What position in professional sports requires the highest level of talent?

I don't have an answer, but I've always blown away by how good professional athletes are, especially pitchers. I remember throwing a baseball at an arcade machine that clocked the speed. After a few throws, I think I maxed out at 54mph, and it felt like I dislocated my shoulder. When I think of 87 mph changeups, it makes me chuckle. I could never throw that fast, let alone keep the ball over the plate.

i am confident that i had more talent when i was playing high school basketball than Shaq ever had, my problem is i quit growing at 6'3".

Hitting a baseball would get my vote.

If you can do it successfully 30% of the time, people will be talking about putting you in the hall of fame.

For my money it's golf. But that could be because I can hit a baseball or a tennis ball, yet can barely make contact with a golf ball.

I think QB is probably the correct answer. At any given time there are only 15-20 humans on earth who can even play it competently in the NFL. The drop off is like if the 30th best hitter in baseball hit .200.

And only like 7-8 are actually “good” at it.

Suzzer wins thread.

Virtually Anyone can hit a baseball given enough tries.

Try batting .300 or hitting 50+ homers in the majors.

did you really think I meant just "hitting a baseball given 1000 tries?"

Come on, man.

Hockey Goalies and Baseball Pitchers.

Solo sports included? I'd say Tennis. Technically, intellectually and physically demanding. Think of how impressive Roger Federer was in his prime.

If teams only, QB in the NFL. Highly exclusive role with huge impact on winrate.

Context man. Context is key, man.

This is almost entirely due to selection bias and not talent prerequisite. The skills required to play an elite NFL QB are not the same ones required for CFB let alone HSFB. In fact, you'd be lucky to ever get a chance playing QB at all since the lower levels of football are filled with ******* dad coaches locking their talentless spawn in at QB.

And even if you get past that, often the coaches are just too ****ing dumb. Remember, Brady was a backup at every level of football: JV, varsity, college, pro. He split time with Drew Henson (lolol) for two years at Michigan. Tough to argue it requires the most talent when no one can even identify that talent before these mfers take live reps in an NFL game. Also recall that he was drafted by the Montreal Expos who thought he could be an all-star level catcher. So it's only by multiple stroke-of-luck inflection points that he ever becomes an NFL starter.

It should be something that doesn't require years of practice, reps, and coaching past adulthood to even have a chance of playing professionally, otherwise it's not really talent we're talking about. That eliminates baseball entirely. I also don't consider being 7' tall a talent, and you need far less talent at that height to become a professional basketball player than anyone who's, say, 6'4" and under.

Then what exactly do you consider a talent?

a special natural ability or aptitude:

a talent for drawing.

Synonyms: genius, gift, capability
a capacity for achievement or success; ability:

young men of talent.
a talented person:

The cast includes many of the theater's major talents.
a group of persons with special ability:

an exhibition of watercolors by the local talent.

A person's height is one of the few things that perfectly fits the definition of talent. It's a natural ability that can't be improved upon with coaching or practice.

"You can't teach height!"
