Galway

Galway

Will be in Ireland for ~1week end of August. Have been 2x but never been to Galway at all

Train from Dublin best bet?

Will do normal tourist stuff...day trip to Connemara? Cliffs of Moher (went once in a monsoon), etc

Is Galway City Centre the best spot to stay? Any other can't miss places? Thinking 3 nights should be plenty over there and then move back to the east.

Thanks.

Was there in October for a couple nights. City Centre seemed pretty convenient for going out at night. Salthill also looks like it could be a nice area to stay, esp in the summer with the promenade and a diving platform I think. Enjoyed the cocktails at Galway City Distillery even though we were the only two people in there on a Wed night. Unfortunately looks like it may be temporarily closed right now. Didn't make it to Connemara, but heard good things.

If you like Irish traditional music, make it to The Crane Bar. Galway City Centre has most of the Slim approved hotels. Train is fine, but rental car offers more side trip options, and is only 2 hours from Dublin to Galway. If you drive, Sean's Bar in Athlone (about half way) is the oldest pub in Ireland (1K years), and worth a stop. The drive from Galway down the coast to the Cliffs of Moher is beautiful.

Connemara sounds like a solid day trip, and Cliffs of Moher are always a classic, but maybe check the weather first.
