of winners/errors should keep Djokovic in the match. I'll take +125 as value.
Djoker and Rafa may meet in the second round of the Olympics. That would be something.
