Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Seeing Dune 2 at noon on Friday...
Prepare for the gushing!
I think Zendaya might get nominated for this one...
i do not understand why everyone is obsessed with her
On a personal note... I could care less about her as a person, but her performance is really top notch in this vehicle... in the end her heart gets ripped out. The entire cast is operating at optimal levels.
After all these decades of trying and failing to get this book(s) made into a redeeming film, Denis has finally accomplished the un-accomplishable.
If Anything Happens I Love You
See it on Netflix. It's an Oscar winning short animated film, just 12 minutes. No dialogue. It's not necessary.

Kal
Watched the "new" Indiana Jones Movie.
Was an hour too long.
Every scene was...
1) Indy goes and does something.
2) Nazi's turn up and take it from him.
3) Repeat
I cant watch those movies anymore... it's just bad writing and very dated film making. there is nostalgia of course, but that's not enough for me.
Mads Mikkelsen is terrific. Please see Last Round. It's on a couple of streaming services, and the film gives me one idea about how I can become a better teacher.

ANOTHER ROUND (2020)
Director: Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt, The Celebration)
Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe, Magnus Millang, Maria Bonnevie
Anticipation Level: Very High
Thoughts: Four teachers at a high school in Denmark decide to embark on an experiment after realizing they are all in ruts and just going through the motions of life. The experiment? Maintain a blood alcohol content level of 0.05 throughout the day, including at work.
Obviously, I loved this concept. Also, as a recovering alcoholic, I can confidently say the idea has merit... if you maintain a BAC of 0.05, which is something I never considered doing. Without a doubt, I was much more sociable and charismatic when I had a mild buzz going. In fact, towards the end of my drinking days (I'm 10.5 years sober now), when I was at peak semi-functionality, I would have 2-3 drinks before I started a shift serving tables and it made me substantially better at my job. Well, probably not with overall efficiency, but definitely with regards to interacting with my tables. So yeah, I thought Another Round was not only entertaining and relatable, but pretty believable as well. Of course, much like me, these guys escalate their experiment to the point where it becomes problematic for more than one of them.
As if I need to say Mads Mikkelsen is wonderful. You already know that. This is another phenomenal performance to add to his resume, and he can add a super fun dance sequence as a bullet point now. The whole main cast is actually really good, but I'd like to give an extra special shoutout to Thomas Bo Larsen as Tommy because he is great in this.
Another Round is one of my favorite films of 2020. They speak Danish in this film so it will be a strong contender for the International Feature Film Oscar, but it shouldn't be relegated to just that category as it's one of the better movies from last year. This is a must see that you can rent on VOD now. Check it out.
Rating: 8/10 (Great/Must See)
Replay Value: It was fun enough to watch again.
Sequel Potential: Naw.
Oscar Potential: International Feature Film lock nomination. Mads should be in contention for a Best Actor nom, but it seems like actors rarely get nominated for non-English speaking roles.
There's an American remake of Another Round in the works, set to be directed by Chris Rock. Yikes.
saw zone of interest
went in blind, not knowing anything about it other than it's good
feel like it should have had more of a plot and less of an abrupt ending
On the subject of alcoholism portrayed on film, I was and am intrigued by someone under the influence at an illegal level actually being better at their job or an activity like the subject of the movie "Flight".
The quandary of him being buzzed and a danger during normal operations but in a catastrophic failure actually able to perform "better" than if he was sober.
Not a reason to justify it but an interesting moral question.

I did mean Another Round.
Mads trained as both a dancer and an acrobat, and that final scene is amazing. Should be streaming on Kanopy.

.05 would be below the legal limit in WA state (and most states?). I don’t think it would help someone flying a plane do that better lol but a job that centers on human interaction could be a thing (not poker though - tried that too!).
Heard about the Chris Rock remake. Sounds like a dreadful idea.
Another Round is streaming on Hulu and Amazon Prime right now.

That's my point, you don't think it would help, but is it possible at higher levels?
Some people can tolerate pressure and it helps them perform better, other people get pressure and completely fall apart.

I’ve made some deep wsop runs and i definitely would have benefited from having a few drinks in me. If only I could stop after a few though lol.
