Alien Romulus is quite fun. Recycles a lot of the stuff from the old films and doesn't do anything new, but it's packaged well. It may not be possible to make a truly scary Alien movie anymore, because we all know what's going to happen.

Cailee Spaney is great though, a far more worthy successor to Sigourney Weaver than Noomi Rapace was. David Jonsson's android was also great as he goes from inept to calculating.

Lots of recycling and plot holes.
Once I see a possible big snafu it takes me out of the movie and then I start to notice other inconsistent parts.

All I remember is the plot missteps in this one, and have no interest in seeing it again.

From the droid operating without its sim card and knowing its directive, the easy bake xenomorph, and Forrest Gump in space, it quickly became forgettable.

There are plenty more but I don't want to spoil it for those who still want to see it.

Anyone know why Spike Jonze hasn't made a movie in over ten years, since Her? According to IMDB, he's been doing shorts and some TV episodes and music docs on the Beastie Boys...but no feature films.

1999-Being John Malkovich
2002-Adaptation
2009-Where the Wild Things Are
2013-Her

That's a good run... He was in Babylon wasn't he?

I just watched HER the other day... I am MADLY in love with that film.

is IMAX necessary for Alien Romulus?

It's cinematic... might as well go to iMax.
It's worth one good viewing, there's just not enough meat on the one to be called truly great.

I rewatched Chariots of Fire last week, love that movie. For a fuller appreciation it helps being Christian tbh, and knowing Eric Liddell's full story.

Alien Romulus was good fun...quite intense with some great scares and action scenes. If you thought one or two face huggers coming after you was scary, just wait until you see about 30 of them scrambling your way.

Nice "new" view of the stage between the baby aliens and the grown up aliens...where the big one grows big.

Caliee Spaeny is having quite a year...starring in this, Civil War, and Priscilla. She's a nice presence. Liked her since I saw her in the TV show, Devs.

Only complaint I have is that it was quite dark - it was hard to see a lot of the action. And I saw it on MPX.

you drove all the way out to Maya to watch this in MPX?

the movie seems to be doing reasonably well although I think there will be a big drop off over the next week or so.

I thought the acting was quite good, even if there are a few annoying personalities in the group. I have seen all three Films with her in it, and all three were decently good vehicles and not for lack of her acting talent.

Did you get an Alien Head Popcorn Bucket?

lol no, I did not get a bucket. I live in Huntridge, so Maya is only like 15 minutes from me.

I’m glad people itt had fun with Romulus and also glad that it’s apparently doing well box-office wise. Being a bit of a selfish husband I took my wife to see this today (she has barely any knowledge of previous Alien films) for one of our first ventures out since having our first baby and we both had a blast.

I like how they showed that the whole colonization of space was kind of a fail and people on these outposts are depressed sick and hopeless.

Does anyone know if there’s any possibility of the Prometheus/Covenant storyline being wrapped up by Scott or is that killed off for good?

My bad, I thought you were in the southwest

The upcoming Alien: Earth TV series is set 30 years before the original, and apparently will pointedly ignore Prometheus.

I think I am Aliened out... it's gonna take some really great writing/ideas to get me on that train again.
We need a James whale version of Bride of Alien.

Alien: Romulus is just about required viewing if you have seen all or most of the other films. It is good enough story wise, but there is a fine line making a movie without much viewing light.

I think the Predator franchise has had more freedom in where it could go, but I will see any Alien movie made for sure.

Hopefully they will both keep going strong. Prey wasn’t excellent but it was pretty damn good imo

Pedro Almodovar's net film will be his English language debut, called The Room Next Door, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. Yes, please.

Her

I just watched HER the other day... I am MADLY in love with that film.

if you read the synopsis of HER it sounds ridiculous....a grown man falling in love with his virtual assistant? I hate my phone so much and want to throw it out a window daily and would love to strangle whoever it is who programmed the auto correct with my bare hands and watch the life slowly leave their body.

so the idea of someone falling in love with their phone just sounded so stupid.

then I watched HER and also fell in love with his phones AI errrr I mean the movie I loved the movie HAHAHAHAHAHA I TOTALLY DIDNT FALL IN LOVE WITH A VOICE DON'T BE RIDICULOUS....

seriously tho what an absolutely fantastic film it def belongs on my exquisitely curated list of perfect films.

can almost understand why he hasn't made a film since, gotta be hard to top that.

edit: hmmm probably wouldn't work as a draft but some kind of way we could have a fun group compilation of films we each consider perfect.
for instance movies like:

out of sight, children of men, training day, dumb and dumber, true romance, a few good men, 12 monkeys, fear n loathing, zodiac, lebowski, michael clayton, gone baby gone, the drop, nightcrawler, the bourne identity, inglorious basterds, jackie brown, ncfom

and a whole bunch of others, are never going to show up on a list of the greatest films, but I'm fine leaving critics to argue over the godfather vs citizen kane, I wanna list of the movies that are just perfect in our estimation and we'll never stop rewatching them.

by riverboatking k

...leaving critics to argue over the godfather vs citizen kane...

I often quote Peter Griffin, disliking The Godfather because "it insists on itself."(!)

Seriously, I'll take Godfather over Citizen Kane anyday.

re Alien and sequels, I'll stick with Alien and Aliens. That's plenty for me, 2 classic films, 1 classic demon.

My list for 'A Perfect Film' is fairly wide because I try to not assign fault to IP's that are not my own. Speaking in general terms I do find fault with a lot of film I've seen, but when a movie gets near that top 'ten to fifteen' percentile, I tend to accept the film for what it is... faults and all.

if we were to outline more stringent guidelines for perfection, then I suppose I could begin weeding out a number of contenders.

post script:
I have an opinion on Citizen Kane Versus The Godfather... but it would be like arguing that the color Blue is better than Red. I do have a preference based on my 'technical' understanding of color, but I enjoy both immensely.

was not a fan of her, only saw it once though

judging by the timing, could have been fresh off a divorce at the time so perhaps that's why i disliked it so much

Even 'Dislike' is an emotional response... it is definitely not a happy film, and that is precisely the reason I love it.

Repo Man is perfect.
One Shot of the Dead is Perfect.
Fallen Angels is Perfect, but its slow but steady annual climb in the critic'c polls may ruin it for me.
Collateral is a Perfect Watch.

just to be clear that list I posted was just a few off the top of my head and if I actually sat down and thought about it there would be AT LEAST 50 more that made my list if not more.

as the onewhoyawns was kind enough to remind me I left off a bunch of movies from one of my fav filmmakers and last of the mohicans, heat and collateral all make my list and miami vice is really close.

**** even popcorn movies like man on fire with denzel make my list as that's just an absolutely perfect film in the sense I can watch it a million times starting at any point in the movie and never enjoy it any less just exactly what a movie should be like.
nightcrawler is the same way, it may not be close to perfect to most people but to me it's flawless and I'll watch that movie a hundred times at least in my lifetime (well hopefully)

anyway there are so many more so pls just know that me not mentioning a film in no way excludes it from my list I just didn't think the thread needed me to take an hour and think of every single one of my fav films as it's an extremely long list.

just love movies so much.
only thing harder would be trying to narrow down my fav songs as that list is probably in the thousands.

but there are soooooooooo many movies that I would include and stand behind 100%

and won't lie it's hard for me to hold back from making a gigantic list.

Make a draft thread... many of us will join.

Her is a masterpiece and a perfect film...which is why I wondered the other day why Spike Jonze hasn't directed a feature film since Her came out.
