Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Seems like a good time to say I thought Sinners was just alright. It combined several genres (too many?) competently but nothing really impressed me beyond the big musical number. Agree with both. My expectations were sky high for Weapons and it didn't come close to the hype. It was way overhyped. Loved American Fiction.
Going to see One Battle After Another this weekend. Hope it delivers.
so....I was today years old when I realized that actresses Regina Hall and Regina King are NOT the same person.
Always wondered how she could be so prolific.

You know for the Rapture you could watch The Rapture. It's pretty good.

"X movie is overhyped," is not film criticism. It tells me nothing about why you disliked it. All it tells me is that you did not like it, you're missing the WHY." Tell me you didn't like Brolin's performance, tell me you thought it was a Magnolia wannabe, tell me you thought the middle part dragged. Even, "Not quite my tempo" is more valuable than "Everyone else liked it, I didn't."
I stand by my point that it relates to a movie's budget. Ppl seem to reserve it for smaller-mid budget films as if there's some kind of balance required to knock it down a peg. That's how it comes off.
You know for the Rapture you could watch The Rapture. It's pretty good.

Due to health/mobility issues I haven’t been ante to see a theatrical movie since Civil War. I may make the journey out for the new PTA. Would feel like a crime to wait for VOD.

Not every post itt has to be some long-winded critique. In case you missed it, I was agreeing with another poster who said the movie was underwhelming and the payoff sucked. I could list a bunch of stuff I didn't like about it, but I don't owe you anything.

As for the budget thing...complete nonsense. I didn't even know what the movie's budget was, nor do I care. That has literally zero bearing on whether I like a movie or not.
Bill Lee in his prime could pitch a shutout and give up a dozen hits. He referred to his manager Don Zimmer as "the gerbil." They did not get along too well.

Heck, I think One Battle’s overhyped—Slate called it the MOTY—and its budget is through the roof.
Sinners & Ex Machina both met if not exceeded sky high expectations. Mystic River & Under The Skin did not; I thought the former was really good but not as good as Gone Baby Gone and certainly not “the best movie of the last 30 years” per Stephen King’s EW column, and Skin was beautifully shot but meh otherwise—hey, a small budget independent horror film.
Watching a bunch of Redford movies since his death. I think I'm more of a Newman fan. Redford holds the screen, but Newman is always more interesting.
Someone needs to make another Color of money, this time with Vince as the Old pool hustler. Cruise should make this happen. If he ever accepted growing old.

I do want to rewatch All is Lost, along with a lot of Redford stuff. Already went through a bit of a Hackman rewatch.
Didn't expect my negative review of Weapons to butterfly effect. I can't say any of the performances stood out to me. Maybe I'm just getting older, but particularly this style of absurdist and almost parody horror doesn't land for me. It also could be how I'm consuming film lately, which is at home feeding a baby with the sun still shining out, but it just did not do anything for me. Am I supposed to laugh, cringe, shriek, be scared? When I'm confused as to what my reaction is the movie has failed me.
The latest Black Phone 2 trailer appears to go full Elm St. when Gwen or Finney are fighting Grabby and others walk in it looks like they’re rolling around by themselves, sigh.
Stephen King also tweeted out that it’s better than the original which is a really bad sign.
I bought All Is Lost for friends some years back, when they were retiring to live on their boat (which they did for several years before coming onshore again).
I enjoyed the movie a great deal, they said the movie didn't depict how real-life emergencies would be handled.
Unfortunately, it was too long ago for me to remember what specifically they disagreed with.
