Someone who’s a gambling degenerate is not going to defer 68 million of his salary each season.
Ohtani’s only potential problem is if he knowingly paid Ippei’s gambling debt. From what I’m hearing that’s a potential crime.

Okay, I see. Maddux's teams were winning at right at 60% and Ryan's right at 50%, yet Maddux was considerably higher over his team's winning % than Ryan. Case closed. Ryan got jobbed out of a bunch of wins, but it doesn't lift him that high. His first three years with the Rangers, age 42-44 his disparity on that ballooned north of Maddux overall Atlanta stint, but that's kind of cherry picking. WAR still well south of Maddux, of course. It is notable that age 44, Ryan's hits/9 went microscopic again, back to where it was in his mid 20's, a world record 5.3 for starters. The Angels back in the day were winning about 46% of their games without Ryan, 53% with him. That's great but Maddux greater on that stat too.
I started on this reacting to too big a diss on Ryan about not being a winner. BS. He won 324 games for teams the vast majority of which were not playoff teams, whereas the comparison with Maddux and Clemens is unbalanced there. Ryan was in the rotation for 4 playoff teams, Maddux 13, Clemens 12.
Put him in. WTF? I don't care if Bart Giammati got butt hurt and thinks he's important to the game. What an interview!

I get that the O's management have to do it and the MLBPA sucks for allowing it, but it is a huge diss to the fans holding Holliday back from opening day roster.

The Texas Rangers top prospect hit his sixth home run in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Cincinnati Reds at Goodyear Ballpark.
He's joined a very select company. Langford is the sixth player, aged 22 or younger, to hit at least six spring training homers since numbers were first officially tracked in 2006, according to FanGraphs. Langford leads all Cactus League batters with six homers and leads all major leaguers with 19 RBI and a 1.228 OPS.

1. He has access to Shohei's bank accounts and was funding his bets through that.
2. He tells the bookie, "I'm Shohei's interpreter. He wants to make some bets." And then the bookie offers a line of credit. Then months go by and the bookie is like "When are you gonna pay me?" He pays him. Shohei might have offered to help or Ippei legit stole the money to pay.
3. Shohei wanted to get in some sweet, sweet NFL parlays and Ippei was his runner.

The bold is possible for sure. Even though we finally have a story that "works", it may very well not be the truth, or not the full truth.
If Ohtani was not involved though, what I doubt is that 4.5M is the final figure. The interpreter may have started off smaller with his own $$, then stole 100K or so from Ohtani to cover that, then got in deeper, and took more money, and then started chasing losses. All the time claiming to the bookie he was making bets for Ohtani. Would explain the apparent line of credit..
Worse case is that he actually was making bets for Ohtani.
For me, the big problem believing Ohtani's side of things means that Ohtani did not notice 4.5M in withdrawals, or whoever managed Ohtani's financial affairs did not???? These are both tough things to believe right now. It will be interesting to see how this gets explained.

I get why he's not signed & why he gets hate.
I'm struggling more so why he's not signed and getting the hate when the opposite is true of guys like Chapman, German, and Ozuna.
Is the majority of the difference in treatment just his outspokenness/personality?
The optics are way easier to sweep under the rug with the aforementioned than bauer

Yeah I was a bauer fan from the driveline days. And doubled down after stickygate.

I admit to not being totally up to date on everything he did but he liked to do some really sick **** in the bedroom that likely was consensual and hasn't been convicted of any crime? I'm with you on not understanding why he's blacklisted from baseball when there are some terrible people playing and excelling not just in baseball but in all the major sports.

I think MLB would handle the Chapman situation differently today then they did when he was the first (?) player to be suspended under the domestic violence policy.
He reacted in the exact opposite of Bauer by just STFU and let the lawyers handle it. Served his suspension, had no charges filed and a year later actually was naturalized as a US citizen.
That's the problem in general with domestic violence situations where the guilty party is rich. Makes just way too much financial sense for the other party not to press charges.
How did Bauer react? Did he ever go to trial?
