Refs seemed distracted by the fact that Stidham almost certainly would passed the ball forward absent contact from a defender, but that doesn't matter for the purpose of assessing whether the ball is live.

I think it does. Rule is something like defender materially affecting the ball when attempting to throw a forward pass.

It was clearly a forward pass that was tipped. There's no way to throw a backward pass with the angle his arms were pushing the ball forward.
