crazy thing is i remember all the hype about ml and how everyone thought that they'd be far more productive and could then just babysit/maintain what they'd written without understanding that it takes far less engineers to babysit than it does to build and actively manage

Theres one aria reg i recognize who always has the headphones on and a movie on their ipad in front of them, i think they are a 2-5 reg maybe a 1-2 reg, they are bald and remind me alot of rice, looks like he could possibly also live in his car. I played with them once years ago at 2-5 and then they opened a 5-10 i went to play and i heard him look at it and say "looks like all pros" and then went back to play 2-5, was a great game. Thats my only interaction with him ever but see him from time to time.

If i was staking someone for 1-2 and 2-5 and they wore headphones and watched a movie, id be pretty upset and would make them quit doing that or drop them personally. I think it really takes alot out of win rate and truthfully just shows that you dont enjoy being there if youre trying to escape that much. Maybe find another way to make money, i very much doubt this player or players like him are at that $50 an hour mark, probably make less than vegas uber drives imo.

Also played at that same table with a guy who seemed like a bright young guy who knew tommy hyland and played golf with him. Both him and the bald guy headphones guy were 2-5 regs then, but id imagine the difference in trajectory of their gambling careers is massive. One knows a legend BJ player and was outgoing and cool and paying close attention to the action, one was buried in an ipad, not trying to maximize winrate and content with being a low stakes grinder.

Adding to the game is so much, every big game ive played in vegas, over 10-20 lets say, is very casual and social even if it has mostly pros or even in some cases all pros. Its a very dramatic difference from the typical bellagio 5-10 game for instance, which i havent been there to play in some time but assume its the same

the first type you describe is a parasite- all take and no give and in the long run costs himself a lot of money.

I had dinner with tommy hyland right before covid hit. some OMC i had played poker with occasionally is friends with him, mentioned he was in town and was surprised I knew who he is. Then he told me I could come to dinner with them if I wanted.

Amazing stories.

He talked about how good the tips were going to be in this job. He said some make as much as $200 a day on weekends. He didn't hit that so I'm guessing that's a big part of it

Thinkblue lasted like 2 weeks playing poker for a living.

Probably a good thing in the long run but man it's insane to me how little effort people put into their plans before going to vegas.

Wouldn't you want to save up a roll and a few months living expenses before making such a drastic life decision?

I guess everyone assumes they can make it playing poker without actually doing it for a sustained sample size.

No one is saying not to take a shot, but if you're going to take a shot then you might as well do it the right way.

You'll have way more regret after you fail knowing you didn't do everything you can to be successful.

Imagine caring about the actual pot sizes at which point the rake is $1 higher than now then thinking ya that would make for a great vlog to publish and then thinking what a great public service you are doing.

What is it with Rice and parking garages? Almost every video he's walking around filming himself in a parking garage, or discussing parking garages.

A lot of these Vloggers might exhibit greatness when making their content but the fact remains, they are only marginally good at keeping us entertained.

+1 Poker vlog fatigue is real, the good thing about diesel is that once he gets his numbers kink videos out of the way like this rake video, the crazy food prep and the rest of the hilarity comes back. He’s taking in so much nicotine from chain smoking those cheap cigars, that the good videos will be here soon.

Some things there are objectively right ways to do things.

Going to vegas with a mimimal roll and minimal savings is not the right way to do things.
