Joseph Heller still dead, still at 76 (and other celebrity deaths): RIP Hank Aaron and Willie Mays

When an interviewer told Mr. Heller that he had never written anything as good as ''Catch-22,'' the author shot back, ''Who has?''

Bill Walton was a Hippie! RIP old man.

Watch some videos of Walton in his college days. Not only could he shoot and rebound, he was a great passer.

Agree. Walton in college was constantly compared with Kareem, whom he succeeded at UCLA, but was great to watch in his own right.

See also Deadhead.

Larry Allen. Cowboys legend and one of the best offensive lineman I've ever seen. Absolute beast.

Allen had one of the all-time great NFL plays of all time. Pretty cool for a guard.

Chet Walker died, great Chicago Bull and before that a member of that great 76er team with Wilt that was, in previous eras, considered to be one of the greatest evaa.

Walker in his prime musta been a wonder to behold, seeing how the old stars talk about him with reverence. Bill Cosby liked to mention him, for instance.

RIP Chet "The Jet" Walker. Back when I was a kid and still liked the NBA I was an avid Bulls fan and he was one of my favorites. I loved those teams. Along with Bob "Butterbean" Love they made one of the better forward combos back in the day. Those 2 guys amounted for most of the Bulls scoring back then.

Chet 'The Jet' Walker and Bob 'Butterbean' Love
what a combo

Jerry West died. Zeke from Cabin Creek, folk legend to Naismith-type NBA stature.

My first basketball memories date exactly to the 1970 Knicks-Lakers finals. I remember watching him sink that full court shot to send game 3 or 4 into overtime and wanting to be cool like that.

great player...rip

RIP The Logo
I only know him as the smartest player evaluator of his time. Unreal draft record.

A great series for generating a first memory. This may be when the NBA reached its peak.

Noam Chomsky died. He was a famous linguist.

Noam Chomsky at 95. Famous linguist but perhaps better known for his political stances these days.

Apparently, at least according to his wife, Chomsky hasn't died yet.

Say hey! RIP Willie Mays. If you never saw him play, you missed pure beauty.

RIP Willie Mays. One of the absolute best ever. The definition of a 5 tool player. Say Hey!

He always did kinda overshadow Hank. I used to love those NL all-star teams with an outfiled of Mays, Aaron and Clemente.

The Red Sox had the opportunity to sign Mays. Instead, they were the last team to sign a Blank player, Pumpsie Green.

Maybe the greatest player of the modern era.

Anouk Aimee, star of A Man and A Woman, who also appeared in La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2.

You can watch A Man and A Woman on Kanopy now.

Maybe the greatest player of the modern era.

Whenever I had the chance to watch Mays play at the ballpark I would make it a point to watch him fly out. Other players would be called out on a fly ball when they approached 2nd base. Willie would be in front of the shortstop.

In for my semi-annual, "I thought he had died years ago."

Six people have called out of the blue today, wanting to talk about Willie. All guys in their 70s.
