Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Her isa great film. So is Under the Skin from the same era. I doubt if would have watched either if I had relied solely on plot descriptions.
Dial M for Murder
I must have watched it nearly a dozen times. One question: how come Ray Milland, who is a consummate liar and planner of murder in meticulous detail, doesn't simply get a copy of his own latch key cut, to give to the killer, instead of having to filch his wife's key at the last minute to leave under the stair carpet?
I watched Furiosa. I guess it was fine? Some decent action, decent prequel style backstory but ultimately meh. I saw it will likely not rewatch it. Felt basically the same way about Thunder Road. Okay but nothing I ever want to watch again. I know this stuff gets a lot of love but I guess its just not my cup of tea.

I made the assumption that in the period of which the films protagonist lives, there are laws and procedural requirements that would have flagged him. 'Do not copy'...
Well there ya go... the Film should be put on a pure and forgotten for all time.
Wat
Alien: Romulus... meh.
First act was pretty decent, good world building pacing and set-up. Great cinematography. Still struggled to get over the annoying cast. Lead actress in particular was weak. Android (Andy) was good tho.
However, the second and third acts were Alien: Resurrection levels of bad. Also, the constant visual and verbal call-backs to previous films in the franchise were so frequent and shoe-horned in that they took me out of the movie.
Ending was also drawn out and by the end, we're all obviously rooting for the alien.

they missed out on a great 'kill' opportunity with acid in zero gravity...
Great art direction and production values, piss poor writing and story telling.
my problems with Alien: Romulus is that the two male leads were boring, too young, and indistinguishable from one another.
Speaking of "Perfect' films... does anyone think movies like The Breakfast Club or Fast Times at Ridgemont High are Perfect?
What about Animal House or Beverly Hills Cop?
I watched John Hustons Moulin Rouge last night... what a visually beautiful film even though it's aspect ratio was capped at 1.33:1. It was slightly miscast, but the three element technicolor was geourgous to behold so much so that I didn't even care.

Never have I seen a film that featured Happenstance as a leading character with such prominence... so much so as to lesson my faith in the importance of story structure.
But what are you going to do... stupidpeopledostupidthings.

I think all of those films are NEARLY perfect...very good films.
Can't go wrong watching John Huston movies.

Perfect is overrated. What does it even mean?
Perhaps "perfect" might include a fly in the ointment, a slight defect, a flaw that makes the whole even better.
The perfect film or the perfect art work or the perfect woman might only be perfect for you.
Maybe "that's good enough" is the way to go.

Agree with the above. The 3 movies I watched the most often in my life - like MULTIPLE TIMES!!! -, are Annihilation, The Dark Knight Returns and The Doors (when I was much - MUCH - younger). Neither of these are perfect by any means, but they f**king work for me though

One of the many small flaws that adds up. The most annoying one imo:
Prey really nailed it as far as what to do with Alien or Predator sequels - just set the film in a different/interesting time and location with little/no links to any other film and see how those characters deal with the threat.
An Ash clone... of a clone... doing exposition dumps.
It is just heinous.
I didn't mind the Ash synthetic, as you'd assume they'd have different models that they use more than once...and this was the Ash model.
Before Sunset is a perfect film, and you're a bad person if you disagree.
I would love to participate in a film draft of any kind just don't have the time or energy to lead one at the moment.

fast times close to perfect but needs just a little more nudity from JJL n phoebe cates.
not sure if I'm still allowed to say that but man my 14yr old self would have shouted that from the mountain tops.
I watched it on a plane, so not the best viewing conditions, but Aki Kaurismaki’s Fallen Leaves is wonderful. I guess it's a bleak, darkly funny romantic comedy about two people who meet in a karaoke bar, both of whom have quit or been fired from jobs. They don't seem to be able to connect until the end of the film.
Kaurismaki quotes Chaplin's Modern Times in the ending of his film. The couple, backs turned, walk away from the camera. The man has a dog and the woman asks its name. "Chaplin."
Great film.

Animal House? Absolutely!!!!!
The Breakfast Club? Very close (16 Candles Yes!)
Fast Times? Most probably yes.
Beverly Hills Cop? Nah. Although 48 Hours and Trading Places come very close to a YES.
