Modern horror movies thread
I'm a pretty big movie buff and I'm really into horror movies. Though classics are great I love modern horror movies the most, pretty much anything past 2000 I consider to be modern.
To give you guys an idea of the types of horror movies I like here are some off the top of my head
the grudge 1 and 2 (american versions)
the ring
insidious
dead silence
texas chainsaw massacre 1 and 2
paranormal activity (all)
the conjuring
annabelle
dark skies
nothing to fear
scream (all)
the amityville horror
american psycho (made in the year 2000 so it qualifies)
american psycho 2 (kind of comical but mila kunis is hot af so idc)
final destination (all)
the happening
1408
saw 1 (the rest are meh)
hills have eyes (2nd one is ****)
exorcism of emily rose
dark water (jennifer connelly ♥)
dawn of the dead
k so yea this was a quick mashup of the ones I could think of atm. These are in no specific sequence and they are not all great but I found all of them entertaining. There are definitely a ton of good ones I missed but yea this is just to give you guys an idea about my taste.
As you can see I'm not a huge fan of slasher movies though hostel 1 and 2 were alright I guess, I hate movies like human centipede and tusk as they are just gross and retarded and have no storyline.
Anyways this thread is open to all modern horror movie discussion, reviews, suggestions, news, whatever. Feel free to mention classics also, I don't mind.
Loved Doctor Sleep...can't wait for the new Salem's Lot
Doctor Sleep was a remarkable sequel to both book and Kubrick's version, and the synthesis of them worked.
Yep. It's the most messed up Horror I've seen since A Serbian Film and legit contender for best of the year. I thought I was past being disturbed at this point, until The Substance said "Hold my beer".
I gotta say I found it pretty meh overall and you can see the studio interference as it comes across as having chunks missing from it. Has one or two nice scenes and is shot very well but other than that it just comes across as bland, really.
The Speak No Evil remake is solid enough btw and I personally preferred it to the original. I highly recommend The Substance, although it may not work for some. Its third act is utterly demented.
Saw The Substance last night. I don't even want to talk about it cos I don't want to spoil it for people. It was an exploitation movie dressed up as arthouse, but in a great way. The director clearly loves Kubrick btw. So I'll summarise:
It was gross. I loved it.
And with slight spoilers....

IÂ’m biased but itÂ’s a very underrated achievement imo. The book is deeply flawed and virtually unadaptable for the screen as written. And then it also has to work with an iconic movie that differs markedly from the source text. And both King and KubrickÂ’s estate signed off on it. Very high degree of difficulty.
Too bad it didnÂ’t do better at the box office or we mightÂ’ve gotten a prequel about Dick Halloran.

Subtle homages to
Terrifier 3 isn’t quite the banger that Terrifier 2 was but it’s still a damn good slasher. I think Art the Clown belongs on the slasher Rushmore already. He’s that iconic.

Saw this on the weekend. My criticism sure it was pretty good especially since I have just picked up the franchise not having watched the first two (I did this because of the IMDB rating of 7) but how the hell does that clown not get challenged before the final scene? I get that he has to make it but how does he at least avoid a beating. That whole bar scene too - come on I won't spoil it but for him to pull that out of his bag of tricks. Just hand him the suit next time.
I just want to say for a sequel Smile 2 was very good. We have lots of singing pop girl horror films of late (Trap, The Substance) but this certainly was on the side of the Substance as very well done. The opening scene with the one camera shot panning across was terrific. Would recommend.

He’s supernatural. Hard for unsuspecting mortals to challenge him much. The bar scene was amazing and him pulling that out of his bag of tricks is part of his schtick. No slashers do that, but Art does. In every movie.
I’m stoked for Smile 2. The first one really surprised me. I thought it was going to suck. I’ve heard Smile 2 is even better.

A friend saw an early preview of Smile 2 and said quite a few people booed at the ending. She didn't think the ending was bad though.

The very end was fine I guess. How they got there in the last few minutes of the movie sucked though and was my only criticism of the movie. Other than that, Smile 2 far exceeded my expectations and was genuinely creepy throughout.

I didn't like the ending of the first one either, but it was the typical horror movie thing that people are only in danger because they're too stupid to figure out the easy way to defeat the evil.
Loved the first one but that ending did suck

I think it needs to go in a whole new direction Smile 3 even though Smile 2 was clearly an upgrade on Smile. Smile 2 is probably as good as it is going to get with riding on the back of the plot of Smile.
Here is the short film / concept video which is kind of Smile 0, prequel to Smile.
It's only 11 minutes long, and for me it was interrupted for commercials twice which was extremely annoying and pretty much ruins the atmosphere, but it's the only complete version I could find online.
If anyone has a better link please share it.
