Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Watching The Final Countdown from 1980...
It's not a good movie, but it is a fun one and a film I loved when I was a teen.
I like this 'time paradox' movie... it takes the topic seriously and it's packed with great 1970's actors.
I didnt like the Soon-Tek Oh getting killed though.
I think it would have been more interesting if he was introduced to the future.
lol that's another movie
Watched Michael Almereyda's Hamlet today, which stars Ethan Hawke as Hamlet. This is a pared down version of the play, but mostly it works. This Hamlet plays up the theme of surveillance throughout. (The National Theater production that featured Rory Kinnear's great Hamlet also makes use of surveillance as a theme.)
Various sorts of cameras and video are used throughout, including a Fisher-Price Pixel Vision. I like the way the Mousetrap is done as a film. Overall, nice performances, especially from Hawke, Julia Stiles as Ophelia, and Bill Murray as Polonius. Perhaps the play is condensed too much, but the film still conveys its essence. And I doubt many who see it won't be unfamiliar with Hamlet.

I did an action movie marathon early pandemic and I can’t believe I forgot the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. So, I ran through them in anticipation of Axel F.
The first one is still great. I forgot just how good it was. I think the 2nd is better as a whole, but there was very little like the first one when it came out. The 3rd though…. Freaking awful. Top to bottom, pure ****.
As for the 4th, I dig it. Did a bit too much of playing the hits, but it was just great to see the whole gang. JG Levitt was a good addition and Taylour Paige stole the show. Bacon is always solid and Reiser was underused.
Michael Mann's Thief is another of Mann's terrific films. Great performances from James Caan, Tuesday Weld, and Robert Prosky. (And looking at both of them in the film, it's hard to believe Caan is dead and Willie Nelson is alive.)
The film has all the right noir elements, some nice robbery stuff (Mann seems to have been influenced by Rififi), and a love story. Mann is really good at shooting rain-soaked streets, a prerequisite for many noir films. I think it's a film where you know what's going to happen and don't at the same time.
Also watched Manhunter, the first Hannibal Lecktor (it's spelled that way) film. You probably know the basic plot, except this one features an FBI agent brought out of retirement to catch a serial killer. Lecktor has only a small role in the film, and the real focus is on the FBI agent who has seen into Lecktor's mind and becomes like him.
Mann's films present interesting views of masculinity.

No, I mean his character going to 1980 would be another movie
I had the choice tonight to see Close Encounters of the Third Kind, MaXXXine or Horizon... I chose part 1 of a three hour Western and I was glad I did.
I enjoyed Horizon very much despite all the negative press about how self indulgent it was supposed to be. I can see where the story is going with Costner's character, but I still can not wait for part 2.

Mann is my favorite director my far. Not that I think he’s the best, but his movies are my favorites. I’m a sucker for every Mann cliche and even rewatch the ones that aren’t that good. I hope he never stops making movies

It's honestly hard for me to understand wanting to see anything with Kevin Costner as the main creative force behind it. He hasn't even been in anything that I thought sounded interesting in the last 35 years, and I have determined that the one I enjoyed must have been a fluke.

he might not be my favorite but he's right up in my top 5.
I love TLOTM way more than I probably should and have watched it million times and never enjoy it any less and oh man maybe my favorite original score along with true romance.
also think miami vice is way underappreciated and obv heat n collateral are absolutely fantastic. really the only misstep is black hat not sure what happened there.

so funny how much crossover we have, True Romance is my favorite movie. LOTM was my favorite movie as a kid
Agreed, Miami Vice is under appreciated, I also love Public Enemies despite its flaws (although will watch anything with Cotillard)
And the Insider is elite
when i finally saw the unbearable weight of massive talent, i strongly suspected the writers post itt or at least lurk here due to the paddington 2 plot point
there was no sex involved to my knowledge
Looks awful. Can’t wait to see it, lol.
did they really have a trailer for the trailer?\
legit thought denzel was going to say "my man!" in the trailer after that laugh
my favorite porn parody title is, "Glad He At Her."
I'm watching far too many movies lately. I know that seems like a silly thing to say, but for those of you who don't know, I'm banned from driving until October because of seizures.
Last night I had to watch a comedy, so it was My Girl Friday with Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, and Ralph Bellamy. I mention Ralph Bellamy because at one point, Cary Grant tells someone to look for Bellamy's character. Grant says he looks like Ralph Bellamy. Grant also mentions Archie Leach by name.
I love this film despite some dubious racial remarks that had me reading about the writer, Ben Hetch.
It's a comedy of remarriage. People who marry the same person twice are an interesting breed. I guess you need to realize when the right one comes along -- twice.

His Girl Friday is a fantastic script. Peak new atlantic jabbing from Grant and Russell. I love that film.
