English Premier League 2023-24 Thread
2022-2023 Saw Manchester City’s Death Star become fully operational winning the Premier League with 89 points by e
the goalkeeper has got footballing pie all over his face
my favorite yellows are when the players are very obviously in the right.
Trossard!!!
We're so back
I was cautiously optimistic about this game.
Arsenal play better vs "good teams" than bus parking teams.
Poorest we've been in a longtime. Shouldn't have really been close. Need to win the next 3 before the city game or it's trouble.
When is Salah back?
League cup final probably.
Scoreline very flattering for liverpool
It wasn’t long ago when I prayed I’d see the day where we could hang with Liverpool. We did that at Anfield and then completely dominated them today. Man I am happy.
3.76 vs 0.41 xG
Missed a couple sitters too. Odegaard played some great passes.
Here’s another quibble with xG
I’m assuming it’s quite high for the lol Havertz chance that was tapped in by Saka. So you get two high xG on one chance and one goal scored bc Havertz is a donkey. Not truly reflective of two chances created.
We were piss poor so this is not to say we were unlucky or Arsenal were deserved winners. There’s just so many flaws with xG
I agree.
Though Havertz played a good game otherwise.

Yes, most public facing xg going to overrate arsenals xG if they dont correctly handle attacking sequences (which should be done by either using just the best chance, or conditional probability). Don't blame xG for people modeling it badly. Aside from that they are counting havertz chance which was flagged offside after. They didnt restart with a free kick which is stupid but that can be a harder situation to handle since if it doesn't go to var theres no way to know for sure (in this case i think it was obv offside). The correct and accurate xG is likely somewhere closer to 3.0, which I mean is still a paddling.
The bigger take from this game, as well as the series of games against liverpool is their attack was completely stymied and liverpool created almost nothing across those games besides 1 big chance from an arsenal defensive error (the trent breakaway miss), and a garbage time goal in the fa cup game to go 2-0.
Arsenal are responsible for 50% of the games liverpool created 1xg or less in all comps. The other 3 were a dead rubber last group game in europa league vs union sg, Away at city, and down a man vs newcastle.
Liverpools attack is really really good, and arsenal made them look completely pedestrian in multiple games. Arsenals defense this year is basically the best defense in the xG era in the PL outside of peps city teams. If arsenals attack really is starting to click (theyve been the best attack in the league since jesus returned in november) they are going to mollywhop some more good teams in the same way city has done over the years.
(saka's chance was .44 after havertz shot, and the havertz offside volley was .13 so chop .57 off most totals you see for arsenal to give you the "true" total).
here's caleys xg chart who i do know controls for attacking sequences:
Liverpool were without Salah and a fully fit Nunez though. Makes a big difference.
Arsenal are legit extremely good defensively though. Halland was fit last time we played City, Saliba and Gabriel held him to 0 shots.
Creativity in the midfield and finishing is our weakness. I think we are an elite striker away from dominating the league.

I'm not crazy for thinking Jesus is the best striker in the league after Haaland right?
Top class ball control, dribbling, link-up play, defensive work-rate from the front, and is sneakily good in the air for being a small lad.
lol jesus
No question Arse have a good defence, but so have lots of teams who finished top 4 in the last 10 years.
There's only 1 elite striker in the PL right now. Salah and Son are elite players but not strikers. Though I do think Darwin Nunez is close to being elite, he's been unlucky with how many times he's hit the post.
I was praising Jesus' all-around game, not his finishing. Anyone who watches Arsenal can see that the team as a whole creates more and better chances with Jesus at ST (vs Nketiah or Havertz). I don't see how this is controversial at all. In the 2-1 win vs Nottingham last week Jesus was largely responsible for both goals.
