Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
I thought it was USSR and USA after Kubrick faked the moon landing
Third time in 4 nights at the Beverly...this time to see The Shining.
Gotta admit...while I appreciate that movie, I don't love it. Jack just hams up to a ridiculous degree. Shelly Duval gives the best performance in that film.
thought the movie hit different in theaters.. gained a new appreciation for the music
agree jack's crazytown performance felt over the top, but as far as jack performances go i thought he showed good range
afaik duvall (RIP) was legit terrified and unnerved in real life due to kubrick torturing her on set... mission accomplished i guess? *cringe*
obv
the brutalist preview is intriguing. appreciate trailers that don't spoil the movie. though with this one being 3hr 55min that'd be harder to do:

Speaking of Kubrick and Duvall... 41:50
Busey at the top of his game.
Hundreds of Beavers
Part live action, part animation, part people in beaver costumes. It looks like the kind of movie that Guy Maddin would make if he were making a movie with Charlie Chaplin. It's mostly a silent film.
Guy gets drunk and wrecks his apple jack business. Ends up in the snow-filled woods, trying to survive by trapping anything he can. He's not good at it, but he learns various traps from a master trapper. Oh, and there's also a guy with a supply store and a daughter.
You'll see elements of Chaplin's The Gold Rush and Buster Keaton's stunts. A couple of beavers are dressed like Holmes and Watson. The end of the film looks like a video game.
It's on Amazon now. See if you can spot the "For Sale" sign.

Don's Plum... wow.
what's wow about it?
you can't explain dons plum you can only experience it
Seems like your standard mumblecore conversation movie.
I rewatched Princess Mononoke for the first time in probably 20 years. Even better than I remembered. I watched it with English dubs and could not place Billy Bob even though the voice was so familiar. Ended up stumbling on this article which was a really interesting read:
film executive Steve Alpert recalls a moment when Suzuki presented Weinstein with a perfect replica of a Japanese samurai sword. He then, in front of a "horrified" conference room of Miramax employees, "shouted in English and in a loud voice, 'Mononoke Hime, NO CUT!'"
It goes into far more interesting things than bringing it to America, but this was a highlight.
I showed my film class a scene from Inception, the one that switches back and forth from the fight in a hallway to the characters sleeping in a van as the van flips over. A nice example of crosscutting, especially with the characters in the hallway sticking to the walls and the ceiling during the fight.
One woman said she saw a similar scene in an old movie but couldn't remember what it was.
I said oh, yeah, that was Fred Astaire in Royal Wedding when he dances on the wall and the ceiling. Showed the class the scene, and the woman kind of shouted, "That's it."
The other students gave me a look like how the **** did he know that.
This is the best film class I've ever had, and it makes teaching so much fun.

Karloff? Sidekick?

haha that's great...
Heretic - Hugh Grant is incredibly good. He's so much better now that his romantic lead days are behind him.
The film's creepy, well written, well acted, but way too stagey. Some of the extended conversation became a bit tedious. I kept thinking throughout how much more effective this would be on stage.
How could you believe me when I said I loved you when you know I've been a liar all my life?
I got a lovely Franco Nero box set with three lessor known Italian dramas... based around organized crime.
It's so funny how the Italian cosa nostra is portrayed when compared to the americanized versions of the mafia.
oh that's cool
from my perspective, the Italian version of organized crime (specially historically) is much more grounded and foundational.
Cosa Nostra, as portrayed in films that I have seen, is far more grassroots and personal... far less 'organized/refined' or 'hierarchical', the militaristic command structure is not as clearly developed... specially pre CIA influence from the mid 20th century.
Family really meant family, as opposed to 'a friend of mine/friend of ours' that the US based Mafia often suggests.

Really cool opening scene with a “NEON” sign, but it’s not part of the movie.
“How the hell does this work?” The sound! The ambient sound is the star of the picture. Second billing goes to the music. The cast does a wonderful job of listening to it.
I wish I had a coffee vending machine in the alley by my door.
The greatest movie ever made. The car chases need work, but the sight gags are perfect. Nothing happens. Mandatory viewing from the guy who gave us Paris, Texas. Check it out!
Like I had mentioned when Perfect Days first came out... for me, it is like looking into a mirror.
