the difference between having an average goalie and a bad one. i think the goal was the panthers only good scoring chance in the entire period. you had one job, begging you to make a single goddamn save. *sigh*
and completely preventable, just a lazy bonehead play by mcdavid for a second, and that's all it takes

Wonder if his thoughts have changed after tonight…didn’t watch very much at all, but the shots say Florida was outplayed by a nice margin. I’ll accept Bob stealing one and shutting them out is a nice little mental bonus too.
People who watched, what did we think of the game?
1) Will Skinner play well - NO
2) Will the refs call penalties to the point that each team has 3-4 PP/game - YES
3) Will Nurse-Ceci pairing hold up - NO
If 1/3 are "yes", it'll take a supernova McDavid/Draisaitl for us to win - IT WAS NOT
Will add one more factor:
4) Did Bobrovsky turn into prime Hasek? - YES
Loss in game one.
Think you have to chalk that one up to being goalie'd (on both sides of the puck). Not sure the Oilers should change one single thing, and despite being unhappy about the loss, the game still gives every indication the Oilers are the better team.
I don’t think you’ll see the Oilers having that great a shot discrepancy again. You might still see Skinner being the pumpkin that his career tells you he is.

all xg: 66% oilers (3.66 expected goals for)
cliffs: the oilers came out flying with an 80% xg 1st period, and had a 1.52 xg 2nd period, but they just couldn't beat bob. the panthers on the other hand were able to turn 1.85 expected goals into 2 actual ones on the scoreboard because they were shooting on iforgethisfirstnameiwanttosayjeffbutiknowitsnotjeff skinner. who cares, he doesn't desrves a first name today.
best oilers 5v5 xg: henrique 84%, foegele 84%, janmark 77%, brown 76%, bouchard 75%
worst oilers 5v5 xg: kulak 27%, perry 36%, nugent-hopkins 48%, broberg 53%, mcdavid 54%
kulak bringing up the rear today, which is rough considering that both ceci and broberg were in the lineup. kulak had the most xg against among edm blueliners today, but the most among all skaters was, wait for it ... connor mcdavid. yes, it wasn't just the 1st goal, that was kind of his fault (seeing it again on the highlights, both he and hyman also stopped skating on the backcheck, inexcusable), but overall the panthers generated more 5v5 offense vs mcbust than anyone else. obviously he also generated a lot of offense, but the lack of defensive effort was enough to land him as a bottom-5 player today.
also, nuge continues to suck, and corey perry continues to be one of the least useful humans on earth. and evan bouchard is annoyingly good, he should totally leave town asap. oilers wasted a great game from their depth forwards, and a not horrible game from ceci & nurse, though they were on the ice for both 5v5 goals against.
best panthers 5v5 xg: luostarinen 81%, tarasenko 78%, lundell 72%, forsling 53%, ekblad 50%
worst panthers 5v5 xg: lorentz 13%, stenlund 15%, kulikov 19%, okposo 21%, ekman-larsson 23%
panthers had a lot of guys who didn't show up today, basically only the top5 + bob did, and unsurprisingly their end of roster plugs were the worst of them today. maurice smartly limited their ice time, might wanna go even further with it though, because lorentz and stenlund in particular seem super useless. somebody tell maurice that lomberg is better than everyone on his 4th line.
the panthers big line today created a few chances, and conceded almost nothing, so big ups to them. and while the oilers got some offense against ekblad/forsling, they countered with some of their own. unlike mikkola/montour, who did not. and the kulikov/oel 3rd pairing got destroyed.

it was an interesting watch - especially the current day interviews with people who were involved in various roles and how their lives were affected afterwards. I had forgotten just exactly how much property damage was done.
