Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Just saw Sinners - first half very good. The music and the singing. The acting was very good but the last act certainly let the movie down. Felt rushed and some unnecessary parts. Probably also could have gone in a different direction with the main antithesis of the film.
Havoc (2025)
Tom Hardy's burnt out corrupt cop (with a heart, natch) has to trawl through the underworld to save corrupt politician Forest Whitaker's son, while avoiding his fellow corrupt cops led by Timothy Olyphant, in this messy and rather chaotic flick, with a wafer thin plot and an over abundance of CGI. That said it does deliver in the hard action/ultraviolence. It's not a patch on director Gareth Evans' previous jaw droppingly kickass The Raid Films, or his sophomore effort Merantau, but is overall an adequate time filler with some legit impressive individual scenes.
Don't bother with Havoc. Even the action got boring. I think every actor got exactly 1 chance to speechify, but the writing was cutting room floor quality.
I think it is rentable for $6 or $7 now on Apple or Amazon or Fandango. It should be more accessible in a few weeks on other streaming services. I confess that I found it on an "alternative" site which requires some extra effort to use and to stream to your TV.

I'm still working on this. I got hung up on the grilled cheese sandwich with a side of imaginary tomato soup and went off on a tangent.

Yup…. I was about 1/3 of the way through it before I saw that post and figured I should just finish it and be done. The fight choreography in the club was good but anything involving guns was goofy. As was the rest.
Not really. It is mainly seen through a typical liberal academics prism - which I also studied in - and not really accessible for your common movie-goer. Which is fine. And something I accepted years ago. But let's be honest about the nature of this thread.

One of the biggest lulz in the absolute must read oral history Alright Alright Alright is how Milla and whatshisname were supposed to be the big breakout stars and they pissed Linklater off so much he cut as much of their screen time as he could. Set her back quite a bit and smothered his career in the crib, though at least he got to shag her a bunch irl for a couple years.

I think of having 'Good Taste' is having a level of sophistication, education and experience.I dont think it is really possible to just 'buy' your way into having good taste... that description is just a cultural appropriation. 'Good Taste' is independent of financial wherewithal Good taste is an appreciation for the finer details thru comprehension and experiential perspective
Fair points. And I mostly agree. On the last paragraph though (even if it was a digression/a generic example) : knowledge is not always linear (and definitely rarely absolute), so judging someone else as "lesser", definitely stems from arrogance (which itself almost always stems from insecurity).

I just learned that the "joke" sponsor of the Bad News Bears baseball team - Chico's Bail Bonds - was an actual bail bondsman and paid to have his company name on the fake movie little leaguer's uniforms.
Last weekend I watched:
Zones of Interest. I thought it was very interesting. Almost like the definition of being a fly on the wall. So detached. Not among my favorite movies, but I'm glad I watched it. I don't remember watching something like it before.
Gattaca. One of my favorite science fiction movies and I wanted to show it to my daughter now that she's old enough to "get it" (she's 10). It had some cheesy scenes, but overall I think it holds up quite well.
Ex machina. I hadn't seen the movie since it came out in 2014. I liked it a lot. The tension is strong throughout the movie.

Schnabel's assembly of actors and his portrayal of Jean Michel is outstanding.

One of the very few movies where I went in with super high expectations from trailer, reviews & word of mouth, and it actually might’ve exceeded them.
Mystic River didn’t get there. The reviews were just so over the top, especially from Stephen King, who had an EW column at the time. It’s aged extremely well—it’s far better than Unforgiven in Clint’s oeuvre, which would just have be Pale Rider 2 without Hackman—but I still think Gone Baby Gone is better.
Conclave looks great, very dramatic. The Catholics come with awesome costumes, stunning sets etc., all skillfully presented. But very little interest in spiritual matters is shown here, just the intrigue of who will be chosen run this huge powerful worldly institution. Zomg the black guy? the mean conservative? the kind liberal? It does care about politics, the very best kind even, so there's that. And this Berger guy definitely knows how to make a movie. But it all strikes me as an empty exercise in art.
Regarding movie "snobby' level talk, I appreciate the group. I hate when directors break the fourth wall and unwittingly force me into being a Turing Test subject.
What can I say, it's about the same as being forced into the life of a mouse caught in a maze of horror while holdup in a haunted Hotel up high on a snow covered mountain.
I kind of agree with both sides since this thread is fairly liberal and academic, which I appreciate, but I do not find it snobby. It’s always felt welcoming to any reasonable perspective or movie.
Maybe an appropriate time to review Amelie which I’ve been trying to track down for 25 years. It felt a bit pretentious for the first half, but the ending was strong and largely denounced the things that annoyed me about the main character. It was charming and fresh, probably especially so at the time. I was hoping to love it, but I’ll settle for liking it.
