Music: What are you listening to today?
In the spirit of the books and movies threads, here's one to talk about what you're listening to lately and what you hav
replicating 'art' as if created by a human without immediately disclosing it as such is wrong
Every artist builds on those who've come before though - and they don't necessarily credit every influence they've had. Also, much of the popular music today is produced by a team of highly skilled technicians using pretty much the same skills that computers do.
AI is trained on what humans have created and perfected, but isn't that really the case for most, if not all, popular music?
I feel kinda uncomfortable discussing this issue because I see the arguments against AI and I feel that instinctively I should be against it, but then again once machines can do stuff as good, or better, than humans, what are we really arguing against?
Take the two songs linked above (pretty much tailored towards my musical taste as defined by youtube, so I'm admittedly biased) - if my google search revealed that they were by an actual human I'd have no reservations against calling them great.
Now I do have those reservations, but I can't really justify it.
I'm old and I grew up playing and loving chess. Back when they started, computers couldn't even beat amateurs at chess. Then they "learned" and got better - still everyone was saying they'd never be able to be actually good at chess because calculations and computations couldn't match how humans "felt" and "imagined" chess. The argument was that humans had "something" that machines could never replicate.
Now, not only can computers run circles around even the best players mankind can produce, but they do so both elegantly and beautifully. Morphy has nothing on even a mediocre chess-engine these days.
One can argue about how close current AI is to that level musically, but it's getting there. And I think that is is an area, like chess, where we're just a bit of time away to having to admit that computers can do this just as good, or even better, than humans.
I fear we're way more predictable and programmed than we like to think we are.
I'm a high school teacher, so today I substituted for my History colleague. Let the students listen to my top2 favorite band of all time, Sabaton.
Highly recommended if you're into power metal and/or history.

I like this setup better. When he was in the food truck I kept expecting Kaneshiro Takeshi to start selling ice cream.
And this confirms my strongly held personal belief that while American music is based on steam engines, Brazilian music is based on bird calls.
Obviously the world is going to hell in a handbasket currently, but these days are all we have so I'm desperately clinging to the hope that they are actually better.
They're not, but... it's still real to me, dammit!
