New York City Area Hype Discussion
Did a quick check but apologies if this already exists, also might be a little premature either way but- given the movement towards online sports betting getting the nod, and the prospect of downstate casinos looming on the horizon would it make sense to create this thread for news on these potential future games?
What prompted me to make thread is the Ignition move out of NY- does this mean licensed regulated sites are on the way sooner rather than later?
What's the rake at the first round of commercial rooms upstate?
Is it not set by the state like in NJ?

Rivers Schenectady, Resorts World Catskills, and Turning Stone all have different rake (Rivers having a particularly unique staggered structure). Plus I haven’t seen any language that suggest uniform rake across the stake.
I just can’t imagine , particularly from MGM, they don’t go with very high rake, for all the same reasons we’re excited for the rooms. High traffic rooms in one of the wealthiest areas in the world with some of the wealthiest tourists and business travelers in the world
Hochul has until the end of the year to sign (or not) the 800+ bills the legislature has passed this session.
It sets the application deadline at 8/31/25. Then the community advisory committee for each has to be established within 30 days, and has 120 days from establishment to approve or not.
12/31/25 (with a possible 30-day extension) is the deadline for the location board to recommend winners to the gaming commission, which then has 30 days (with a possible 30-day extension) to grant the lice
Way back when over 700 posts ago I took the over on all the estimates. Someone else suggested 2025. I agreed that was as earliest would happen. Wheels turn incredibly slow in NYC.
question for you new york guys and gals,
are you at all concerned about companies like Wynn (and to some extent MGM) running poker in NYC?
Its pretty clear from my experience in Massachusetts that these companies do not care one bit about poker, poker players. I can't imagine the rake being any better if not worse than Mass and its pretty clear when there isn't clear competition (like Vegas) its going to be a shitshow for the poker community.
IMO one of the worst things to happen to New England P
The problem is, we don't really have a choice. If you think the rake is bad at Encore, let me take you to an underground room in NYC. $20 is low.
Something is better than nothing [emoji2369]
Shae is well separated from residential areas with major highways on every side of it. It's not like a gambler can walk to someone's house from the casino, it's impossible unless you run across an 8 lane highway.
If by " Shae" you mean Citi Field this isn't true at all. I've gone to Mets games where I park a 10-15 min walk away in residential neighborhood without going near a highway.

Rake will definitely be high.
But think about the effective rake NYers are paying now in gas tolls and hotel rooms to play poker.
there's an underground club 10 min away from me where they rake $30+$5 per hand from $1/$3NL and $5 button PLO game
the place is packed every night with sometimes 3 tables going on
the rake will probably be the highest in the country and no one will care
Honestly if the rake is anywhere between $6 - $10(not counting bonus rake), I’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Feel that unlike Encore Boston there will be competition so wouldn't be massively surprised if it wasn't $10+.
In Chicagoland there are a few rooms and the highest is actually the one furthest from the city (GVC - $7+1, maybe $7+2).

$30? Or you mean up to $30?
And i agree if its the highest in the country nobody will care. Might have to play higher stakes to make it more worth the while

NY has machines that aren't even legal in most states and a sky high gambling tax. Id be shocked if rake is less than 10 a hand.

Raises another question, what stakes will time start at and what will time be? If rake is 10% with $10+ cap, who’s to say they won’t make 5/10 a rake game, or make time $20/hh?
First website update in ages...board meeting Thursday 6/27.

One of the agenda items is revising the RFA adding dates to the timeline:
• applications due 6/30/25
• CAC deadline 9/30/25
• recommendations to commission 12/1/25
• "Commission licensure consideration" 12/31/25
I guess that means Hochul has signed, or they're assuming she will. Or they just want the appearance that they're doing something. There doesn't appear to be anything about answering the second round of questions that they've been sitting on for eight months.
What a joke this state is. Only 18 months away from considering giving someone a license, then another year or two for an official opening/re-opening. Can we just assume at least by 2030 there might be table games in down state NY (and hope it includes poker)?
I’m still holding out hope that cards can hit the air summer 2026, and that it’s a near lock at least RW has poker. I have no logical defense for my hope.
Also holding out maybe panic about delayed/lost revenue from congestion pricing pushes this and the online process along but you know, probably not lol

The eventual licensees will be required (by the authorizing law) to begin gaming operations within two years of licensing. Which I imagine will be problematic for all of the bids that involve building something from scratch. (And doubly so for the Wynn proposal, which would stand on a deck over the rail yards that doesn't exist yet.)

Can they do something like what Bally's has done in Chicago and set up a "temporary casino" while the full one is being built? Would that work as a loophole here?

I'd guess they would have to. It just says they have to begin operations, not that construction has to be finished. Otherwise they'd have to get the legislature to pass an extension. And why not get some money coming in sooner rather than later.
From the Gaming board...
"The Board approved amendments to the RFA’s schedule at yesterday’s public meeting:
• Applications will be due June 27, 2025. Community Advisory Committees (CACs) will form immediately thereafter and commence their statutory work.
• CACs must vote on their respective project by September 30, 2025. Those Applicants approved by their CAC will then submit supplemental application material – including a proposed tax rate – to the Board for evaluation and consideration.
• The Board expects to make decisions by December 1, 2025, followed by Commission licensure by December 31, 2025. This ensures that New York State will collect the already-booked casino license fee(s) ahead of schedule."
So essentially 2026 until licenses are granted (minimum)
Blah
You have to love that line “the board expects to …”. So really the board could delay well beyond Dec 2025.
Yea that too, could be 2028 lol
