NCAA Basketball Thread 2024-2025

Quick OP here just to get us up and running

Things to watch for this year:

1. Can UConn 3-peat? Hurley won back to back championships with Clingan, Tristen Newton, and company. Can he make it a third with only one returning starter?

2. Who will be this years national player of the year? Zach Edey was the best player I've seen play college basketball in my lifetime. People throw the term generational talent around alot and Edey was truly a generational talent winning back to back national player of the year awards. But, now he's gone. So who can win the award?

- the 5th year guards in Mark Sears(Alabama) and RJ Davis(UNC) are a good spot to start. Both elite shooters and engines of an offense, they should lead two really good teams.

- the 5th year centers in Hunter Dickinson(Kansas) and Ryan Kallbrenner(Creighton) are also viable options. They'll be the anchors to what should be two really good teams.

- The phenoms: Cooper Flagg(Duke), Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper(Rutgers), VJ Edgecombe(Baylor), and Tre Johnson(Texas) lead a loaded freshman class.

3. Who are the contenders?

Zach Edey was a great player deserving of his awards but just like the player he beat out for POY last year Dalton Knecht he was far from a generational talent. Players Ive seen live in college include Len Bias, Shaquille O’Oneal and recently Anthony Edwards. Edey belongs on a list with the likes of Christian Laettner but nowhere near a list of generational talents.

Anthony Edwards at Georgia

19.1 pts
5.2 rbs
2.8 asts

40% from the field
.520 TS%
20.8 PER
Missed tournament

Zach Edey last year at Purdue

25.2 pts
12.2 rbs
2.0 asts

62% from the field
.659 TS%
39.3(!!!!!) PER
Back to back NPOY and Title game appearance

Edwards was nowhere near the same stratosphere of college player Edey was.

Anthony Edwards was a better college basketball player than Edey and.....Christian Laettner? Say what?

I suppose reading is tough but the phrase was “generational talent” and not “better college player.” I noted Edey was a great player very deserving of his accolades and never suggested Ant Man should’ve been POY his one season. But yeah when it comes to sheer basketball talent Edwards has light-years more as do countless others recently.

My fault, I thought you were talking about college basketball in the college basketball thread. Zach Edey and Christian Laettner were absolutely generational college basketball talents. How's that?

My fault I thought you understood the difference between productivity and talent. I saw Len Bias go for 28 second half points in Atlanta and watched Ant Man go for 30 in a half against Michigan State in performances that took your breath away and and made you realize you were watching people blessed with “generational talent.” I also watched Edey have a remarkable career with great production but never approach anything that made you feel lucky to watch. Im not degrading him at all and Im sure he’d be the first to admit he doesnt have near the talent of these players.

some impressive (ldo) combined stats/records for KU and UNC ahead of tonight's blue blood clash:

- a combined: 10 NCAA ships, 247 NCAAT wins, 103 NCAAT appearances and 37 F4s

UNC: first in all-time NCAAT wins and F4s, second in NCAAT appearances and third in ships

KU: fourth in all-time in NCAAT wins, fourth in NCAAT appearances, fifth in F4s and seventh in ships

- a combined 30 former players/coaches in the Hall of Fame

- a combined 22 National POYs

- a combined 131 first team All-Americans

- both rank inside the top 3 in cbb history in wins and winning % -- UNC second in winning % and third in wins; KU third in winning % and first in wins

- this is the thirteenth meeting bt the schools (both have 6-6 records)

- have met twice in the NCAAT title game: '57 (UNC win), '22 (KU win)

- KU/UNC is the most frequently played matchup in the history of the F4

- lastly, obv the histories of Dean Smith and Roy Williams bt the two schools

a rare chance to see UNC play at KU. a great night for cbb

I'm a UConn basketball fan. I've watched at least 10 better college basketball players in a UConn jersey than Anthony Edwards. And it's probably more than that. And then I can start talking about opponents.

Calling Anthony Edwards a CBB generational talent is akin to calling Kyrie Irving a CBB generational talent. They are great pros, that's it.

KU needs to spend some of their athletic budget on building operations

ffs

at the half

37.96 possessions

UNC: 1.00 ppp

KU: 1.40 ppp

getting a peak behind the curtains of what this season is going to look like for UNC against teams with solid front courts after missing out on Omoruyi and Ballo

we had something called Ty Claude playing minutes this half

not pretty

This second half sucks…for ****s sake

This has been one hell of a comeback for UNC

Close but no cigar. Great 2nd half effort from what I could tell. At the Hornets game, so only watched the last 4 mins on my phone.

pleasantly surprised UNC made a game out of it

Lubin is a nice piece from the portal. he'll be integral to this season's ceiling

as was the case in our last game of any significance, we ain't going to win vs a top-flight team when RJ goes out there and lays an egg

If that's at a neutral site, UNC may have pulled that off. Felt very Phog Allen magic-y in the last couple minutes.
