online pros living in Vietnam thread
I'm an online pro living in HCMC, Vietnam (district 2) and interested in starting a thread for those of us living here to exchange information and avoid duplication of effort in getting addresses changed with poker sites, banking, and advice in general about living here. Also possibly meet up for beers or dinner on occasion.
About myself, I'm an online limit pro from the US that moved here in January of this year after a year+ living in Buenos Aires.
My specific questions - what are the chances of successfully receiving checks by mail or courier here?
Who do you bank with? Those of you that have received transfers from poker sites to a bank in Vietnam, are there any problems? Does the bank/government require to show you a work contract or where the funds are coming from? Are transfers subject to Vietnamese tax?
I opened a bank account with ANZ with just my passport. I tried HSBC at first and they told me I need a Vietnamese ID card which I don't have. HSBC also had an $8000US limit on how much I could have in my account at anytime and told me I'd need to show a work contract for some types of deposits/transfers.
ANZ told me I there were no limits on the amount of money I could have in my account. And they didn't mention the need to show a work contract (which doesn't mean they won't be required at some point).
For those of you not doing money transfers, how are you getting your money here?
Also, it looks like my bank account which is in US dollars is of no use as it looks like the poker sites require transfers to bank accounts here be in Euros. So, it looks like I'm going to have to close my US dollar account and open a Euro account and a VND account.
I haven't played since April 15th. Stars has been extremely difficult, unreasonable, illogical and incompetent in getting my mailing address changed - but I'm praying I might get final approval this week and can hopefully start working again.

My friend moved to Da Nang and will stay there for a while. He needs to find a way to get USDT into dong consistently. Any idea what's the best way to do that?
He opened a bank account and wanted to do P2P on Binance, is that an option?
Any help is appreciated.
Had a currency exchange shop on My Khe Beach earlier this year who was doing usdt exchange for super small fees run by a Vietnamese dude. I did a few exchanges with him outside the shop opening hours and the Vietnamese dude would come in my lobby building and we would do the exchange there, no extra fees. His shop closed now but he told me that he was planning to close it soon and that if I wanted he would come to Starbucks or lobby entrance building to do exchanges if I needed it. I still have his number I can pm it to you if you want. But if your friend has a local bank account I would probably stick with p2p exchanges like Binance, Kucoin or Localcoinswap, more security than exchanging IRL. Depending on the country you can find some traders offering super low fees for usdt/btc to bank. But be aware that if a Vietnamese are sending you money you might have problems with your local bank once you receive it, that's communism for you. I had this problem years ago with my ex gf and my bank sent back the vnd to my ex gf after asking me why and proof of legit business transaction etc. Not sure how this gonna work with crypto there. If international traders no problem but local ones might be problematic if you are a foreigner.
Just checked on Google maps searching for currency exchange usdt and there is a new one offering usdt for vnd exchange.
An other possibility you can check in the Chinese community there if some shops offer crypto exchange, there are the ones doing all the crypto exchanges in Phnom Penh for ex from currency exchange shops to noodles restaurants to clothes/watches shops
"Kim My Kim" is still at An Thuong, just moved to a new building on the same street. Seems disapperad from google maps. They are next to Tingting fresh juice on Le Lo street.
Usually usdt sells higher on p2p.binance than usd sells at a goldshop, which might make you think their fee is smaller than it is.
He went to this one and exchanged at the same rate that xe was displaying so thanks a lot for the info!
Uhh I booked a flight to Hanoi for Sunday as I'd need to do a visa run and completely forgot about the typhoon and flooding, does it make any sense to stay a few nights right now or should I just stay close to the airport and take the next flight back?

Fyi Danang sucks during winter, especially November, while it's the best time for Saigon-Bangkok latitute.
Hi I m going to move to Vietnam this coming month, I will play mainly online but I wanted to mix some live cash too
I would prefer to avoid Playing iligal games
Anyone can suggest me the best option for me?
I haven't played there since before covid, but all of the games were in a legal gray zone then. It's probably still the same now. My impression at the time was that they are likely bribing officials to stay open, but if for any reason someone with any power wanted to shut them down it would be very easy to say they are breaking the law.
Yeah nothing has changed AFAIK. Simply put there are no legal cash games, but they get away with it by bribing the popo, same as in neighboring countries. Tournies appear to be legal and are openly advertised. But not a lot running at meaningful stakes. Often the CG are right next to the tournies, usually there is some lame attempt to separate the areas. Also, they would mostly charge a % of your entry instead of rake, but that might depend on the place. In any case, don't run into a viet cop with poker-related stories, that might not end well for you.
Hi, strongly considering spending 4-5 days in Hanoi from November 27th.
Few questions for locals or expats more familair:
1)Transportaion options?
2)Most purchases like grocerices or restauraunts are cash?Unlikley contactless spots right?
3)Best Poker Venues for MTTs/CGs?
4)Best area of the city to live
5) How safe is it for foreignhers?
Anyone wanna meet for some dinner/drinks?
Use Grab app for bike/car, no tuktuks.
Mini-marts and some restaurants you can pay by foreign card but not contactless. Definetely need to carry cash.
Imo first time tourist should stay around Hoan Kiem lake/district. North side of the lake is called Old Quarter, you can stroll around, bars and cafes, lively walkable area. Lake is nice for a walk too.
Tay Ho district is more popular with expats, for long term staying.
Take care crossing the road, it's basically frogger. Use a local as human shield.
Thanks for the information. Really appreachite it.
Haha. love the advice anout using a human as a shield. I'm farmilair with Indonesia and Phillipines and image it being similair or wosre haha
It's def worse than Philippines. Well Manila is prolly worse when it comes to the time it takes to get from A to B but at least they have some working traffic lights and peeps who tend to follow them. In VN it's moar like 100m scooters and survival of teh fittest. Crossing a main road is def not recommended, it's a gamble.
