TV: what have you been watching?

I think The Walking Dead may be the best drama thats currently airing/in production.

There, I said it.

I loved The Leftovers, and its final episode was perfect. I think it's underrated.

During college most of us would stay in Saturday night to watch M.A.S.H., All in the Family, The Bob Newhart Show, and Mary Tyler Moore. Then we'd go out drinking.

The Leftovers was brilliant, wouldn't call it underrated though. Not amongst critics anyway.

My favorites, based on how many times I've rewatched, are The Sopranos and Breaking Bad, closely followed by the Shield which is due for a rewatch sometime soon. And of course Survivor is must watch TV still even though I think it has dropped off significantly.

Justified near the top as well.

in no particular order, ok well in some particular order.

band of brothers
sopranos
the wire
deadwood
bojack horseman
generation kill
madmen
true detective s1
justified s2
breaking bad
mr inbetween
fargo
leftovers
the knick
succession
godless
man hunt
slow horses
rome
columbo (pure nostalgia)

ok gonna stop now or this will get out of hand sure there are some more recent shows and mini series im leaving off and I'll regret forgetting later but oh well and also obv didn't include comedies otherwise list would've been way longer.

but I do think band of brothers is the greatest thing ever made for TV.

What is Man Hunt?

Ah ok...I'm not familiar with that one, and there are like 4 different shows with the title Manhunt lol. Also thought you might be talking about Mindhunter.

Fwiw there is another show called Manhunt focused on the Unabomber that is well worth a watch.

Mindhunter was p good too

Preach brother. I do think The Pacific was almost as good though, even better than BoB in some episodes. But overall BoB is still king. What did u think of Masters of the Air? Pretty big letdown for me tbh.

Also add Lost, The Shield and Spartacus to that top series list though.

In a similar vein to BoB/Pacific - SAS: Rogue Heroes was great, and the second season should be coming out later this year.

I also couldn't get into Masters of the Air. I can't really put my finger on why not, I liked the cast and thought the production was generally v.good, just didn't capture me at all.

I think mini-series should be a seperate catagory from multi-seasonal shows. I find it hard to compare a single season (or less) of dedicated concetrated episodes with something that spans several seasons (ie Band of Brothers vs Sopranos).

Agreed...same with anthologies.

TD s1 was great obv, but the rest of them don't even come close, so it seems unfair to judge it against something that was consistent from go to whoa.

rbk with a great list, that doesn't include comedies, but of course includes Bojack Horseman, lol. Love you rbk. Which leads me to my next list. **** you guys rave about that I just didn't get:

True Detective S1, thought it was good but not close to the reviews it gets here. I do need to watch it again though to make sure I just wasn't in a weird place first go round. I think Daddario's tits are what skew it so hard for most, which is understandable, they're magnificent. I also liked the follow up seasons just fine, but they get so much hate in here. Not the latest season though, that was pretty bleh for me too.

Bojack Horseman, gave it several attempts but just never could see what makes it so good rbk has to mention it in every other post. I'm just not much of a sitcom guy anymore, I guess. I like them when I watch them, but just can't make myself binge them.

Fleabag, another sitcom that just didn't really do it for me, maybe because of all the over the top reviews it just couldn't live up to for me.

Nobody has mentioned Game of Thrones. Does it count? Probably my favorite behind Band of Brothers.

I loved GoT, but man, that last season sure didn't do it any favors as far as all time greats lists.

I’m a biased fantasy nerd but GOT is my #1 fav, even though it’s not to close to the best show I’ve seen, nothing else had me so excited each week for years.

Still bitter they couldn’t nail the last season tho

Off the top of my head, the shows I've enjoyed the most are: The Bureau, Gomorrah, The Knick, and Mad Men.

ya actually probably should have included mindhunter on the list it was fantastic and I'm a massive fincher fanboy.

the pacific was outstanding but ya I dunno what it was about masters of the air I was so excited for it and has a great cast and it just did not do it for me at all.
might take another run at it eventually but it was just a monumental let down and from pretty early on I stopped caring altogether about watching the next episode.

lol marknfw fair enough but honestly I don't even categorize BH as a comedy despite the fact it can be very funny it's so much more and really gets quite dark as the series progresses.
it does take a few episodes to find itself so I always urge ppl to not judge it too quickly.
I have watched all the shows on my list (and many others as well) more times each than I can keep track of but bojack is the only one I ever watched and then immediately started over from the beginning it's def not a sitcom and I truly consider it a work of genius that's the best thing made in the past decade.

as for GoT I loved the first few seasons then it fell apart but same as with the books what I love even more in that universe are the dunk and egg stories (a knight of the seven kingdoms) and I am absolutely thru the roof excited for the HBO adaptation that's currently in the works.
I would so much prefer grrm write more dunk n egg stories than finish the winds of winter.

oh mark one last thing I'll say about bojack (for now obv I'm sure I'll continue pimping it in every other post lol) is that very similar to arrested development (another genius show) you really have to pay attention as there are no throwaway lines so not a show to have on in the background if you really want to get everything out of it.

also tons of sight gags as well in the background, I was getting more out of it on my 5th rewatch.

GoT is probably the one highly acclaimed show I haven't been able to bring myself to watch. Not a big fantasy guy at all, and knowing that everyone hates the ending doesn't help either...that pretty much always ruins the whole thing for me.

fwiw before GoT I wasn't into fantasy at all and I still haven't found another fantasy series that hooked me like GoT did (suggestions always welcomed I have tried starting in the name of the wind a few times haven't gotten very far).

the 1st few seasons are absolutely fantastic and the 1st 4 books are really good I've read them a few times as well as listened to them as audiobooks (great in that format as well) and they are really good even for someone who's never had any interest in that genre.

there is very little of the things one associates with fantasy.

Not a fantasy guy at all but GoT season one hooked me hard and I loved it. I immediately read all the available books before season 2 came out. Loved the books but was very disappointed the series wasn't completed (still isn't!).

But after season one the tv show kinda sucked to eventually becoming horrible. I will never understand the praise and accolades the tv show gets. Very strong start to a hard fizzle.

I must be one of the only peeps in the world that actually really liked GOT's last season, didn't mind Soprano's ending or Battlestar Galactica's for that matter.

The Bureau is unmatched
