2024 MLB Season Thread

Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.

Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:

-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.

If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.

In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?

T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.

So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!

Lol Orioles. Burnes dealing. 9 Ks and 69 pitches through 5 innings and they put the bullpen in who all gives up 6 runs immediately. Lolol

It really amazes me that Coors is the best hitters park every single year, and yet the Rockies have never had a really consistent power hitter take full advantage of that.

Everyone is a power hitter at Coors Field. The Rockies have tried a Murderers Row lineup before and that got them nowhere. The Rockies problem is that they've never been able to assemble a pitching staff that can get guys out at Coors Field and consistently win on the road as well.

especially in the 9th inning

(personal sample size = 1)

the twins losing 2 of 3 to the s**tty a** marlins at home is not something I anticipated.

royals and tigers be like:

But they've never had a Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Albert Pujols, Barry Bonds, Frank Thomas, Aaron Judge, Mark McGwire, Gary Sheffield, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Carlos Delgado, etc

A truly top level slugger. If a guy like Pujols or Arod had played for the Rockies, some serious home run records would've fallen.

What they had was guys like Vinny Castilla, Andres Galaragga, Dante Bichette, Preston Wilson. Guys who were 2nd rate sluggers or less who looked like big sluggers briefly when they played at Coors. But these guys were far from elite sluggers. Even Walker and Helton weren't elite sluggers, they were just very good hitters.

Arenado even is just a .796 OPS guy for his road career. Carlos Delgado, a very legit slugger, had a .917 career road OPS. If Delgado even had been on Colorado for 10 years of his career, he might have 600+ home runs.

Apologies, I think I misinterpreted your initial post. I thought it was about the success-failure of the Rockies franchise as a whole by not acquiring a big HR hitter.

Ofc if they had been able to afford/obtain players like you mentioned, those guys absolutely would have broken HR records. But the Rockies know that everyone is a power hitter at Coors Field so the ownerships have not emphasized spending their $$$ on BIG name HR hitters (not that they would have been able to afford most them anyways). Maybe they should try at this point. What they've been doing since 1993 (with small spending) hasn't been working.

Duran also has 660 ABs, leading the league. 723 PA's for him this year, thats a lot. Ohtani leads the NL with 711.

Jimmy Rollins 778 in 2007 is the record.

Yeah I was being a bit facetious because I had to do a double take at 80+ XBHs with a pretty good average but not slugging .500. A quick check revealed the at bats issue. I guess it points up high dingers or high average needed to reach .500, a bunch of doubles won't do it.

I was kind of riffing on a stat from my childhood, when George Foster became the first player to hit 50 homers in quite some time. I was a boy and he hit .320 with 52 homers for my hometown Reds, yet his slugging % comparing it to historically great seasons seemingly hard to believe was well over 200 points lower than Ruth's biggest seasons, even with .320 and 52. And the answer of course was that Foster had him like 4/3 in at bats, thus the .800 to .600 slugging percentages.

Larry Walker had better road OPS during his MVP, but that could have been buffered by the easy home games. Don't write him or Helton off so easily.imo.

Walker and Helton were very good hitters like I said. But they were both a clear step down power wise from someone like a Carlos Delgado.

I mean, Coors has been the best hitters park for like 27 years in a row or something, and in that time I'm guessing there's been about 15 players to have a 50 home run season, and more than 25 total 50 homer seasons. They haven't had a 50 homer guy yet.

Did a quick count and starting from 1995 there have been 35 seasons of 50+ home runs. Prior to that year it had only been done 15 times.

If they ever got their hands on a premier slugger.... but they never have. Larry Walker was the closest but he was injury prone and only there for 1/2 of this career.

Todd Helton was the best hitter to be there for a full career. .855 road OPS vs 1.048 home

Walker had 597 games at Coors. 1.172 OPS there vs a career road OPS

Larry Walker is a HoFer.

They're saving him for the postseason which begins Tuesday.

Cole didn't have a limit because Yankees don't play until several days later.

Yankees still playing Judge every day for all of Aug and Sep. Can't wait for the the "unlucky" comments when the giant CFer hurts his wooky in the playoffs.

Rooting for the Marlins is freaking painful. I think Norby has money on the Twins.

by Carnivore k

McGriff was my first thought

He had 50+ for 4 different teams

and then 42 for another team

Arod had 150+ for 3 different teams that's probably a record.

Canseco cleared 40 for 5 different teams, but only 50 for 2 of those.

Kingman cleared 75 for 4 different teams

Beltre cleared 100 with 3 teams but only had 28 with Boston.

Beltran cleared 50 with 4 teams but only 37 with Houston

For a guy with only 331 career homers, JD Martinez has really spread them around too,

Roberto Alomar had 172 homers and had 50+ for 3 teams.

They hadn't won the AL East yet. Might as well not even let him pitch until then if the mentality is to give up. It was 1-0 when he was pulled.

The magic number was 1.

Baltimore would have had to go 4-0 while the Yankees went 0-4.

That's less than a 1% chance.

Sure. But then don't even pitch him then. If risking him isn't worth it at all he shouldn't even pitch.

I LOVE YOU Griffin Conine, son of Royals legend Jeff Conine!

Well they don't want him to be cold on 9 days rest either.

Pitchers have a routine. They can't have too little or too much rest.

Oh good, he belongs. I forgot that had happened or missed when it happened.

The Twins collapse is almost complete.

Ohtani is not setting the Dodger slugging % record for a season. Who holds that in the modern era (since 1960)?

At .643 now....
