In college football, which was king in the early days of football betting, many games were such a prohibitive favorite straight up that the point spread was an ingenious invention to greatly increase action. I mean before that you just couldn't bet on the vast majority of Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Army, Alabama, etc. games.
